That is Romero’s recollection—not a court finding or direct confirmation from Mangione—and the reporting does not establish how often Mangione played. Among Us is a multiplayer social-deduction game in which players try to identify a secretly assigned killer among them.
What did the reporting say about Mangione and Among Us?
In a December 10, 2024 report, NBC News quoted Alejandro Romero, a former University of Pennsylvania peer and member of the same Discord group, recalling that the group played Among Us. Romero said he had not spoken to or seen Mangione since 2020. The account does not specify how often Mangione personally played, exactly when he did, or whether he played outside that group. Romero described his reaction to the coincidence this way: “I just found it extremely ironic that, you know, we were in this game and there could actually be a true killer among us.” That was Romero’s personal response to the game’s premise, not evidence that the game influenced Mangione or his conduct.

In a typical match, some players are secretly assigned the Impostor role, while the others play as Crewmates. Crewmates complete tasks and try to work out who the Impostor is; players discuss suspicions and vote on who to eject. The game’s “killer among us” idea is fictional gameplay, not a depiction or explanation of real-world violence.
Is there evidence the game was connected to Mangione’s crime?
The reporting cited here establishes no causal or motivational link between playing Among Us and Mangione’s real-world conduct. A former peer’s recollection that a group played a game cannot establish that the game affected a player’s actions. The coincidence in Romero’s remark should not be treated as a warning sign, motive, or explanation.

What is the latest federal case status?
As of October 4, 2026, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York reported that Mangione pleaded guilty on August 14, 2026, to one count of interstate stalking resulting in death and one count of cyberstalking through interstate facilities resulting in death. The office said sentencing was scheduled for December 18, 2026. Because both the case status and scheduled date can change, this is a dated snapshot. U.S. Attorney’s Office release
