May 2024 was a packed month for Max in the U.S., led by the return of Hacks, the premieres of Turtles All the Way Down and Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, the arrival of The Iron Claw, and the late-month debut of Dune: Part Two. The schedule also included HBO documentaries, Adult Swim comedies, reality and lifestyle programs from Warner Bros. Discovery networks, and a large collection of licensed films.
This is the historical U.S. Max schedule for May 2024. “Coming to Max” did not mean that every title was a Max Original, and an arrival date does not indicate how long a licensed title remained available.
What were the biggest May 2024 releases on Max?
- Hacks, Season 3 — May 2: Deborah Vance and Ava returned for the third season of the acclaimed comedy.
- Turtles All the Way Down — May 2: This Max Original film adapts John Green’s novel and follows Aza Holmes, a teenager dealing with obsessive-compulsive disorder while reconnecting with her childhood friend Davis. If you want to compare the adaptation with its source material, John Green’s Turtles All the Way Down is the novel behind the film.
- Pretty Little Liars: Summer School — May 9: The second-season continuation of the Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin story arrived under its new subtitle.
- The Iron Claw — May 10: Sean Durkin’s wrestling drama about the Von Erich family stars Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Holt McCallany, and Maura Tierney.
- Smiling Friends, Season 2 — May 13: Adult Swim’s surreal animated comedy returned for a second season.
- STAX: Soulsville U.S.A. — May 20: This HBO documentary series examines the story of Stax Records and its place in American music.
- MoviePass, MovieCrash — May 29: The HBO documentary chronicles MoviePass and the collapse of its business model.
- Dune: Part Two — May 31: Denis Villeneuve’s science-fiction sequel became the month’s major late-arriving film event on Max.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s May announcement highlighted many of these releases, while contemporary schedule guides from TV Guide and TechRadar supplied the complete dated list.

Best of Max’s May 2024 lineup
For scripted television: Hacks and Pretty Little Liars: Summer School
Hacks was the clearest returning-series draw. Season 3 continued the professional and personal relationship between veteran comedian Deborah Vance and younger writer Ava. For viewers looking for a darker teen mystery, Pretty Little Liars: Summer School continued the storyline established by Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin.

For a book-to-screen adaptation: Turtles All the Way Down
Turtles All the Way Down centers on Aza Holmes, whose obsessive thoughts shape how she experiences friendship, romance, and everyday life. The film is based on John Green’s novel; the story’s depiction of mental-health struggles is central rather than incidental. Readers who prefer to encounter the source material first can look for John Green’s Turtles All the Way Down before or after watching the Max film. The film should not be treated as a substitute for professional mental-health information.

Sean Durkin’s The Iron Claw dramatizes the Von Erich family’s wrestling legacy and the tragedies surrounding it. Its ensemble includes Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Holt McCallany, and Maura Tierney. The film is based on real people and events, but—as with most historical dramas—viewers should distinguish a dramatized narrative from a complete documentary account.
For music documentaries: STAX: Soulsville U.S.A. and Stop Making Sense
The May lineup offered two very different music-focused choices. STAX: Soulsville U.S.A. is an HBO documentary series about the influential Stax Records story, while Stop Making Sense is the celebrated concert film documenting Talking Heads’ live performance. One is a historical music series; the other is a performance film, making them complementary rather than interchangeable viewing.

- Stunning 4K and Dolby Vision streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group

- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
For animation and comedy: Smiling Friends, Season 2
Adult Swim’s Smiling Friends returned on May 13 with more of its offbeat animated comedy. It is one of the month’s most distinctive choices for viewers who want something short-form, surreal, and substantially less conventional than a traditional sitcom.
For documentaries about businesses and institutions: MoviePass, MovieCrash
MoviePass, MovieCrash examines the rise and collapse of MoviePass, the subscription service that promised unusually inexpensive access to theatrical films. It is a natural choice for documentary viewers interested in technology, entertainment economics, startups, and the tension between rapid growth and sustainable business practices.
For the month’s major blockbuster: Dune: Part Two
Dune: Part Two arrived on May 31, continuing Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science-fiction saga. Because it follows the first Dune film, watching that movie first is the clearest way to follow the political factions, character relationships, and larger conflict. The Max arrival was a streaming date—not an indication that a physical edition was included with a Max subscription. Collectors who prefer discs could separately check the availability of the Dune: Part Two 4K UHD Blu-ray.
