That preserves the way the franchise introduced the Warrens, Annabelle, and Valak, and it avoids revealing connections that later prequels were designed to make meaningful. If you are revisiting the series, the chronological order below follows the films’ principal story settings from 1952 to 1986.
There is one important qualification: the commonly used “10 Conjuring movies” list contains nine films in the official theatrical Conjuring Universe plus The Curse of La Llorona, which is usually treated as an adjacent, non-canon entry. The guide below includes all 10 requested films, but labels that distinction clearly.
Are there 10 official Conjuring movies?
Not exactly. The broad fan-and-guide list has 10 feature films:
- Four mainline The Conjuring films
- Three Annabelle films
- Two The Nun films
- The Curse of La Llorona
However, The Curse of La Llorona is not generally counted as part of the official Conjuring Universe. Producer Peter Safran has said it is not part of the universe, and director Michael Chaves has explained that its connection to the franchise was encouraged by an Annabelle-related element and a presentation mistake. Its Father Perez connection and an Annabelle Easter egg make it easy to associate with the series, but those links do not establish official canon.

That leaves nine official theatrical Conjuring Universe films through The Conjuring: Last Rites. Warner Bros.-partnered retrospective programming in 2025 listed the eight earlier official films and then followed them with Last Rites; it omitted La Llorona.
Chronological order: all 10 movies by story setting
This is a practical chronology based on each movie’s principal narrative period, not a scene-by-scene timeline. Several entries use flashbacks, framing sequences, prologues, or later connective material. The years below should therefore be read as “primarily set in,” not as claims that every scene takes place in one year.
-
The Nun (2018) — primarily 1952
Set mainly at a remote abbey in Romania, The Nun follows Sister Irene and Father Burke as they investigate a disturbing death and confront the demonic entity Valak in the form of a nun. The film establishes Valak’s earlier place in the story chronology, even though audiences first encountered the character in The Conjuring 2.

-
Annabelle: Creation (2017) — beginning in the 1940s and continuing through the 1950s
This prequel supplies the closest thing the franchise has to an origin story for the Annabelle mythology. Its timeline begins with a 1943 accident and moves through later decades before focusing on the events that lead toward the possessed doll seen in Annabelle.
Because the movie spans multiple time points, its placement is best understood as “before Annabelle,” rather than as a story occurring entirely in one precise year.
-
The Nun II (2023) — primarily 1956
Four years after The Nun, Sister Irene is drawn into another investigation involving Valak. The principal story moves to France in 1956, making this the next major chapter in the franchise’s Valak chronology.

Annabelle (2014) — 1967
Set in California, Annabelle follows a young doctor and his wife after the vintage doll enters their home. What begins as a gift becomes the center of a supernatural threat, connecting the film to the artifact briefly seen in the opening of The Conjuring.
-
The Conjuring (2013) — primarily 1971
Ed and Lorraine Warren investigate the Perron family’s increasingly frightening experiences at their Rhode Island farmhouse. The main case takes place in 1971, although the film opens with earlier Warren and Annabelle material.
Rank #2
Chronologically, the opening does not move the entire film out of 1971; it is better treated as a prologue before the principal Perron case.
-
Annabelle Comes Home (2019) — generally 1972
Set largely in the Warren home, this installment begins when Judy Warren and her babysitter are left near the family’s locked artifact room. Annabelle becomes the catalyst for a night in which several dangerous objects appear to come alive.

-
The Curse of La Llorona (2019) — 1973; adjacent, not official canon
This story of a mother trying to protect her children from the Mexican folklore figure La Llorona is commonly inserted here because it includes Father Perez and an Annabelle-related reference. Its 1973 setting places it between Annabelle Comes Home and The Conjuring 2 in the broad viewing list.
For a strict Conjuring Universe marathon, skip it. For a complete 10-title franchise-adjacent marathon, watch it here and label it as non-canon or adjacent rather than treating it as an official ninth or tenth universe entry.
-
The Conjuring 2 (2016) — primarily 1977
The Warrens travel to Enfield, England, to investigate the case involving the Hodgson family. The main haunting occurs in 1977, but the movie opens with an Amityville sequence set in 1976.

