Amazing Red’s influence is best understood not as a settled claim that he was wrestling’s single most influential performer, but as a traceable chain: he fused several styles into a distinctive approach, shared ideas with collaborators, inspired wrestlers who studied his footage, and taught students at House of Glory. Kevin Owens, who watched Red highlight reels as a trainee, later said Red’s impact on many current leading wrestlers was “hard to measure.”
What made Amazing Red’s style distinctive?
Red describes his wrestling as a personal synthesis rather than a style borrowed from one source. He has cited WCW cruiserweights, lucha libre, Japanese wrestling and martial-arts films as influences, as well as the experience of being compared with Rey Mysterio. In an August 2026 interview, he summed up the result as “very movie, martial artist, Japan lucha American style.” Chris Van Vliet interview, August 13, 2026
That mix matters because Red says he was not trying to reproduce a move exactly as someone else performed it. He wanted familiar techniques to carry his own signature, testing variations until they felt distinct. As he put it, “if this move is done this way by 10 people, I have to be the one guy that did it this way.” The point is not that every move associated with Red began with him; it is that his approach emphasized adaptation and individual expression.
How much of Red’s influence came from collaboration?
Red’s own account makes clear that move development was often shared work. He named his cousins Joel and Jose Maximo of The Spanish Announce Team, along with Quiet Storm, Chris Divine and Brian XL, as people who helped develop ideas. A September 2026 Wrestling Inc. report recounts Red’s story that the Spanish Fly grew out of Joel playing with G.I. Joe figures: “Joel had this thing where he would do things with G.I. That story is valuable as Red’s recollection, not a definitive, independently established origin record. The same caution applies to Code Red, Infrared and other moves linked to him: the available accounts support a story of experimentation among friends and family, not a conclusive ruling on who first performed each move or when. Giving collaborators their due is part of describing Red’s influence accurately.
How did his style reach later wrestlers?
Through footage
Red’s influence traveled through matches and highlight reels. Kevin Owens has recalled watching Red highlights with fellow trainees in the early 2000s. In a public post dated November 25, 2025, Owens said the impact Red had on many of the current generation of leading talent was “hard to measure.” Wrestling Inc., November 27, 2025

Owens’s recollection offers a concrete example of transmission: younger wrestlers sought out Red’s work and discussed it while learning the craft. It is testimony from one prominent wrestler, not a survey of the industry, so it cannot establish how many performers were influenced or rank Red against every other innovator.
Through teaching at House of Glory
Red also describes a direct route of influence through training. He said teaching at House of Glory made him a better wrestler because explaining techniques and leading students forced him to communicate more clearly. “I’ve learned to be a better pro wrestler because of being a trainer at House of Glory,” he said in the 2026 interview. Press coverage likewise describes him as helping train a generation of wrestlers there.

Footage and instruction are different kinds of influence: one lets aspiring wrestlers study a style at a distance, while the other gives a trainer the chance to explain choices and technique directly. Red’s account supports both strands, though it does not quantify their reach.
Was Red deliberately shaping wrestling’s future?
Red’s account points more to a wrestler refining his own work than to someone consciously designing what wrestling would look like a decade later. He describes drawing from influences, trying variations and wanting to avoid being reduced to an imitation. The later spread of a style may come from people watching, borrowing, adapting and teaching it; that does not prove its originator predicted its eventual reach.

This distinction also keeps the argument proportionate. Owens’s praise, Red’s teaching history and the collaborative stories all support the case that Red mattered to later wrestlers. None supplies a representative count of those influenced, a complete comparison with other wrestlers, or a measurement that could settle the superlative in the title.

Red’s TNA Hall of Fame recognition and his return to a TNA ring in 2026 give the influence discussion a recent frame. In his August 2026 interview, he said he had previously declined Hall of Fame offers because he did not want to feel put in a box, then accepted after an emotional response from the locker room. He also described himself as still active and said he had worked regularly for House of Glory in recent years. Those are his reflections at that moment, not a current schedule or booking announcement.

For Red, recognition did not have to mean that his career was finished. He said, “I think from here on out, I’m never gonna retire. I’m just gonna let it happen.” His remarks place the Hall of Fame honor alongside an ongoing relationship with wrestling, rather than as a final verdict on his legacy.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The strongest case for Red’s influence rests on three connected points: his hybrid style and personal approach to familiar moves; the collaborative environment in which he says ideas developed; and the paths by which later wrestlers encountered his work, through both footage and teaching. That is a persuasive influence story, but not proof that Red alone invented every move associated with him or that he outranks every other wrestler in influence.
Available accounts include vivid first-person memories and peer recognition, not a full match database, a representative sample of influenced wrestlers or an objective comparison across eras. “The most influential” therefore works as an argument to examine, not a settled ranking. Red’s less easily measured legacy may be the way his work encouraged others to study, adapt and pass on a style of their own.
