Ancient Cannibalism Through Time: Eight Cultures and What the Evidence Shows

Yes, people in several societies consumed human flesh, but “cannibalism” describes different behaviors rather than one universal custom. Archaeologists distinguish survival consumption, violence, ritual acts and mortuary endocannibalism by combining bone damage, site context, historical testimony and, in one modern case, disease epidemiology.

The strongest cases show several processing marks together—cutting, peeling, percussion breakage, burning or cooking, toothmarks and deliberate skeletal selection. Colonial reports, especially those concerning the Aztec/Mexica, require a different and more cautious standard than directly observed bone modification.

How to read the evidence

A cut mark on a human bone is not, by itself, proof that someone ate the person. Similar marks can result from dismemberment, defleshing for burial or later disturbance. A 2024 review recommends evaluating eight taphonomic traits together with the location of marks, breakage patterns, burning, skeletal representation and the surrounding deposits. The question is whether human remains were processed like food animals and whether the site context supports consumption.

The confidence labels in this article refer to the evidence for a particular episode, not to every person in a named population:

1. Homo antecessor at Gran Dolina, Spain: about 780,000 years ago

What was found

At least six individuals were mixed with animal bones and stone tools in the Gran Dolina deposits at Atapuerca. Human bones carry cutmarks, peeling, percussion damage and chopmarks comparable to the traces left when carcasses are butchered. The assemblage lacks an arrangement suggesting a formal ritual display.

What it means

Fernández-Jalvo and colleagues concluded in 1999 that the remains “suggest that it is solely the result of consumptive activities as there is no evidence of ritual or other intention.” That wording supports consumption, not a specific explanation for why it happened. A later analysis of the approximately 0.9-million-year-old TD6.2 assemblage describes it as “the oldest known case of cannibalism to date” and notes that hominins are overrepresented as prey. The two dates reflect different analyses and layers discussed for Gran Dolina; neither identifies a motive such as famine, warfare or ceremony.

Confidence: Strong archaeological support for consumption; motive open.

2. Neanderthals at Krapina Cave, Croatia: Pleistocene

The bone evidence

More than 800 Neanderthal bones from Krapina include cut marks and hammerstone fragments. Such damage is consistent with deliberate processing, and the site has long appeared in discussions of Neanderthal cannibalism.

Why the conclusion is limited

The evidence does not show that all Neanderthals, or even every individual at Krapina, practiced cannibalism. Defleshing for other purposes, post-depositional damage and incomplete recovery must be considered. The Australian Museum presents Krapina as evidence discussed in the literature rather than proof of a universal Neanderthal custom.

Confidence: Supported but limited to an interpreted episode at one Pleistocene site.

3. Ancestral Puebloans at Chaco Canyon: prehistoric North American Southwest

Small House charnel pit

A study of the Small House charnel pit identifies six categories of perimortem damage that researchers regard as a taphonomic signature of prehistoric cannibalism. “Perimortem” means the bone was damaged while still fresh or near the time of death, when it could fracture and mark in ways unlike dry, ancient bone.

Interpretive boundaries

The older label “Anasazi” appears in earlier literature, but Ancestral Puebloans is the preferred modern archaeological term. The Chaco finding concerns a particular deposit; it cannot be generalized to every Pueblo community. Scholars continue to debate whether the damage records consumption, extreme violence, mortuary treatment or a combination of behaviors. The site context is therefore as important as the marks themselves.

Confidence: Supported but debated for the Small House episode; no basis for labeling all Ancestral Puebloans cannibals.

4. Aztec/Mexica communities in central Mexico: pre-Conquest and early colonial records

What the documents claim

Early colonial writers reported sacrificial cannibalism among Aztec, or Mexica, communities. A study of 1577–1586 Relaciones Geográficas records allegations in 40 of 105 reports. Only 18 of those 40 allegations were attributed directly to Indigenous informants, showing how often the claim was transmitted through uncertain channels.

Food supply, ritual and political context

Bernard Ortiz de Montellano argued that reported episodes coincided with harvests. Tribute networks and intensive chinampa agriculture could supply substantial food, making protein shortage a weak explanation for a city with those resources. On that reading, communion with gods and sacrificial ritual offer a better account of why consumption might be reported. This remains an interpretation of historical evidence, not a measurement of how widespread the practice was.

The missing osteological confirmation

A recent review notes that osteological evidence of cannibalism has not been identified on human remains associated with Aztec sacrifices. That absence does not prove the accounts false, but it prevents the documents from being treated as independently confirmed at every site. Claims must be assessed for who made them, when, for what audience and under what colonial political pressures.

5. Navatu, Fiji: deposits dated 50 BC–AD 1900

Processing traces in a midden

Human and animal bones in the Navatu midden show matching patterns of ancient breakage, burning, crushing, cutmarks, peeling and percussion pits. William DeGusta reported ancient breaks on 92% of human specimens, burning on 29% and cutmarks on 9%. The combination resembles carcass processing rather than an isolated act of defleshing.

