Three were born to Biden and his first wife, Neilia Hunter Biden. Ashley, his youngest child, was born to Biden and Jill Biden.
The family’s story includes public service, military service, addiction and recovery, political controversy, and profound loss. It also contains a recurring source of confusion: Joe Biden’s daughter Naomi, who died as an infant, is not the same person as his granddaughter Naomi Biden.

Beau Biden
Joseph Robinette “Beau” Biden III was Joe Biden’s eldest child. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on February 3, 1969.

Beau built a career in law and public service. He served as Delaware’s attorney general from 2007 through 2015, focusing on responsibilities that included criminal prosecution and public safety. He also joined the Delaware Army National Guard in 2003. He became a major and deployed to Iraq in 2008–09, later receiving the Bronze Star and Legion of Merit.
Beau and his wife, Hallie Biden, had two children, Natalie and Hunter. In 2015, Beau died from brain cancer at the age of 46. His death deeply affected his father and family. Biden later said the loss was among the reasons he decided not to seek the presidency in 2016, although reducing that decision to one explanation oversimplifies the circumstances.
Hunter Biden
Robert Hunter Biden was born in Wilmington on February 4, 1970, one day after Beau’s first birthday. He attended Georgetown University and graduated from Yale Law School in 1996.
Hunter worked in law, lobbying, consulting and business. His service on the board of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma, from 2014 to 2019, became a central political controversy because his father was vice president of the United States during much of that period and was involved in U.S. policy toward Ukraine. Hunter’s board service ended in 2019; descriptions that present him as a current Burisma board member are outdated.

Hunter has spoken publicly about substance use and addiction, including in his memoir, Beautiful Things. His legal history became another major political issue. On December 1, 2024, President Biden granted Hunter a full and unconditional federal pardon. The pardon covered federal offenses Hunter had committed or might have committed between January 1, 2014, and December 1, 2024. It did not cover every possible offense across his entire lifetime.
Hunter has children from earlier relationships and a son named Beau with his wife, Melissa Cohen Biden. That younger Beau should not be confused with Joe Biden’s late son.
Naomi Biden
Naomi Christina Biden was Joe Biden’s youngest child with Neilia. She was approximately 13 months old when she died on December 18, 1972.
Neilia was driving Beau, Hunter and Naomi to shop for a Christmas tree in Delaware when another vehicle, a tractor-trailer, struck their car. Neilia and Naomi were killed. Beau and Hunter survived but suffered serious injuries.
The tragedy occurred before Joe Biden became a nationally prominent figure. He had recently won election to the U.S. Senate, and the crash shaped the family’s life for decades. It is also why accounts of Biden’s children sometimes require careful wording: his daughter Naomi died in 1972, while his granddaughter Naomi Biden is a different person.
Naomi Biden and granddaughter Naomi Biden
Hunter Biden’s daughter Naomi became publicly known in her own right, including when she married Peter Neal at the White House on November 19, 2022. That wedding involved Joe Biden’s granddaughter, not his daughter. Joe Biden’s daughter Naomi died as an infant roughly five decades earlier.
Some social-media posts and older accounts have called Biden’s daughter “Amy” or “Amy Biden.” Official and major-news accounts generally identify her as Naomi Biden.
Ashley Biden
Ashley Blazer Biden is Joe Biden’s only child with Jill Biden. She was born in Delaware on June 8, 1981, after Joe and Jill Biden married in 1977.

Public biographies often repeat older descriptions of a person’s job. In Ashley Biden’s case, publicly available reporting does not establish a current professional role, so past positions should not automatically be presented as her present employment.
