Ransom Canyon is built around three Texas ranches, but its conflicts are never only about cattle or land. The Netflix drama uses the Double K, Bar W and Fuller ranches as the setting for family grudges, inherited grief, romantic rivalries and a fight over who gets to decide the town’s future.
This guide covers the principal cast and characters through Season 2, including the ranch owners, their employees, the younger generation, law enforcement and the people who complicate the central relationships. Spoilers for both seasons follow.
The ranch owners and their closest allies
Josh Duhamel as Staten Kirkland
Staten is the central rancher in Ransom Canyon and the owner of the Double K Ranch. He inherited the property from his grandfather and treats preserving it as a personal duty. Outside interests, family disputes and financial pressure all threaten the way he believes the ranch should be run.
Staten is also carrying substantial grief. He is mourning his wife and his son, Randall, and that loss helps explain his guarded, isolated nature. His long-running connection with Quinn O’Grady is one of the show’s emotional anchors.

Season 2 turns Staten’s family history into a direct threat when his father, Sam, attempts to take control of the Double K. Staten is therefore fighting on two fronts: to keep the ranch and to establish his authority within his own family.
Eoin Macken as Davis Collins
Davis owns the Bar W Ranch and is Staten’s principal rival. Their rivalry is unusually personal: Davis was married to Staten’s late wife, making him Staten’s brother-in-law as well as a competing ranch owner.
The two men also differ in their approach to the land. Staten is determined to protect the Double K from outside control, while Davis is more willing to consider selling or leveraging the Bar W to deal with its debts. His financial calculations repeatedly put him at odds with the values Staten represents.
Davis is also Quinn’s other major romantic connection. His presence turns Quinn’s history with Staten into a triangle involving love, loyalty and old family wounds.

Cap Fuller owns Fuller Ranch, the third major legacy ranch in the community. A former Army captain, Cap is blunt, stubborn and deeply resistant to the idea of selling his land.
Cap’s ranch work conceals unresolved grief. He lost his only son in Afghanistan and has responded by burying himself in work and alcohol. His relationship with Yancy Grey gradually gives him a different role: employer, mentor and eventually benefactor.
Cap is largely an original television character rather than a direct adaptation of one figure from Jodi Thomas’ source novels. Series creator April Blair has said that Cap was formed by combining several older residents from the books into one character.
Jack Schumacher as Yancy Grey
Yancy arrives as a drifter whose story is defined by concealment. He has a history of deception and con work, but his time at Fuller Ranch becomes an attempt to live honestly and become someone better than the man he used to be.
Cap hires him as a ranch hand and foreman. Yancy’s relationship with Ellie Estevez becomes increasingly serious, but his past follows him to town when Sidney arrives. She is not simply an old girlfriend: she is Yancy’s legal wife, and their marriage began as part of one of his earlier cons.
Rank #2
Yancy’s position changes dramatically after Cap’s death. He inherits Fuller Ranch, making the former outsider one of the town’s significant landowners. His inheritance also places him at the center of the continuing struggle over ranch ownership and legitimacy.
Brett Cullen as Samuel “Sam” Kirkland
Sam is Staten’s father. He left ranching for a career in the Texas Senate and returns to Ransom Canyon after losing a Senate election.
His return is not a quiet retirement. In Season 2, Sam challenges Staten for control of the Double K and takes over its operations. The conflict makes Sam an antagonist within the Kirkland family and forces Staten to defend both his inheritance and his right to run it.

Jake is Staten’s right-hand man at the Double K Ranch. He is one of the people Staten relies on when the family struggle over the ranch escalates. In Season 2, Jake helps Staten work to reclaim control after Sam takes over the property’s operations.
Steve Howey as Levi
Levi is Staten’s estranged half-brother. Born out of wedlock, he grew up feeling excluded from the Kirkland family, and that rejection has left him with deep resentment toward them.
Series creator April Blair describes Levi as a “mountain man poet.” He lives apart from the family and brings a different kind of ranch-country perspective to the Kirkland story: one shaped less by inheritance than by being denied a place within it.
Kenneth Miller as Freddie
Freddie has a criminal past and becomes entangled in the conflict surrounding Staten, Sam and Yancy. He is not one of the three principal ranch owners, but his ties to the wider ranch community make him part of the show’s larger web of loyalty and trouble.

Kit is Lucas Russell’s older brother and a habitual troublemaker. In Season 2, he takes a job with Sam, putting him on the opposite side of the Double K dispute from Lucas, who continues working for Staten.
Kit’s personal choices intensify the family and ranch conflicts. He pursues Lauren Brigman, who is Lucas’s girlfriend, and he previously had a relationship with Lauren’s mother, Margaret. His presence therefore threatens both brothers’ already fragile futures.

