SLAB is the first controller AlphaTheta and Serato describe as purpose-built for Serato Studio—but it is not restricted to that software. It offers native Serato Studio control, also supports Serato Sample and Serato DJ Pro in their respective licensing contexts, and can operate as a general MIDI controller with custom mappings. The more accurate shorthand is “built for Serato Studio,” not “usable only with Serato Studio.”
What SLAB is
SLAB is a compact, USB-powered MIDI pad controller developed by AlphaTheta in collaboration with Serato. Announced on December 4, 2025, it is designed to put Serato Studio’s sampling, sequencing and performance controls under your hands. It is a control surface, not a standalone sampler or groovebox: Serato Studio runs on a compatible computer, and the software must be downloaded separately. AlphaTheta’s announcement and the product specifications describe the hardware and its intended role.
What “first” and “exclusively” mean
AlphaTheta and Serato call SLAB the first MIDI controller specifically designed for Serato Studio. In practical terms, that means a purpose-built, advertised native control scheme for Studio rather than a generic controller that a user must map from scratch. The supplied product information does not establish a complete historical survey of every controller or custom mapping ever used with Serato Studio, so the “first” claim is best attributed to the companies.

Its general MIDI mode can be mapped in Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro and other MIDI-compatible software. Custom mapping is not the same as the ready-made Studio integration. How its controls fit a production workflow
SLAB’s point is less the number of controls than how they are assigned for Serato’s sample-led workflow. The 16 velocity-sensitive RGB pads support sample and drum triggering, finger drumming, step-sequencer entry, Pad FX, and keyboard-style or chromatic sample playback. Depending on the active mode, they can also support deck and scene selection.
- Chopping and shaping samples: Use the multifunction dial for sample scrubbing and slice editing, alongside cue and sample controls. Key shift and time stretch support further manipulation.
- Building drum patterns: The pads work with step sequencing, velocity control, note nudge and autoset drum patterns. These features give beat-makers a more tactile alternative to entering every hit with a mouse.
- Working with stems: The four touch-sensitive encoders can control stems in the relevant mode, as well as EQ, effects or general parameters such as BPM, key, attack and release.
- Adding movement: The 13 cm touch strip can be assigned to functions including filter, effects level, note repeat, pitch bend and swing. Its role depends on the current mode.
- Moving around a session: Dedicated transport and navigation controls, the dial and a dynamic LED display support library browsing, song-view or sample scrubbing, deck and scene selection, and focus control for selected parameters.
Other highlighted Studio functions include Auto Chord, autoset samples, per-pad control, Stems mode and automation. These are workflow tools within the software, not evidence that SLAB replaces the computer or the application.

Hardware, connection and what comes in the box
The controller has 16 velocity-sensitive RGB pads with adjustable aftertouch, four touch-sensitive encoders, a multifunction dial, a 13 cm touch strip, a dynamic LED display and dedicated transport and navigation controls. It connects over USB Type-C and is USB-powered. AlphaTheta lists its dimensions as approximately 284.3 × 209.0 × 44.6 mm, its weight as 1.0 kg (2.2 lb), and its power requirement as DC 5 V, 500 mA. Its compact size and weight make it easier to carry than larger studio surfaces, though that alone says nothing about travel durability.
The listed box contents are the SLAB controller, a USB cable, a Quick Start Guide, Precautions for Use and, in some regions, warranty information. Warranty terms vary by market; check the terms where you buy.

Software access and compatibility
Connecting SLAB unlocks the full version of Serato Studio while the controller is connected. That is a conditional software benefit, not a promise of a permanent standalone Studio license. Studio is not preloaded on the controller: you need to download it, sign in to an account and use a compatible computer. The SLAB manual explains the connection-based unlock.
- Serato Studio: Native integration and the full-version unlock while SLAB is connected.
- Serato Sample: Native control, but Sample requires its own paid license. The Studio unlock does not include it.
- Serato DJ Pro: Supported as an Official Serato Accessory; DJ Pro use still depends on the applicable compatible hardware or license state. SLAB is not a full replacement for a DJ controller.
- Other DAWs: General MIDI mode enables custom mappings. Expect to select the controller, assign controls and save or import a mapping; the sources do not establish equivalent factory integration across other DAWs.
The available quick-start material warns that Serato software is not compatible with Windows on Arm computers because it uses the AVX instruction set. Check Serato’s current system requirements before buying; meeting a listed minimum does not guarantee operation on every computer. Do not rely on an old operating-system list for current compatibility.

Setup and firmware
For first use, create or sign in to a Pioneer DJ/AlphaTheta account and register the controller with its serial number, purchase date and retailer. Keep your invoice available. Download and install Serato Studio, then connect SLAB by USB-C and launch the software. The full-version unlock should apply while the hardware is connected. Registration, installation and account access are still part of setup, even though the supported Studio control scheme is native.

- With SLAB connected, launch Serato Studio. If prompted, choose Visit Download Page and download the firmware utility for your operating system.
- Disconnect SLAB. Hold Shift and Record while reconnecting it to enter update mode.
- Run the firmware updater and click Start. Do not disconnect the controller during the update.
- After the controller restarts, hold Strip Mode to check the firmware version.
Firmware utilities and screen labels can change, so follow the instructions supplied with the current firmware download if they differ. The sequence above is documented in the SLAB quick-start guide.
If Serato Studio does not unlock
- Confirm Studio is installed and that you are signed in to the intended account.
- Connect SLAB directly to the computer rather than through an unreliable hub, and try the supplied USB-C cable.
- Check that Studio and the controller firmware are current, then restart Studio with SLAB already connected.
- If registration may be incomplete or tied to the wrong account, verify the serial-number registration and consult current AlphaTheta or Serato support.
The quick-start guide cautions that third-party USB cables may introduce latency. These checks are sensible first steps, not a guarantee that every connection or licensing problem has the same cause.
Is $329 worth it?
US listings from Sweetwater and Guitar Center showed SLAB at $329 as of August 18, 2026. Retail price and availability can change. At that price, the key question is not simply whether it has enough pads and knobs; it is whether the native workflow and connection-based Studio unlock matter to you. Larger production controllers are a better category to consider if you need faders, a keyboard or broader mixing control. A standalone sampler or groovebox is the right category if you want to make music without a computer. Those alternatives solve different problems; they do not offer SLAB’s direct Serato Studio integration.

Verdict
SLAB earns the description “first controller purpose-built for Serato Studio” as a claim made by AlphaTheta and Serato. Calling it “built exclusively” is less precise: it is optimized for Studio, not confined to it. Buy it for the hands-on Serato workflow and conditional Studio access—not because it is standalone, universally plug-and-play across DAWs, or a substitute for the separate licensing required by Sample and DJ Pro.
