Eligible free, ad-supported movies, shows and streaming channels remain available within Prime Video, including to viewers who do not pay for Prime. The change followed Prime Video’s introduction of ads, but Amazon said its stated aim was to simplify the viewing experience—not that the ad launch alone caused Freevee’s retirement.
What Amazon shut down—and what it kept
Freevee stopped being a separate service: its name and standalone app were retired. The free, ad-supported offering did not disappear altogether. Amazon moved a broad selection of that programming into Prime Video, where non-Prime customers can watch eligible titles and channels with ads.
That does not mean every Freevee title moved over or remains available. Prime Video also brings together Prime-included titles, free ad-supported programming, rentals and purchases, add-on subscriptions, and live programming. Those are different access categories, and a title’s availability can vary by location and change over time. Prime Video’s terms describe its different content and offer types.
How Freevee became part of Prime Video

Do you need Prime to watch free content?
No. A Prime membership is not required for every title on Prime Video. Non-Prime viewers can watch eligible free, ad-supported titles without paying for Prime; the free selection is separate from the larger catalog included with membership.

Check the access label on each title rather than assuming that everything shown in the app is free or included. This is a general guide; availability, advertising and payment rules can differ by title and market.

Where Freevee movies, shows and channels went
Amazon said non-Prime customers would continue to have access to a large selection of free programming in Prime Video, including selected Amazon MGM Studios originals, licensed movies and series, and FAST channels. It did not promise that the entire former Freevee catalog would remain. A particular show might be missing because of licensing, regional availability or a change to the catalog.

FAST means “free ad-supported streaming television”: scheduled channels that stream continuously, more like traditional TV. AVOD, or ad-supported video on demand, refers to programs viewers choose to watch when they want. Freevee offered both types; not every Freevee movie or series was a FAST channel.
Former Freevee originals were not automatically erased when the brand ended, but their presence in Prime Video is not guaranteed indefinitely. During the 2024 announcement, Ars Technica reported that producers could no longer pitch projects specifically as Freevee originals and that some pending deals were canceled. That was trade reporting about development activity, not a claim that every Freevee production or pending project was affected.

Why did Amazon retire the Freevee brand?
Amazon’s stated explanation was to simplify the viewing experience by bringing its free programming into Prime Video while keeping free content available. The timing came after Prime Video began showing ads on its main movie-and-show offering, but Amazon did not say that this ad launch alone caused Freevee’s retirement.
A likely business rationale is that one destination can bring free programming, Prime titles, rentals, add-on subscriptions and live content together, while reducing the need to maintain separate brands and discovery experiences. Consolidation also gives Amazon one larger environment for advertising. In May 2025, Amazon Ads said Prime Video had an average monthly ad-supported reach of more than 130 million U.S. customers; that figure is Amazon’s own claim, not an independently audited measurement. Amazon Ads’ announcement also promoted its Prime Video ad formats.

What Prime Video ads mean for former Freevee viewers
Three things can now coexist in the same app: ads on movies and shows included with Prime, free programming that is ad-supported and does not require Prime, and paid options such as rentals or add-on subscriptions. They are not the same product, even though they share a destination.
Amazon’s ad-free option was renamed Prime Video Ultra in the United States in March 2026. Amazon announced a U.S. price of $4.99 per month on March 13, 2026, for that add-on. It is intended to remove ads from most Prime Video movies and shows, not to turn the former Freevee catalog into an ad-free service. Amazon says some free ad-supported programming, live content and sports may still carry ads for customers using the ad-free option. How to find free programming in Prime Video
- Open the Prime Video app or website; the former Freevee app is no longer the destination.
- Sign in with the Amazon account you used for Freevee.
- Search for the movie, series or channel you want.
- Check the title’s access label. Look for wording such as “free with ads” or “watch with ads,” and distinguish it from “included with Prime,” rental, purchase or an add-on subscription.
- If a title is unavailable, check whether it is offered in your country or search again later. A missing title does not mean that all Freevee programming was removed.
If you want fewer ads on Prime-included movies and shows, review the current Prime Video Ultra terms before subscribing. It does not necessarily remove ads from free ad-supported programming, live TV or sports. Viewers who mainly want no-subscription, ad-supported viewing can also compare services such as Tubi, Pluto TV and The Roku Channel; their catalogs and availability differ.
