Short answer: Amazon has tightened how Kindle books can be downloaded, backed up and used outside its ecosystem, most notably by removing the website’s Download & Transfer via USB option on February 26, 2025. It has not generally ended legal household sharing. Amazon Family still lets eligible relatives share purchased Kindle books, while Kindle Unlimited sharing remains controlled by the primary subscriber. Since January 20, 2026, Amazon has also expanded EPUB and PDF downloads for verified purchasers of eligible DRM-free books.
What Amazon actually changed
Several different systems are often described as “Kindle sharing,” but they are not the same.
Amazon Family sharing
Amazon renamed Amazon Household as Amazon Family on March 7, 2025. Its approved household system can share eligible purchased Kindle books with another adult and child profiles. The sharing is tied to linked Amazon accounts and Family Library controls, not to handing someone an account password. See Amazon’s explanation of how Amazon Family works and its guide to sharing Kindle books.
Kindle Unlimited sharing
Kindle Unlimited is subscription access, not a permanent collection owned by every household member. The primary subscriber borrows a title and can then share that eligible loan with an Amazon Family member. The other adult does not receive an independent Kindle Unlimited borrowing account. Amazon’s instructions are in Share Kindle Unlimited Content with Amazon Family Members.

File delivery and local copies
Beginning February 26, 2025, Amazon removed Download & Transfer via USB from the Amazon website. That was a particular way to obtain Kindle ebook files for transfer to compatible older devices; it was not the abolition of every USB connection, personal-document workflow, or form of sideloading. Amazon’s customer-service notices are documented in its USB announcement and follow-up guidance.
Books already downloaded could continue to be read, and supported Wi-Fi Kindles, Kindle apps and Kindle for Web remained available. The change nevertheless removed a practical backup and delivery route for owners of older or poorly connected Kindles, readers who managed files locally, and people worried about losing access if a title, account or device later became unavailable. Ars Technica likewise described the change as the removal of the website download option rather than the end of all transfer methods: its report.
Is Amazon stopping family ebook sharing?
No—not generally. Purchased-book sharing remains an Amazon-supported feature, subject to eligibility and the continuing Family relationship. Adult members link their accounts and may have shared payment arrangements. You can share the whole eligible library or selected books through Amazon’s content-management controls.

That access is a permission attached to the owner’s account, not an independent copy transferred to the recipient. If an adult leaves Amazon Family or sharing is disabled, books owned by the other adult can disappear from the recipient’s library, even if they were downloaded earlier. The recipient’s own purchases remain in that person’s account. An Amazon forum explanation of this behavior is available under Family sharing not working.

How to share a purchased Kindle book
- Create or join an eligible Amazon Family and complete the adult-account link, or create a child profile.
- Open Amazon’s content-management page and choose Books.
- Select the title and choose the Family Library or Add to Library control.
- Select the family member who should receive access.
- Have the recipient synchronize the Kindle app or device while online.
Labels vary by marketplace, device generation and interface version. If the title does not appear, verify that both accounts are linked, ebook sharing is enabled, the recipient is using the intended account and the book is eligible.
How Kindle Unlimited sharing differs
- The primary Kindle Unlimited subscriber borrows the title.
- In the Kindle app’s sharing controls, choose Share Your Kindle Content.
- Select the Amazon Family member and the borrowed book.
- Choose Share Items; automatic sharing can be enabled where offered.
Only the primary subscriber can initiate borrowing. A loan can end when it is returned, when the subscription ends or when Amazon removes the title from the Kindle Unlimited catalog. Amazon’s general help page explains these limits in Learn About Kindle Unlimited. A family member therefore receives temporary reading access, not a permanent ebook license.

