Electronic Arts confirmed in September 2024 that it was developing a film based on The Sims with Amazon MGM Studios. Margot Robbie is attached as a producer through LuckyChap, but the cited reports do not confirm that she will act in the film. Kate Herron is directing and co-writing with Briony Redman.
Who is making The Sims movie?
EA’s September 17, 2024 announcement confirmed its partnership with Amazon MGM Studios, as well as LuckyChap’s involvement and Herron’s role as director. Redman is named as Herron’s co-writer. The announcement followed March 2024 trade reporting that Robbie and LuckyChap partners Josey McNamara and Tom Ackerley would produce alongside Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee; EA’s later announcement confirmed the Amazon MGM relationship. BBC Newsbeat’s announcement coverage reported that EA said it was too early to share details and expected to provide updates in 2025, the franchise’s 25th anniversary year.
Is Margot Robbie starring in The Sims movie?
Her confirmed connection in the reports is as a producer through LuckyChap, not as a cast member. A May 2025 report said it remained unclear whether she would act in the film. Do not treat her producing role as confirmation that she will appear onscreen.
What is known about the film’s development?
Writing update in May 2025
In May 2025, Herron said, “I’m just writing away, but we’re all feeling very good about it.” The report described the film as still in its writing phase at that time. This dated update does not establish the project’s status in October 2026. ComingSoon’s May 2025 report relayed Herron’s comments to Variety.

Roy Lee’s comparison in September 2025
Producer Roy Lee offered a broad comparison to The Lego Movie and Barbie, saying the film would be somewhere between them in spirit. He also called it “unique” in comments to The Direct, as quoted by GamesRadar in September 2025. This is a creative comparison, not a plot synopsis or a promise that the film will resemble either movie in specific ways.
When will The Sims movie come out?
GamesRadar reported in September 2025 that the film had no release date. The latest sourced development information here is from 2025, so a release date, current production stage, start of filming, cast list and plot are not established for October 2026. EA’s expectation of updates in 2025 was stated in 2024; it is not itself evidence that an update or production milestone followed.

What is The Sims, and do you need to play it first?
The Sims is a life-simulation series developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts. The original game launched in 2000. Players manage virtual characters and elements of their lives, including their homes. The BBC described The Sims 4 as the franchise’s fourth main installment in September 2024; that is a dated description, not a statement about the series’ current roadmap. Playing a game is optional background for understanding the film announcement.
