The 2025 Anaconda has a clever hook: childhood friends head into the Amazon to remake the 1997 movie they love, only for a real giant snake to turn their film shoot into a fight for survival. Jack Black and Paul Rudd bring plenty of comic energy, but the new film’s jokes and sincere friendship drama do not always fit together as neatly as its premise promises. If the original’s campy snake-movie excess is your benchmark, this meta comedy is an uneven successor—not a straightforward return to the same kind of fun.
What is the 2025 Anaconda about?
Doug (Jack Black) and Griff (Paul Rudd), childhood friends who have long dreamed of remaking their favorite movie, travel to the Amazon to make their version of Anaconda. Their chaotic production becomes genuinely dangerous when a giant anaconda appears. Sony calls the film an “entirely original comedy” and labels it “THIS IS NOT A REBOOT.” That is the studio’s framing; in the story, the characters are explicitly trying to remake the 1997 film. Sony Pictures’ synopsis and credits list Tom Gormican as director and co-writer with Kevin Etten, alongside Black, Rudd, Steve Zahn, Thandiwe Newton, Daniela Melchior and Selton Mello.

How does it compare with the 1997 original?
The two films approach the same snake-and-Amazon setup from different angles. Sony presented the 1997 Anaconda as an “action-packed thriller”: a documentary crew working in the Amazon takes on a guide who turns out to be a poacher hunting a legendary giant snake. The new film instead makes the act of producing a remake its comic engine, before bringing real creature peril onto the set. Sony’s original-film synopsis makes that genre shift clear.
| Film | Central setup | What drives the experience |
|---|---|---|
| Anaconda (1997) | An Amazon documentary crew encounters a guide pursuing a legendary snake. | Snake-centered action-thriller peril, as described by Sony. |
| Anaconda (2025) | Friends shoot their own version of the 1997 movie; a real anaconda threatens the production. | Meta comedy, friendship and filmmaking chaos mixed with creature danger. |
That distinction matters if you are hoping for the original’s brand of camp. The 2025 film is not simply another thriller with knowingly silly moments; it spends much of its time on the friends’ filmmaking scheme and their relationship. The A.V. Club’s Matt Schimkowitz finds an energetic, deliberately dim comedy in that remake-culture premise, pointing to the 1997 film’s outrageous snake set pieces as part of its appeal. That is one critic’s reading, but it captures the kind of unabashed absurdity the new movie is inviting viewers to remember.

Do the comedy and character drama work?
Black and Rudd are best suited to the film’s broad, self-aware side. The fun comes when their characters’ enthusiasm and escalating production mishaps are allowed to be silly. The more difficult fit is the earnest material about friendship and career hopes: it gives the story emotional stakes, but can interrupt the comic rhythm rather than deepen it.
That tension is central to the divided critical response. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus argues that the premise could support a raucous action-comedy but that the film struggles to contain its conflicting tones. Jesse Hassenger’s Guardian review is particularly critical of the opening horror sequence and the shift toward earnest, pathos-heavy setup, while finding the leads’ silliness more effective. Schimkowitz’s A.V. Club review is more receptive to the film’s intentionally goofy energy. The disagreement is less about whether the movie has a comic idea than about how well its different moods share the screen.

Is the new Anaconda as fun as the campy original?
Not consistently. The meta premise gives the 2025 film a fresh way into the material, and Black and Rudd can make its broad comedy entertaining. But the film’s sincere detours keep it from sustaining the kind of unruly, creature-feature fun that fans may associate with the 1997 original. If you want a comedy about friends trying to make a movie, the hook may be enough; if you mainly want campy snake peril, the older thriller is closer to that promise.

Availability depends on territory and can change. Netflix Tudum announced the film’s Netflix streaming arrival on March 25, 2026, and Rotten Tomatoes currently lists Netflix subscription streaming alongside Fandango rental or purchase options; those listings should not be treated as universal availability. Netflix Tudum’s announcement confirms the streaming date. Sony’s UK page says the film released there on February 10, 2026, and lists digital purchase and rental services for that market: Sony Pictures UK.

A 4K Blu-ray is another home-viewing option to check. T3’s April 14, 2026 home-cinema article discusses the 2025 film on disc, but retailer stock, exact edition and region compatibility should be confirmed before buying. Be careful to select the 2025 release: the 1997 film also has separate Blu-ray and 4K editions. T3’s disc listing covers the newer film, while Blu-ray.com’s listing is for the older title.