DRM, delivery and the 2026 EPUB/PDF exception
The USB change did not itself remove DRM. Delivery restriction concerns how Amazon sends a file; DRM governs whether authorized software and devices can open it; sharing restriction governs which account can access it. These are separate issues, and none should be treated as proof that every Kindle file is unrestricted or that copyright rules no longer apply.
Amazon’s Kindle terms describe a non-exclusive, personal and non-commercial right to view and use Kindle content through Kindle software, supported devices or other permitted parts of the service. That is closer to a platform license than ownership of an unrestricted EPUB. Subscription content remains available only while the relevant subscription or service permits it. Read the Kindle Store Terms of Use.
There is also a significant counterpoint to the lockdown narrative. Effective January 20, 2026, verified purchasers can download EPUB and PDF files for eligible books that the publisher has designated DRM-free. The policy does not cover Kindle Unlimited or other borrowed titles. Books published before December 9, 2025 may require the publisher to confirm the download option, and a DRM-setting change can take approximately 24–72 hours to reach readers. If a publisher later applies DRM, previously downloaded files remain available, but new downloads stop after the change. Amazon documents the rules in its Digital Rights Management guidance.

“DRM-free” means Amazon’s DRM has not been applied to that edition; it does not automatically authorize redistribution. Use the publisher’s permitted download and sharing terms.
What the policy means for long-term access
| Situation | What the reader has | What can end access |
|---|---|---|
| Purchased book shared through Amazon Family | Account-linked household access | Leaving Family, disabling sharing, account or device authorization problems |
| Kindle Unlimited book | Temporary subscription loan, shareable by the primary subscriber | Returning the loan, subscription ending or catalog removal |
| DRM-protected Kindle purchase | Use through authorized Kindle software or devices | Platform, account, device or title availability changes |
| Eligible DRM-free purchase after January 20, 2026 | Verified-purchaser EPUB/PDF download where enabled | Publisher status, eligibility and Amazon account access |
Amazon’s terms also say Kindle content, including subscription content, may be added or removed over time. A downloaded file is therefore not automatically a transferable, independent license.

A family member cannot see a shared book
- Confirm both adult accounts completed the Amazon Family link.
- Check that ebook sharing is enabled and the title is eligible.
- Verify the recipient is signed into the correct Amazon account.
- Synchronize the app or Kindle while connected to the internet.
- For Kindle Unlimited, confirm the primary subscriber borrowed and shared the title.
- Check whether the loan was returned or removed from the catalog.
Users frequently mistake sharing a Kindle Unlimited subscription for giving every adult independent borrowing rights. Amazon’s forum discussion of this confusion is here.

An older Kindle cannot receive a new purchase
Identify the exact model, country marketplace and failed function before drawing a conclusion. Possible causes include an unsupported generation, lost cellular or Wi-Fi compatibility, the removed USB delivery route, registration trouble, title-format incompatibility or an account mismatch. Current evidence here does not establish a universal worldwide cutoff for every older Kindle.
A shared book disappears
If Family Library sharing is turned off or the recipient leaves Amazon Family, losing access to the other adult’s books is expected. The downloaded data does not create a separate license for the recipient.
A practical preservation checklist
- Prefer DRM-free editions when a publisher offers them and download the permitted EPUB or PDF promptly.
- Keep legal local backups of those files and maintain current Amazon account-recovery details.
- Do not rely on Kindle Unlimited for permanent access to a book you must keep.
- Record the exact Kindle model and marketplace before replacing or troubleshooting a device.
- Do not assume a Kindle download can be moved to another account, or that USB transfer creates a new license.
- Do not give unrelated people an Amazon password; use Amazon Family for eligible household sharing.
- Do not treat DRM-free status as permission to redistribute a copyrighted book.
Readers who prioritize open formats may prefer an EPUB-oriented ecosystem such as Kobo, public-library lending through Libby, or local management of permitted files with Calibre. Those options do not transfer Amazon purchases automatically, but they can reduce dependence on a single account-controlled platform.
What “crackdown” means in 2026
The strongest evidence of a crackdown concerns portability: Amazon removed a major website-to-USB download path and continues to control access through accounts, authorized software, devices and subscriptions. At the same time, Amazon Family remains a legal route for household sharing, and eligible DRM-free purchases now have a more open EPUB/PDF download path. The policy is therefore restrictive and mixed—not a blanket ban on sharing.
