And Just Like That: Why Did They Kill Off Mr. Big?

Mr. Big was killed off to move And Just Like That beyond Carrie and Big’s settled marriage. Here is what the creators said, how the Peloton scene fits in, and why Chris Noth’s later allegations were not the reason.

Mr. Big was killed off because the revival needed a new story for Carrie. Michael Patrick King wanted And Just Like That… to explore sudden widowhood, grief, and Carrie’s identity outside her marriage—not simply continue the settled life she and Big had built. Big dies of a heart attack after a Peloton ride in the premiere, but the later Chris Noth allegations were not the reason for the character’s death.

Mr. Big was killed off because And Just Like That… needed to become a different story—not simply a continuation of Carrie Bradshaw and Big’s settled married life. Showrunner Michael Patrick King wanted the revival to place Carrie in a new, emotionally difficult chapter: sudden widowhood, grief, and the challenge of discovering who she was without her husband.

In the premiere episode, “Hello It’s Me,” Big finishes a Peloton ride, suffers a fatal heart attack, and dies before Carrie can meaningfully help him. The scene is designed to be shocking, but the larger reason for the death was structural: Big’s absence gives Carrie a new central conflict and moves the series beyond the original question of whether the two characters would finally make their relationship work.

Why did And Just Like That… need Mr. Big to die?

King’s explanation was primarily creative. He wanted to explore the idea that a great love can still be worth having even when it ends in devastating loss. That meant giving Carrie a story the original series had not really told: what happens when a woman in her mid-50s loses the partner around whom much of her adult life has been organized?

Keeping Big alive would have made it difficult to create that new premise. Carrie and Big had already moved through years of uncertainty, breakups, reconciliation, marriage, and domestic stability. A revival centered on their ordinary married life could have felt like a return to an already completed storyline. Big’s death instead forces Carrie to confront several questions at once:

  • Who is she when she is no longer part of a couple?
  • How does she process a loss that arrives without warning?
  • What does she owe the past, and what is she allowed to want in the future?
  • Can she build an identity that is not defined by her relationship with Big?

That is why the death is more than a twist at the end of the premiere. It supplies the revival’s emotional engine. Carrie’s grief, her attempts to understand the final hours of her marriage, and her gradual movement toward a self-directed life all grow out of that decision.

How does Mr. Big die?

Big dies of a heart attack after completing a workout on a Peloton Bike. Carrie is away when it happens. When she returns, she finds him in the shower, holds him, and remains with him as he dies.

The sequence establishes a fictional heart attack following exercise. It does not establish that the Peloton Bike caused his death. The product is a conspicuous plot device and became the most discussed object in the episode, but “Big dies after a Peloton ride” is the accurate description; “Peloton kills Big” is not.

Disclosure: The product mention below is for readers interested in the object featured in the scene, not medical advice or a claim that exercise equipment caused the fictional event.

If you are curious about the specific exercise equipment shown in the episode, you can look up the Peloton Bike and compare its current availability and model information. Product names, pricing, inventory, and retailer relationships can change.

Was Chris Noth’s return planned around Big’s death?

Yes. Chris Noth initially had reservations about returning to the franchise, but discussions with King focused on making Big’s exit meaningful. Noth has described wanting Carrie and Big to have a final silent moment together rather than having Big disappear or die without seeing her.

He ultimately accepted the role because he trusted King’s approach and understood that Big’s death served Carrie’s story. In other words, this was not primarily a case of the writers removing Noth after production was under way. His return was negotiated around a story that already involved Big’s death.

King’s own comments point in the same direction: the revival could not have been made in the form he envisioned without this major change. The most accurate behind-the-scenes summary is therefore a creative negotiation. Noth agreed to return, and the character’s final appearance was shaped to give Carrie—and the audience—a proper emotional goodbye.

Was Mr. Big killed off because of the Chris Noth allegations?

No. The allegations against Chris Noth were not the original reason for Big’s death.

The premiere of And Just Like That…, including Big’s death, aired on December 9, 2021. The sexual-assault allegations against Noth became public after the premiere. That chronology rules out the allegations as the reason the character was killed in the opening episode.

The allegations did affect later decisions. A Peloton advertisement featuring Noth was pulled, and reporting indicated that a planned Big appearance connected to the revival’s finale was removed. Those were subsequent marketing and editorial choices. They should not be confused with the earlier creative decision to make Big die in the premiere.

Had Big’s death already been planned for the third Sex and the City film?

Possibly. Reports about the never-produced third Sex and the City film said that its proposed story also involved Big dying suddenly of a heart attack and Carrie dealing with the aftermath.

