Netflix is the better pick for a household choosing a dedicated streaming service; Amazon Prime is usually better value if you already use its shipping and other membership benefits. For documentary viewers, the deciding factor is less a raw title count than which service currently has the films and series you want: catalogs change by country and over time. This comparison covers the United States, using Amazon’s published prices and plan details available on August 18, 2026. Check Netflix’s U.S. signup page for the price and plans offered to your account, since its official plan information varies by country and billing method.
What are you comparing: Netflix, Prime Video, or Amazon Prime?
Netflix is a dedicated streaming subscription. Prime Video is Amazon’s video service, included with a paid Amazon Prime membership; Amazon also offers Prime Video Ultra as an add-on in the United States. Prime itself includes benefits beyond video, so comparing its full membership price with Netflix’s streaming price is fair only if you count the non-video benefits you actually use.
Amazon’s U.S. Prime membership was listed at $14.99 monthly or $139 annually. Prime Video Ultra was listed at an additional $4.99 monthly, or $45.99 annually for eligible annual Prime members. Ultra requires Prime or a Prime Video subscription and was described as U.S.-only. Amazon’s plan announcement has the current feature and eligibility details. Netflix’s U.S. prices are not established by its international plan-help page; check the U.S. signup flow before subscribing.
How do the plans compare?
The table reflects U.S. Amazon details published by August 18, 2026, and Netflix plan capabilities listed in its help documentation. Netflix plan availability can vary by country, billing partner, and account eligibility; the documentation does not establish U.S. prices.

| Option | Price | Ads | Picture and sound | Concurrent streams | Downloads |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Prime membership, including Prime Video | $14.99/month or $139/year. Annual membership averages about $11.58/month before tax. | Ads in included Prime Video content | HD, HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision; no 4K/UHD in the included tier, per Amazon’s current U.S. description | Up to 4 | Up to 50 |
| Prime plus Prime Video Ultra | $4.99/month extra, or $45.99/year for eligible annual Prime members. Prime plus monthly Ultra is $19.98/month; Prime plus annual Ultra averages about $15.42/month when both annual prices are spread across 12 months. | Ad-free for eligible content; exceptions apply | Adds 4K/UHD and Dolby Atmos | Up to 5 | Up to 100 |
| Netflix Standard | U.S. price not stated in the cited plan documentation; check the signup flow | Ad-free, according to Netflix’s plan documentation | 1080p Full HD | 2 | 2 devices |
| Netflix Premium | U.S. price not stated in the cited plan documentation; check the signup flow | Ad-free, according to Netflix’s plan documentation | 4K Ultra HD, HDR, and Netflix Spatial Audio | 4 | 6 devices |
Netflix also documents Mobile and Basic plans in some markets: Mobile is ad-free at 480p and supports one phone or tablet and one download device; Basic is ad-free at 720p with one device and one download device. Their availability is not universal, so do not assume either is offered to a U.S. account. See Netflix’s plan comparison for the feature qualifications.
Which is cheaper for a streaming household?
If you already pay for Prime
Prime Video has no additional subscription charge for an existing Prime member, though the membership is not free. If you are content with its included catalog and ads, the incremental video cost is zero. Adding Ultra costs extra; whether it is worthwhile depends on how much you value eligible ad-free viewing, 4K/UHD, Dolby Atmos, and the larger stream and download limits.
If you would subscribe to Prime only for video
Do not count Amazon’s shipping, reading, or other membership benefits as savings unless you would use them. Compare the $14.99 monthly Prime price—or $139 annual price—against the Netflix plan offered to you, and consider whether you want ads and whether you need Ultra’s features. A standalone Prime Video subscription may be available in some markets, but its current U.S. price and terms are not established here.

If you want annual billing
Annual Prime averages about $11.58 per month before tax, but requires paying $139 upfront. Adding annual Ultra at the stated eligible-member price brings the combined annual outlay to $184.99, or about $15.42 per month averaged over a year. Netflix’s comparable U.S. annual cost is not stated in the cited plan page; confirm the displayed billing terms before comparing totals.

Netflix’s documented plans are described as ad-free. Amazon’s included Prime Video tier carries ads in included content. Ultra removes ads from eligible programming, but Amazon says advertising may remain in live events, selected ad-supported programming, and third-party subscriptions. In particular, paying for Ultra does not guarantee ad-free sports.
4K, HDR, and audio: the plan is only one part of playback
Netflix Premium includes 4K Ultra HD and HDR, as well as Netflix Spatial Audio. Amazon’s included Prime Video tier lists HD, HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision; its U.S. Ultra add-on is required for 4K/UHD and Dolby Atmos. Those are plan capabilities, not promises that every title will play in those formats. Title availability, device and app support, internet bandwidth, display, and audio equipment can limit the result. Amazon outlines these restrictions in its Ultra announcement.

