Non-Prime viewers can watch eligible titles by signing in with an Amazon account and choosing programs explicitly labeled free or “Watch with ads”; every other Prime Video title may require a subscription, rental, purchase, or channel.
The change separates Freevee’s retired identity from the free catalog that Amazon carried into Prime Video. The catalog is not permanent, and availability depends on licensing, geography, device compatibility, and the access label shown on each title.
Key takeaways
- Amazon retired the standalone Freevee identity and app, but selected free, ad-supported programming remains available through Prime Video.
- Non-Prime viewers can watch a title without buying Prime when the Prime Video title page explicitly labels that title free or ad-supported.
- Free programming remains ad-supported, and Prime Video’s ad-free option does not necessarily remove ads from free ad-supported programs, live television, or sports.
- Amazon’s announced Freevee shutdown window was August 2025, while a later chronology reports that the apps were decommissioned on September 3, 2025.
- Tubi, Pluto TV, and Plex are legal free alternatives, but each has changing catalogs, advertising, and geographic restrictions.
Is Freevee gone?
Freevee’s standalone app and brand are gone, but Freevee’s free viewing model did not disappear. Amazon announced in November 2024 that it would phase out the Freevee name and bring selected free programming into Prime Video. The remaining offering can include Amazon MGM Studios originals, licensed movies and series, and free ad-supported television, or FAST, channels.
Amazon described the change as a simplification of its viewing experience. In a statement reported by the Los Angeles Times on November 13, 2024, an Amazon spokesperson said: “To deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out Freevee branding.”

The timing has two useful reference points rather than one simple date. Amazon’s in-app notice and reporting at the time pointed to August 2025 as the shutdown window, while a later chronology reports September 3, 2025 as the operational decommissioning date. TechCrunch reported the August 2025 app shutdown notice, and the later Freevee chronology records the September 3 endpoint.
How can you watch Freevee shows for free on Prime Video?
You cannot open a current Freevee app, but you can still watch Prime Video titles that Amazon designates as free or ad-supported. You generally need an Amazon account and a compatible device, but you do not need an Amazon Prime membership for a title explicitly marked free.
- Open the Prime Video website or Prime Video app.
- Sign in with an Amazon account.
- Search for the movie or show you want to watch.
- Open the title’s detail page and look for wording such as Watch for Free, Watch with ads, or an equivalent free/ad-supported label.
- Start playback only if the title page clearly identifies the title as free.
The title page is the important decision point. Prime Video contains several access types in the same interface, so seeing a program in search results does not prove that the program is free.
| Prime Video access type | What it means | Do you need Prime? |
|---|---|---|
| Free or free with ads | The designated title can be streamed without a Prime subscription, with advertising. | Not necessarily; an Amazon account and compatible device are generally still required. |
| Included with Prime | The title is part of the Prime or Prime Video subscription catalog. | Yes, or another specifically stated subscription. |
| Rental or purchase | You pay separately for temporary access or ownership of the digital title. | Prime is not necessarily required, but payment is. |
| Third-party channel | The title belongs to an additional subscription channel available through Prime Video. | That channel’s subscription is required. |
| Live television or sports | Access and advertising follow the rules for the particular live service or event. | Requirements vary by program and location. |
Amazon’s Prime Video terms describe free or ad-supported video as content available for online streaming when Amazon designates the title as free. The same rules and Amazon’s device documentation indicate that availability, supported devices, downloads, and labels can vary by location and over time. Free titles are not generally available for offline download under the service rules.