Quinn, Staten and the central romance
Minka Kelly as Quinn O’Grady
Quinn is a former concert pianist who spent time in New York before returning to Ransom Canyon. She runs Gracie’s, the local dance hall, with her close friend and business partner Ellie.
Quinn has loved Staten for years and was also the best friend of his late wife. That history gives their relationship an intimacy—and a complication—that neither can easily escape. Davis, meanwhile, remains another important connection from Quinn’s past.

Season 2 adds a new rival to the romantic conflict. Quinn returns after six months in New York, where she worked with the New York Philharmonic, and becomes caught between Staten and Oliver, the musician she met there.
Ben Robson as Oliver
Oliver is the musician Quinn falls for in New York. He follows her back to Ransom Canyon and proposes, making him Staten’s most direct romantic rival in Season 2. His arrival tests whether Quinn is returning to her old life by choice or simply by habit.
The younger generation
Lizzy Greene as Lauren Brigman
Lauren is Sheriff Dan Brigman’s daughter and the head cheerleader at Ransom High. At the beginning of the story, she is focused on leaving town through a cheerleading scholarship.
Her romantic life changes from her initial connection with Reid Collins to her relationship with Lucas Russell. In Season 2, a serious injury ends her cheerleading future, forcing her to reconsider the path she had planned. She is also caught between Lucas and Kit, while dealing with the devastating revelation that her mother, Margaret, caused the accident that killed Randall.
Garrett Wareing as Lucas Russell
Lucas is Kit’s younger brother. The brothers live in a trailer park after their father abandoned them, and Lucas works to build a more stable future for himself.
He takes a job at Staten’s ranch and falls in love with Lauren. Lucas initially competes with Reid for Lauren’s attention, but the two boys eventually develop an unlikely friendship. Season 2 puts Lucas under new pressure when Kit’s job with Sam and his pursuit of Lauren place the brothers on opposing sides.
Andrew Liner as Reid Collins
Reid is Davis Collins’ son, Staten’s nephew and the star quarterback at Ransom High. He begins the series as Lauren’s boyfriend and appears to be the expected heir to the Collins family ranch.
Rank #4
Reid initially seems privileged and arrogant, but his experiences with Staten and the realities of ranch life produce a significant emotional shift. His story is partly about discovering that inheritance and status do not automatically provide maturity.
Quinn’s family and the Gracie’s crew
Marianly Tejada as Ellie Estevez
Ellie is Quinn’s close friend and business partner at Gracie’s. Tough, practical and protective, she often acts as one of the dance hall’s stabilising forces.
She falls in love with Yancy, but Sidney’s arrival threatens the relationship because Sidney is still Yancy’s legal wife. Season 2 adds another complication: Ellie is pregnant with Yancy’s child.
Patricia Clarkson as Claire
Claire is Quinn and Angie’s mother. She returns in Season 2 intending to sell the family home, creating a fresh threat to Quinn’s attempt to rebuild her life in Ransom Canyon.
Claire’s motives are deliberately uncertain. As the season progresses, the show reveals more about her history and why her return causes such immediate friction.

Heidi Grace Engerman as Sidney
Sidney first appears at the end of Season 1 as a mysterious woman connected to Yancy. Season 2 reveals the full complication: she is his legal wife, and their marriage began during one of his former cons.
Sidney refuses to give Yancy an easy divorce and attempts to claim a stake in Fuller Ranch. Her demands collide with Yancy’s relationship with Ellie and his effort to establish a new identity.

Names and character details often reported incorrectly
- Cap’s full name is Cap Fuller. He owns Fuller Ranch; “Cap” is his nickname.
- Ellie’s surname is Estevez. Some early coverage incorrectly identified her as Ellie Catawnee.
- The sheriff is Dan Brigman, played by Philip Winchester. “Phillip Winchester” is a common misspelling of the actor’s name.
- Yancy becomes more than a ranch hand. After Cap’s death, he inherits Fuller Ranch.
- The ranch story has three principal properties. The Double K, Bar W and Fuller Ranches—not one single family ranch—drive the land conflict.

The Bottom Line
The cast of Ransom Canyon is organised around competing claims to land and belonging. Staten, Davis and Cap represent the established ranch owners; Yancy becomes the unexpected new owner; and the younger characters inherit conflicts created by their parents. Around them, Quinn’s return, Ellie’s relationship with Yancy, Sam’s challenge to the Double K and the investigation into Randall’s death keep the town’s personal and property disputes closely connected.