Documentaries and other content: choose by titles you will watch
Neither a service’s general reputation nor a raw catalog count proves that it has the better documentary selection for you. Rights and availability change, and a title visible in Amazon’s app may require a rental, purchase, or separate channel subscription rather than being included with Prime. Netflix presents a focused subscription catalog; Prime Video combines included programming with transactional and add-on options.
What each service brings
- Netflix: Its programming spans documentaries alongside series, films, reality, stand-up, animation, and international productions. The consistent subscription model is useful if you want to browse one included catalog, but confirm that a particular documentary is currently available in the United States.
- Prime Video: Amazon describes a mix of original series and films, licensed programming, and sports. Its app also includes routes to rentals, purchases, and Prime Video Channels; those offers should not be mistaken for titles included in membership. See Amazon’s Prime Video overview.
For a decision based on documentaries, make a short watchlist of specific films or series, then check each service’s U.S. listing before subscribing. Also check whether a title is included, leaving soon, or available only through an extra payment. That is more useful than assuming one service has “more documentaries” based on an unqualified count.

Amazon lists selected NFL, NBA, WNBA, NASCAR, NWSL, and The Masters programming among its sports offerings. Rights, seasons, markets, blackouts, and package requirements can change, and not every event shown in the Prime Video app is included with Prime. Some events may require another subscription or purchase. Live sports may also carry ads even with Ultra. Prime Video is therefore a meaningful option for fans of its carried events, not a replacement for every local broadcast, league package, or sports subscription.

Streams, downloads, and household sharing
Device limits
Netflix Standard supports two simultaneous devices and downloads on two devices; Premium supports four simultaneous devices and downloads on six. Amazon lists up to four concurrent streams and 50 downloads with the included Prime Video benefit, rising to five streams and 100 downloads with Ultra. These are service limits, not a guarantee that every title can be watched simultaneously on every device: title- and provider-specific restrictions can apply. Netflix’s device count also does not mean that four people in separate homes may share an account.
Household rules
Netflix says an account is for people who live together in one household. People outside that household generally need their own account or an eligible extra-member arrangement. Extra-member availability depends on country and billing method, and Netflix says extra members cannot be added to ad-supported plans. Review Netflix’s household and extra-member rules for the account-specific conditions.
Amazon Household can share selected Prime benefits among eligible household members, but video entitlements do not all behave alike. Included Prime Video titles, rentals and purchases, Channels, and add-on subscriptions may have different access and account-permission rules. Check the terms for the specific content or subscription rather than assuming that a shared profile or a stream allowance grants access to everything.

Which service is easier to navigate?
Netflix is the more straightforward proposition when you want to open an app and browse a subscription catalog. Prime Video’s breadth is useful if you want rentals, purchases, channels, and live events in one ecosystem, but the mix can make it harder to tell what is included in the membership versus separately paid. Before selecting a title on Amazon, look for its included-with-Prime status and any rental, purchase, or channel charge. Amazon lists supported device categories in its Prime Video overview.
Who should choose Netflix?
- Choose Netflix if you want a dedicated, ad-free streaming subscription and prefer a single-purpose catalog.
- It is the stronger default for viewers prioritizing Netflix’s ongoing original programming mix, including documentary, international, and serialized content, provided the shows you want are currently available in your region.
- Premium is the Netflix tier to consider if you need 4K/HDR, up to four simultaneous devices, and downloads on six devices; verify its U.S. price in the signup flow.
- Choose another arrangement or account if regular viewers live outside your household; Netflix’s extra-member terms vary.
Who should choose Amazon Prime?
- Choose Prime if you already value Amazon shipping or other Prime membership benefits; Prime Video is then part of a broader package rather than the sole reason for the bill.
- It is the better fit if the selected live sports it carries matter to you and you accept that event availability and advertising vary.
- Choose the included video tier if HD and its included catalog are sufficient and you can tolerate ads. Consider Ultra only if its eligible ad-free catalog, 4K/UHD, Dolby Atmos, or higher limits justify the add-on cost.
- Prime Video suits viewers who want the option to rent, buy, or add channels within Amazon’s video ecosystem, as long as they distinguish those charges from included content.
Should you subscribe to both?
Keep both only when each earns its place: for example, one supplies documentaries or series the household regularly watches while the other provides Prime benefits or specific sports. If one service is used for only an occasional release, rotating subscriptions can reduce the ongoing bill: note the release or event you want, subscribe for the period you will watch it, then cancel according to the service’s current billing terms. Check annual renewal dates before switching, since an annual membership commits more money upfront than a monthly plan.
Verdict: Netflix for streaming first, Prime for the broader bundle
For a household paying primarily for entertainment, Netflix is the stronger standalone choice. For an Amazon household already using Prime benefits—or a fan of Prime Video’s selected sports—Amazon can offer better overall value. If you are deciding specifically for documentaries, compare the current U.S. availability and included status of the titles you actually want rather than relying on a universal catalog winner.
