Amazon Music has two different kinds of downloads. Prime and Amazon Music Unlimited let eligible users save tracks for offline playback inside the Amazon Music app. Those protected downloads are not ordinary MP3 files and cannot be copied to an MP3 player, USB drive, VLC, or another music app. Music purchased from Amazon’s digital music store can be downloaded as a local file, backed up, and imported into compatible software.
Choose the method below according to your goal: use an app download for a flight or data-free listening; purchase the music when you need a transferable audio file.
What “download” means on Amazon Music

Amazon describes catalog playback as protected and restricts copying outside Amazon Music (Amazon developer playback documentation). A song saved to a library or playlist is not necessarily a song you own.
Which Amazon Music plans allow downloads?
Amazon Music Prime
In the United States, Amazon’s current FAQ limits Prime offline listening to eligible All-Access Playlists. A download button will not necessarily appear for an individual song or album. Older guides claiming unrestricted Prime downloads are out of date (Amazon Music FAQ).

Amazon Music Unlimited
Unlimited supports offline downloads of songs, albums, and playlists in the Amazon Music app. Standard, HD, Ultra HD, and Spatial Audio versions are available only where the title, device, app, network, and plan support them (FAQ).
Purchased digital music
Music bought from Amazon’s digital music store can be downloaded as a local file and imported into compatible players such as iTunes or Windows Media Player (Amazon purchased-music help). A title merely included with Prime or Unlimited is not a purchased download.
Free or ad-supported access
Do not assume that a free account includes offline downloads. Availability depends on account tier, title rights, device, and country.
Download subscription music for offline listening
iPhone and iPad: Unlimited
- Open Amazon Music and sign in to the eligible account.
- Find a song, album, or playlist.
- Open the three-dot menu or tap the download icon.
- Select Download and wait for the completion indicator.
- Disable Wi-Fi and cellular data, then play the item to verify offline access.

iPhone and iPad: Prime
- Open Amazon Music and locate an eligible All-Access Playlist.
- Open the playlist and tap its download control.
- Check the downloaded section, then test with Airplane Mode enabled.
Prime does not promise an offline button for every individual catalog track or album (Amazon Music FAQ).
Android: subscription content
- Open the Amazon Music app.
- Find the eligible song, album, or playlist.
- Use the three-dot menu or download icon and choose Download.
- Open the app’s downloaded or offline section.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data to test playback.
These downloads remain inside Amazon Music, not in the phone’s ordinary music library.
Fire tablets and desktop apps
Use the item’s download control in the Amazon Music app. Fire Tablet settings may include Play downloads first; availability and wording vary by platform (Fire Tablet help). The Windows and Mac apps do not convert Prime or Unlimited titles into transferable computer files.
Download purchased Amazon music files
iOS
- Open Amazon Music and select Library.
- Scroll the category buttons until Purchased appears.
- For a song, open its three-dot menu and select Download; for an album, use its download icon.
- Copy the files if you want a backup while retaining access in the app.

Android
- Open Library, then Purchased.
- Open the three-dot menu for the song or album and choose Download.
- Purchased files normally save in an Amazon Music folder, but the exact location varies by device, Android version, and app version.
- Connect the phone to a computer with USB and copy the files to the desired location.
Amazon’s Android instructions apply to purchased content; Prime and Unlimited titles cannot be copied to a computer or played in another app (Android help).
Web browser
- Open the Amazon Music web player and sign in.
- Select Library, locate Purchased, and find the song or album.
- Open the three-dot menu and select Download.
- Find the file in the browser’s normal Downloads folder and copy it to your music library.
This browser method is for purchases, not subscription tracks (Amazon browser-download help).
Windows and Mac
- Open the Amazon Music desktop app and choose Library.
- Select Songs or Albums, then Purchased.
- Open the context menu beside a track or album and choose Download.
- Look in the Amazon Music folder—typically under My Music on Windows or the Music folder on Mac.
The exact location depends on your operating-system and app settings (Amazon desktop help).
Make sure playback is really offline
- Download over Wi-Fi and wait for the completed-download indicator.
- Enable Play downloads first when your platform exposes that setting.
- Test with Airplane Mode, or disable both Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- If authorization fails, reconnect while online and reopen Amazon Music so the account can validate.
Subscription access is not an indefinite offline guarantee. Downloads can stop working after entitlement ends, an account changes, catalog rights change, storage is cleared, or the app is reinstalled.