Why do I still see ads if I pay for Prime Video ad-free?
You can still see advertisements on free ad-supported programs, live television, and sports even when you pay for an ad-free Prime Video option. The ad-free option primarily changes the treatment of eligible Prime subscription content; it does not turn every category inside Prime Video into an ad-free service.
This is why a former Freevee program may show advertisements after moving into Prime Video. The free replacement is still funded by advertising. Amazon’s Prime Video Ad Free help page specifically explains that some free ad-supported programming, live content, and sports can continue to contain ads.
Will every former Freevee title remain free?
No. Amazon has not guaranteed that every title previously available through Freevee will remain free forever. Streaming licenses expire, catalogs rotate, and rights differ by country or region.
A former Freevee movie or series may become unavailable, move to a paid subscription, require a rental or purchase, or return under a different access tier. A permanent list of “Freevee shows” would therefore become outdated quickly. Check the title page in the target country before promising that a specific program is free.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Amazon’s announcement established the migration of the free programming model, not a permanent guarantee for every individual title or a fixed catalog size. No reliable current figure establishing a guaranteed catalog total was identified for the replacement tier.
What are the best free alternatives to Freevee?
The best alternative depends on whether you want to choose a specific movie, browse scheduled channels, or combine free on-demand viewing with live television. Tubi is strongest for free on-demand browsing, Pluto TV is particularly suited to a cable-like live guide, and Plex combines free on-demand titles with live channels.
| Service | Best for | Content emphasis | Devices and account notes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tubi | Choosing free movies and television on demand | Free, legal, ad-supported on-demand programming | Web, mobile devices, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, and selected smart TVs; Tubi says no subscription fee or credit card is required. | Titles, advertising, and geographic availability can change. |
| Pluto TV | Watching scheduled channels and background television | Free live-TV channels with a program guide, plus on-demand navigation | Its U.S. service page provides live-TV browsing; exact access and features depend on location and device. | Do not assume a fixed channel count or that Pluto TV has the same catalog as Freevee. |
| Plex | Combining free on-demand titles with live channels | Free, ad-supported movies, television, and live TV | Browsers, mobile devices, smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Chromecast, game consoles, and other supported platforms. | Geographic and licensing restrictions can change the catalog; Plex Pass does not remove ads from Plex-provided free content. |
| Prime Video free programming | Keeping free viewing alongside other Prime Video content | Selected free Amazon MGM, licensed movies and series, and FAST channels | Amazon account and compatible Prime Video device; title-level labels determine access. | The Prime Video interface also includes paid rentals, purchases, subscriptions, live TV, and sports. |
Which free streaming service should you choose?
Choose Prime Video if you want to look for a particular former Freevee title and are comfortable checking its access label. Choose Tubi if you want a free on-demand catalog without a subscription fee or credit card requirement. Choose Pluto TV if you prefer scheduled channels and a live guide. Choose Plex if you want both free on-demand programming and live channels across a broad range of devices.
All four options are ad-supported in their free categories. None should be treated as a permanent replacement catalog, because licensing and geography can change what a viewer sees.

Do you need a Fire TV Stick to watch free streaming apps?
No. A Fire TV Stick is optional hardware, not a requirement for free streaming. You can use a browser, phone, tablet, compatible smart TV, game console, Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, or another supported streaming device when the relevant app is available.
If your television does not already have Prime Video, Tubi, Pluto TV, or Plex, an Amazon Fire TV Stick HD can add those apps. The device does not provide free content by itself, remove advertisements, include Amazon Prime, or guarantee access to a particular movie or show. A compatible television, an internet connection, and the relevant app are still necessary.
Amazon, Tubi, and Plex document supported device access in their respective service and help pages: Prime Video’s terms, Tubi’s official service page, and Plex’s Movies & Shows overview.

- Check the title label: confirm that the detail page says the program is free or ad-supported.
- Check the country: licensing determines whether a movie, series, or channel is available in your region.
- Expect ads: free programming is funded by advertising, and live or sports content can have separate ad rules.
- Check the access tier: Prime Video search results can mix free titles with Prime-included programs, rentals, purchases, and channel subscriptions.
- Check the device: use a supported browser, mobile device, smart TV, console, or streaming player.
- Recheck changing titles: a program that was free in Freevee may later become unavailable or paid.
The practical answer is simple: Freevee’s standalone identity has ended, but free streaming has not. Open Prime Video, sign in with an Amazon account, and verify the title-level free or ad-supported label before playback. If the program is no longer free, compare Tubi, Pluto TV, or Plex rather than assuming that a former Freevee listing still has the same rights.

Do I need Amazon Prime to watch Freevee shows?
You do not necessarily need Amazon Prime to watch a title on Prime Video when the title is explicitly marked free or free with ads. You generally still need an Amazon account and a compatible device.
Why am I seeing ads if I pay for Prime Video ad-free?
Yes. Free programming carried into Prime Video remains ad-supported, and Prime Video’s ad-free option does not necessarily remove advertising from free ad-supported programs, live television, or sports.
What is the best free alternative to Freevee?
Tubi is a strong choice for free on-demand movies and television, Pluto TV is particularly useful for scheduled live channels, and Plex combines free on-demand programming with live TV. Catalogs and availability vary by location and can change.
Do I need a Fire TV Stick to watch free streaming apps?
No. You can watch free streaming apps through a compatible browser, phone, tablet, smart TV, game console, Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, or another supported device. A Fire TV Stick is only useful when your television lacks a compatible app or streaming platform.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Freevee’s app and branding were retired, but Amazon continues to offer selected free, ad-supported programming through Prime Video. You do not necessarily need Prime, but you do need to verify the individual title’s free label, expect ads, and account for regional and licensing changes. Tubi, Pluto TV, and Plex provide legitimate alternatives with different on-demand and live-TV strengths.
