The 2022 All Quiet on the Western Front keeps Erich Maria Remarque’s antiwar outlook but changes major episodes and gives Paul’s death a dramatically different ending. Lewis Milestone’s 1930 film covers more of the novel’s events, including Paul’s leave at home, though it also rearranges and omits material. Both films adapt Remarque’s 1929 novel; the 2022 film is not a remake of the 1930 picture.

What the novel is about—and what it is not
Published in 1929, Remarque’s novel follows fictional young German soldiers through the bodily and psychological costs of World War I. Its account is fragmented and close to the soldiers’ experience, moving among front-line events, memories, and reflections rather than presenting a simple campaign history. Paul Bäumer and his comrades are not literal historical people, though Remarque drew on his own wartime memories and other people’s experiences. Historian Daniel Schönpflug described the book’s achievement this way: “Remarque gives a face to the nameless torment of war.”
The novel’s publication history has more than one reported measure. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum estimates that almost one million copies sold in Germany during 1929. Netflix Tudum, reporting historian Schönpflug’s account, gives a different early figure: 450,000 copies in the first few weeks and 26 translations soon published. Those figures refer to different scopes and should not be treated as competing estimates of the same period.

Which episodes changed in the 2022 film?
Edward Berger’s 2022 German-language adaptation preserves the antiwar premise but reshapes the novel’s selection and sequence of events. It emphasizes the final days of the war, the material churn of the front, and a political storyline that the book does not contain.
What the 2022 film adds and changes at the start
The film opens with a dead soldier’s uniform being reclaimed, cleaned, and issued to Paul. The novel does not use that sequence in the same form. It does, however, make the reuse of equipment tangible in a way that echoes the book’s recurring image of the dead Kemmerich’s “good boots” passing from one soldier to another.
In the film, Paul and his classmates volunteer after a patriotic school speech, but the Remarque-Friedenszentrum notes that their decision is shown before the speech. In the novel, the speech precedes their decision to enlist. The difference shifts the emphasis of the opening: the film’s sequence foregrounds the boys’ eagerness, while the novel shows the teacher’s influence before they act.

What the 2022 film leaves out
The 2022 film omits several episodes that give the novel much of its range beyond combat:

- His hospital stay and encounter with Russian prisoners.
- The Kaiser’s visit and the soldiers’ subsequent discussion of why the war exists.
- The novel’s episode involving French women and food: Paul, Kropp, and Leer visit the women after bringing food.
These cuts narrow the 2022 film’s attention to military authority, the home front, captivity, and the difficulty of returning to civilian life. The film retains Paul and Kat’s theft of food as a moment of warmth, but changes the episode: they steal a goose together.
What the 2022 film adds
The film alternates the front-line story with Matthias Erzberger’s armistice negotiations at Compiègne. Erzberger was a historical politician; the negotiations are historical framing absent from Remarque’s novel. The nationalist General Friedrich, by contrast, is fictional. His opposition to the armistice creates a dramatic contrast between efforts to end the war and soldiers still being sent into battle.

Berger, who directed and co-wrote the film, said, “The novel was always the guiding light,” and explained, “It was important to me to take on the German perspective.” He described that perspective as “marked by grief and shame, sorrow and death, destruction and guilt….” These comments describe his stated approach; they do not mean the film follows the novel closely in every plot detail.
Why Paul dies differently in the novel and the 2022 film
The endings make different effects through the timing and circumstances of Paul’s death. In the novel, Paul dies during a quiet period before the war ends. The brief official report says that there was nothing new on the Western Front, supplying the book’s title. That understated close can be read as showing how an individual life may disappear without notice amid a vast war.

Putting his death at the moment the fighting is about to stop makes the ending’s waste immediate and chronological: the soldiers are still being killed as the deadline approaches.

How the 1930 film compares with the novel
Lewis Milestone’s 1930 film is closer to the novel in the range of events it covers than Berger’s 2022 film, but it does not reproduce the novel’s form. It puts events in chronological order instead of retaining the book’s shifts through memory and reflection, and it omits episodes, including the Kaiser visit.
The 1930 film does include Paul’s leave in his hometown. His encounters with civilians who cannot understand life at the front give the home-front estrangement a place in the story that the 2022 film does not. The 1930 adaptation remains a Hollywood production: American actors play German soldiers. Universal lists the film as directed by Milestone, released in 1930, and running 2 hours 13 minutes. Its current catalog includes digital, Blu-ray, and DVD formats; the listing alone does not establish the restoration, soundtrack, or extras of a particular edition.

These differences shape more than fidelity. The 1930 film approaches the story through the conventions and performers of American studio cinema; the 2022 film presents it as a German-language adaptation and uses sound and compression to create a different texture. Neither is simply the definitive screen version of the novel.

Which version should you read or watch?
- Choose the novel for its shifting, soldier-close form and its attention to military authority, homecoming, and the survivors’ inability to resume civilian life.
- Choose the 1930 film if you want a screen adaptation that includes Paul’s home leave and covers more of the novel’s episodes, while presenting events in a more chronological order.
- Choose the 2022 film for a German-language adaptation centered on the last days of the war, with an added armistice storyline and a sharply altered ending.
Reading the novel in English
The English text you read can affect its sound. A 2025 discussion in The Atlantic distinguishes A. W. Wheen’s original 1929 translation, described there as frequently stilted and labored, from Kurt Beals’s newer, more colloquial translation. They are different English readings of Remarque, not evidence that one translation is the only definitive text.
Dates and censorship context
The 2022 film premiered in Toronto on September 12, 2022, opened theatrically in Germany on September 29, and began worldwide streaming on Netflix on October 28, according to the Remarque-Friedenszentrum. It was completed months before Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, so it may resonate with later events but was not made in response to that invasion.
The 1930 film faced a different reception in Germany. The US Holocaust Memorial Museum documents Nazi-led disruption and protests followed by censorship and a ban there, as well as a more-censored version for German audiences in 1931. This is a history of censorship in Germany, not a claim that the film was banned everywhere.