Burials provide a control

Formal burials at the same site are largely unmodified. That contrast helps separate the midden’s butchery pattern from ordinary mortuary handling and is one reason the osteological study supports cannibalism.

Confidence: Strong archaeological support for consumption in the midden deposits; the evidence does not make every Fijian community or period equivalent.

6. Fore and neighboring groups in Papua New Guinea: twentieth-century mortuary feasts

Endocannibalism and kuru

Among Fore and neighboring groups, endocannibalism meant consuming deceased relatives during mortuary feasts. Medical investigations linked the practice to kuru, a fatal prion disease. The kuru epidemic peaked in the late 1950s and declined after mortuary consumption stopped. As one study states, kuru “was transmitted during the transumption (endocannibalism) of dead family members at mortuary feasts.”

Why this case is different

This is not an archaeological claim about an ancient empire. It is a documented twentieth-century mortuary practice supported by observed customs, clinical patterns and the epidemiological change that followed cessation. The practice ended; describing it does not justify treating Fore people today as inherently cannibalistic.

7. Early Bronze Age people at El Mirador Cave, Iberia: 4600–4100 calibrated years BP

Six individuals and food-processing damage

Six Early Bronze Age individuals at El Mirador show cutmarks, human toothmarks, cooking damage and deliberate breakage. Together, these traces support gastronomic cannibalism more strongly than any single mark could.

Local and exceptional, not a famine routine

The 2025 analysis describes the episode as local and exceptional. It finds no signal that a broad famine forced repeated consumption and suggests intergroup violence as a possible setting. The people whose remains were consumed appear to have local origins, so the episode need not be explained as the aftermath of a distant raid or migration.

Confidence: Strong archaeological support for an isolated consumptive episode; conflict is possible, not demonstrated.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

8. Neolithic people at El Mirador Cave, Iberia: 5709–5573 calibrated years BP

A separate event in the same cave

El Mirador also preserves an earlier Neolithic episode dated 5709–5573 calibrated years BP. Bayesian analysis separates it from the Early Bronze Age remains. Treating all the cave’s human bones as one event would therefore combine people who lived thousands of years apart.

What can and cannot be inferred

The analysis reports local origins for the cannibalized individuals and no famine signal. It confirms that consumption occurred in this earlier episode but does not establish a single motive. The two El Mirador events are a practical warning: one site can preserve multiple episodes with different dates, participants and causes.

Confidence: Supported archaeological episode; motive unresolved and independent from the later Bronze Age event.

Was cannibalism caused by famine, religion or violence?

There is no single answer. Gran Dolina and Navatu show food-like processing but do not identify a motive. The El Mirador episodes lack a famine signal; the Bronze Age analysis raises intergroup violence as a possibility. The Fore case was mortuary and relational, not a response to hunger. Aztec accounts are framed in sacrificial and religious terms, yet their historical reliability and scale are disputed. Chaco Canyon and Krapina remain interpretations of incomplete archaeological records.

Researchers therefore separate what happened to the bones from why people did it. Taphonomy can establish processing and, sometimes, consumption. It rarely identifies a belief system by itself. Motive requires independent context such as burial treatment, settlement history, food availability, warfare indicators, written testimony or epidemiological evidence.

How archaeologists decide that consumption occurred

  1. Document the marks: map cutmarks, peeling, percussion pits, chopmarks, toothmarks, burning and cooking alteration.
  2. Check fracture mechanics: fresh bone breaks and marrow access patterns differ from dry-bone damage and many forms of accidental breakage.
  3. Compare species: matching treatment of human and animal remains strengthens a carcass-processing interpretation.
  4. Assess skeletal selection: which body parts are present, missing or overrepresented can indicate transport, dismemberment and consumption choices.
  5. Reconstruct the deposit: midden refuse, charnel pits, hearths, burials and later disturbance carry different implications.
  6. Test competing explanations: ritual defleshing, secondary burial, warfare, scavenging and excavation damage must be considered before naming cannibalism.
  7. Separate episodes: radiocarbon dates and stratigraphy can reveal repeated events at one site, as at El Mirador.
  8. State confidence narrowly: conclude that an episode supports consumption rather than claiming an entire culture practiced cannibalism.

What these eight cases show

The oldest evidence in this set comes from Gran Dolina, roughly 780,000 years ago, with a later TD6.2 analysis reaching approximately 0.9 million years. The cases then extend through the Pleistocene, prehistoric Iberia and the American Southwest, early colonial Mexico, Fiji deposits spanning 50 BC to AD 1900 and a twentieth-century epidemic in Papua New Guinea.

They also demonstrate why the headline “ancient cultures that practiced cannibalism” needs qualification. Some records concern one exceptional event, some a debated interpretation and one a historically documented mortuary custom that ended. The most defensible conclusion is not that whole peoples were defined by cannibalism, but that human consumption occurred in varied circumstances—and that the confidence of each claim depends on the kind of evidence available.