Quality, storage, and data use
Amazon gives these approximate sizes for a 3½-minute song: SD lossy about 9 MB, HD lossless about 51 MB, and Ultra HD lossless about 153 MB (Amazon Music FAQ). Actual size varies with track length, codec, bit depth, sample rate, and the available version.

Using Amazon’s estimates, 100 songs would occupy roughly 900 MB at SD, 5.1 GB at HD, or 15.3 GB at Ultra HD. These are planning estimates, not guaranteed sizes.
Why the Download button is missing
- A Prime title is not part of an eligible All-Access Playlist.
- You are viewing subscription content in a browser or desktop context where file downloads are not offered.
- You are signed into a different Amazon account from the one that owns the purchase or subscription.
- The title is unavailable in your country or has left the catalog.
- The app is outdated or temporarily out of sync.
- The item is a podcast, station, or other content with different rules.
- The device lacks free storage.
- The subscription expired, was canceled, or is billed through another provider.
- The title was saved from a subscription catalog but never purchased.
If you believe you bought the music, check Library → Purchased, then verify Amazon order or digital-content history. Presence in a general library does not prove ownership.

Prime and Unlimited
Generally, no. Their offline copies are app-managed and protected. They cannot be imported as independent files into VLC, Windows Media Player, Poweramp, a DAW, a media server, another streaming service, an old MP3 player, or a car stereo reading a USB drive (Amazon help; Android help).

Purchased music
Purchased files can generally be copied to compatible devices, USB storage, and music-management software. Copy rather than move the originals, and keep a personal backup. Compatibility still depends on the file format and receiving device.
Converters and stream rippers
Do not use tools that bypass DRM or turn protected subscription downloads into MP3s. They may violate Amazon’s terms or copyright law and can expose your account and device to malware.
What happens after canceling Prime or Unlimited?
A canceled subscription normally remains active through the current billing cycle. When the entitlement ends, downloaded subscription tracks should not be treated as permanent files; offline access depends on the account, app authorization, and continuing catalog rights (Amazon Music FAQ; Amazon subscription-management information). Purchased downloads are different: retain and back up the local files, subject to Amazon’s terms and continued account access.

Choose app downloads if you already subscribe and only need convenient offline playback. Choose a purchase when you need files for independent hardware, backups, editing, or another music program. Amazon Music is a poor fit if unrestricted local ownership of a streaming catalog is your requirement.

Amazon’s current Unlimited signup page displays $11.99 per month for customers without Prime and $10.99 per month for Prime members, plus eligibility-based promotional trials. Offers auto-renew after the promotional period and can change (Amazon Music Unlimited). Annual figures shown across Amazon pages have inconsistent historical references, so verify the live checkout page before relying on an annual price. Prime’s music benefit is included with Prime, but its offline catalog is more limited (Amazon Prime).
Quick recovery checklist
Playback still uses data
- Confirm the download completed.
- Turn on Play downloads first, if available.
- Test in Airplane Mode.
- Reconnect and reopen the app to refresh authorization.
- Check the subscription account and storage.
A purchased song is missing
- Confirm the purchase used this Amazon account.
- Open Library → Purchased.
- Check order or digital-content history.
- Sign out and back in, then update the app.
- Distinguish an MP3 purchase from a CD, AutoRip entitlement, or subscription save.
Downloads vanished
Likely causes include subscription expiration, account mismatch, app deletion, catalog-rights changes, storage cleanup, corrupted app data, or required reauthorization. Reconnect to the account, check entitlement, and download again where permitted.