-
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021) — approximately 1980–1981
The third mainline film follows the Warrens as they investigate the case associated with Arne Cheyenne Johnson. It shifts the series away from a single haunted-house structure and toward a broader investigation involving possession, murder, and occult forces.
Its setting is generally placed around 1980 and 1981. As with the other films, this is a fictionalized horror story inspired by reported cases, not independent verification that the supernatural events occurred as depicted.

The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025) — primarily 1986
The most recent released film is principally set in 1986 and centers on the Smurl haunting, with an earlier sequence that reaches back before the main events. It continues the Warren storyline and is the latest entry in the official theatrical film chronology covered here.

Release order: all 10 movies by U.S. theatrical release date
Release order is the best choice for newcomers because it preserves the franchise’s original reveals and escalation. Here is the broad 10-film order, including La Llorona for completeness:
| # | Film | U.S. release date | Universe status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Conjuring | July 19, 2013 | Official |
| 2 | Annabelle | October 3, 2014 | Official |
| 3 | The Conjuring 2 | June 10, 2016 | Official |
| 4 | Annabelle: Creation | August 11, 2017 | Official |
| 5 | The Nun | September 7, 2018 | Official |
| 6 | The Curse of La Llorona | April 19, 2019 | Adjacent/non-canon |
| 7 | Annabelle Comes Home | June 26, 2019 | Official |
| 8 | The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It | June 4, 2021 | Official |
| 9 | The Nun II | September 8, 2023 | Official |
| 10 | The Conjuring: Last Rites | September 5, 2025 | Official |
The dates above are U.S. theatrical dates. International release dates may differ.
Which order should you choose?
Choose release order if you are watching for the first time
Start with The Conjuring, then follow the release-date table. This is the cleanest introduction to the franchise because:
- The Warrens are introduced before their later family history and investigations expand.
- Annabelle’s importance develops through the order in which audiences originally discovered it.
- Valak is first presented in The Conjuring 2, before the prequels explain more about the character’s earlier appearances.
- Later connective material remains a discovery rather than a foregone conclusion.
For a strict-canon first watch, simply omit The Curse of La Llorona from the release list. The official sequence then has nine films.
Choose chronological order for a rewatch
The timeline order is useful if you want the supernatural history to move forward from the 1950s to the 1980s. It places Valak’s stories first, follows Annabelle’s earlier mythology, and ends with the latest Warren case.
It is less ideal for a first viewing because prequels can assume that you already recognize objects, characters, or entities from the earlier-released movies. Chronology also cannot eliminate every time jump: Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, and several other entries contain material from more than one period.
Choose the 10-film list if you want franchise-adjacent completeness
Include The Curse of La Llorona if your goal is to see every movie commonly marketed or discussed alongside the Conjuring films. Just keep the label clear: it is a related title in the popular viewing list, not one of the nine official theatrical universe films.

Where does Last Rites fit now?
The Conjuring: Last Rites is not an unreleased future film. It received its North American theatrical release on September 5, 2025, making it the newest released movie in this guide. Its primary story period, around 1986, also places it last in the practical chronological order.
Warner Bros. announced an HBO Max debut on November 21, 2025. That date establishes a U.S. streaming milestone, not a permanent worldwide availability guarantee. Before publishing a “where to watch” box, check the reader’s country, the current service catalog, and whether the title is included with a subscription or offered only as a digital rental or purchase.
What is not included?
This list covers the 10 feature films in the broad Conjuring viewing guide. It does not include Insidious, other films merely associated with the same actors or producers, fan-made shorts, comics, or a planned television series. Those are separate from the 10-film feature-film count.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe movies draw on reported paranormal cases, folklore, and characters associated with the Warrens, but they are fictionalized horror productions. A film’s depiction of a case should not be presented as independent proof that the supernatural events happened as shown.