That suggests the basic idea had been considered before And Just Like That…. It does not prove that the unmade film and the revival shared every plot detail, or that the television series simply transferred an entire film script to the screen. The careful conclusion is that Big’s death was not an entirely new concept, although the revival used it for a different production and a broader story about Carrie’s next stage of life.

Why did the Peloton scene become such a controversy?

The scene combines three elements that made it unusually memorable:

  1. Big dies immediately after exercising. That creates an apparent connection between the workout and the heart attack, even though the story does not establish the bike as the cause.
  2. The equipment is prominently identifiable. The Peloton Bike is not incidental background decoration; viewers can clearly recognize it.
  3. Peloton’s brand image was part of the conversation. The company’s products are associated with connected fitness, instruction, and lifestyle branding, so the fictional death created an obvious reputational problem.

The show’s use of the bike was also a reminder of the difference between fictional causation and real-world medical conclusions. A television plot can place a heart attack after a workout for dramatic effect. That sequence cannot determine whether a particular exercise product is safe or unsafe, and it should not be read as medical evidence.

What does Big’s death change for Carrie?

It changes the question at the center of Carrie’s life. In the original series, much of her romantic storyline revolved around whether Big would commit, whether their relationship could survive, and whether they could become a stable couple. By the time of And Just Like That…, that question has been answered: they are married and have built a life together.

Big’s death replaces the old romantic uncertainty with existential uncertainty. Carrie has to live with the fact that the relationship she spent years trying to understand has ended permanently. She must also decide whether moving forward means leaving Big behind, or finding a way to carry the marriage into a new life.

This is why the death re-centers the show on Carrie. Big is no longer the unresolved romantic destination of her story. He becomes part of her history, her grief, and the memories she must interpret as she begins imagining a future that does not revolve around him.

Was the decision successful?

Whether the choice worked emotionally is subjective, but its purpose is clear. Big’s death gave the revival an immediate difference from the original series and the films. It also created a sustained character arc rather than a one-episode surprise.

The decision was controversial because viewers had invested in Carrie and Big’s eventual happiness. Killing him after they had finally reached a settled marriage can feel like undoing the resolution of the earlier story. From the writers’ perspective, however, that disruption was the point: a revival about Carrie at 55 required a premise that could not simply restore the old romantic equilibrium.

The revival ultimately concluded after its third season in 2025. That later ending does not change the original rationale for Big’s death. The premiere was built around the idea that Carrie’s next story would begin with loss.

What is the connection to Candace Bushnell’s book?

Sex and the City, Candace Bushnell’s 1996 book, is the source material associated with the franchise’s origins. It is useful for readers who want to explore the world that inspired the television series, but it is not a direct explanation of why the television version of Mr. Big dies in And Just Like That….

The television franchise developed its own characters, relationships, and continuity. Bushnell’s book is best treated as a look at the original source material rather than as a behind-the-scenes account of Big’s death.

The short answer

Mr. Big was killed off because Michael Patrick King wanted And Just Like That… to tell a new story about Carrie, not resume the settled domestic life she and Big had achieved. His sudden death creates the revival’s central drama: Carrie must deal with widowhood, grief, and the question of who she is on her own.

Chris Noth’s allegations did not cause the death; they became public after the premiere and affected later promotional and editorial decisions. Big’s fictional heart attack happens after a Peloton ride, but the show does not establish that the bike caused it. The concept may also have been considered for an abandoned third film, but the revival gave it a new purpose as the starting point for Carrie’s next chapter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Mr. Big die in And Just Like That?

Mr. Big dies from a heart attack after completing a Peloton workout in the premiere episode, “Hello It’s Me.” The show does not say that the Peloton Bike caused the heart attack.

Was Mr. Big killed off because of the Chris Noth allegations?

No. The premiere aired on December 9, 2021, before the allegations against Chris Noth became public. The allegations later affected promotional and editorial decisions, including a Peloton advertisement and a reported planned appearance by Big.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did the writers decide Mr. Big had to die?

King wanted the revival to explore Carrie as a widow at 55 and to create a new story about grief, identity, and life after a major relationship. Continuing Big and Carrie’s settled marriage would not have created the same dramatic premise.

Was Mr. Big’s death planned for the third Sex and the City movie?

Reports about the unmade third film said its proposed story also involved Big dying suddenly of a heart attack. That shows the idea had been considered earlier, but it does not prove that the film and the revival had identical stories.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Big died to give And Just Like That… a new dramatic premise: Carrie had to confront sudden widowhood and build a life beyond her marriage. The death was planned as part of Chris Noth’s return, had possible roots in an earlier unmade film idea, and was not caused by the later allegations against Noth.
