But that figure is not revenue from animation alone: it includes games, merchandise and other parts of the franchise. Guinness separately estimated Pokémon’s broader media-franchise gross at $147 billion as of April 2024. Those totals answer different questions, so any all-time ranking needs to state its scope and date.
Which anime franchise has made the most money?
For an anime-specific record, the clearest answer is Pokémon. Guinness World Records says it earned $105 billion worldwide as of August 2021 in its highest-grossing anime franchise record. That record’s accounting is broad: it includes video and cell phone games, movies, TV anime, merchandise, “jet planes, and more.” It is not a measure of money earned by the animated series alone.
Guinness gives Pokémon a larger figure on a separate record page: an estimated $147 billion as of April 2024 for the best-selling media franchise. That is an all-media estimate, not a newer update to an anime-only total. The page estimates merchandise at $102.9 billion and also identifies video games, trading cards, movies, comics and home video among the contributors.
How the broad all-time rankings compare
A 2024 Nikkei Asia page reproduces a table attributed to Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), based on Visual Capitalist. It presents estimated all-time revenue through 2023 across media and character franchises. The note cautions that the figures are reference values drawn from franchise websites and may have changed; they are comparative estimates, not audited accounts.

| Rank | Franchise | Estimated all-time revenue |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pokémon | $147 billion |
| 2 | Hello Kitty | $89 billion |
| 3 | Winnie the Pooh | $76 billion |
| 4 | Mickey Mouse & Friends | $74 billion |
| 5 | Star Wars | $70 billion |
| 6 | Anpanman | $56 billion |
| 7 | Disney Princess | $46 billion |
| 8 | Shonen Jump/Jump Comics | $40 billion |
| 9 | Mario | $38 billion |
| 10 | Marvel Cinematic Universe | $35 billion |
| 11 | Harry Potter | $32 billion |
| 12 | Transformers | $30 billion |
| 13 | Spider-Man | $29 billion |
| 14 | Batman | $28 billion |
| 15 | Dragon Ball | $27 billion |
| 16 | Gundam | $24.7 billion |
These are media-franchise figures, not an anime-only leaderboard. Several entries are not anime-originated: Pokémon began as a video-game property; Hello Kitty is a character-led brand; Anpanman is rooted in books and characters; and Shonen Jump is a manga anthology and publishing brand. Calling the whole table a ranking of anime franchises would blur those distinctions. The table and its caveat appear in Nikkei Asia’s comparison.
Why published Pokémon totals do not match
Different dates and scopes produce different totals. A historical TitleMax ranking put Pokémon at $92.121 billion, Hello Kitty at $80.026 billion, Anpanman at $60.285 billion, Dragon Ball at $24.031 billion and Gundam at $26.457 billion. Japan’s Cabinet Office later reproduced a similar TitleMax-derived cumulative-income table through 2018, rounding those values to $92.1 billion, $80 billion, $60.3 billion and $24 billion for Pokémon, Hello Kitty, Anpanman and Dragon Ball, respectively.

Those older estimates should not be treated as current totals or directly reconciled with the later $147 billion figures. The available sources do not provide a standardized accounting method or an audited time series that explains every difference. When quoting a number, keep its source, date and scope attached to it. The historical references are TitleMax’s ranking and the Japan Cabinet Office’s 2020 annual report.
Annual company sales answer a different question
A lifetime franchise estimate is not comparable to one company’s sales during a fiscal year. Bandai Namco’s FY2025.3 factbook reports groupwide sales by IP for the fiscal year ending March 2025, in billions of yen and before intersegment eliminations:

Before comparing totals, check four things: whether the source counts anime alone or the wider franchise; the date or fiscal year covered; which revenue categories are included; and whether the number is an estimated cumulative total or a company’s reported annual sales. Without those distinctions, a table may look precise while comparing unlike measures.
