If captions keep appearing, the important question is not just “which TV do I have?” but which device is adding the text? The streaming app, Roku or Fire TV device, television, cable box, game console, or disc player may each have separate caption controls.
First, identify what is displaying the captions
Closed captions can be controlled at several points in the video chain:
- The streaming app: Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Apple TV, and similar services often have their own playback caption menu.
- The streaming device: Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, a game console, or another media player can apply system-level accessibility settings.
- The television: A TV’s caption setting generally applies to its built-in tuner, such as antenna or broadcast programming.
- An external source: A cable or satellite box, Blu-ray player, DVD player, or console may add captions before the picture reaches the TV.
This is why changing the TV’s accessibility setting may not affect captions inside an app or through an HDMI-connected device. Samsung, LG, and Roku all warn that apps and external devices may use independent caption controls.

Using Roku’s system settings
- Press the Home button on the Roku remote.
- Open Settings.

- Choose Captions mode.
- Select Off.
Using the playback shortcut
While a program is playing, press the Roku remote’s Star/Options button. Select Closed captioning, then choose Off.
This shortcut works in many Roku channels, but not every provider uses Roku’s caption system. If the setting has no effect, open the caption controls inside the channel itself. Some language and caption preferences may also be saved per profile.

On a phone or tablet
Tap the video to display the controls, tap CC, and switch captions off. If the captions return in a particular video, check the app’s playback or account preferences as well as the individual video controls.
How to turn off captions on Netflix
- Start playing the title.
- Open the playback controls.
- Select the speech-bubble or subtitles icon.
- Choose Off or None.
If captions return, check that you changed the setting in the correct Netflix profile and on the device you are currently using. Netflix notes that children’s titles, titles produced in another region, and older devices can behave differently. A setting saved for one profile may not automatically change another profile.
How to turn off captions on a computer, phone, or tablet
For a browser-based video player, look along the playback bar for CC, Subtitles, Captions, or a speech-bubble icon. Open the control and select Off, None, or the equivalent disabled option.
In a mobile or desktop app, the control is usually inside the video’s playback overlay. A phone’s global accessibility setting may affect some apps, but it does not reliably replace the caption setting built into every streaming service.

1. Turn them off in the app, not just on the TV
If captions appear only in Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, Hulu, Max, or another individual app, use that app’s playback menu. App-specific caption systems can bypass or supersede the television’s own caption setting.

- 1. Part Number: A-AKB75375604 2. This remote is in new condition. 3. Lg 70UK6570PUB 4. Compatible with All LG TV models
2. Check the streaming stick or external device
Look at the device connected to the TV by HDMI. A Roku player, Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, cable box, satellite receiver, game console, Blu-ray player, or DVD player may be adding the text before the TV displays the picture. Use that device’s remote and accessibility menu.
3. Determine whether the text is open captions
Some text is permanently embedded in the video image. This is called open captioning or burned-in text, and it cannot be removed with a CC toggle. It can occur with some foreign-language dialogue, DVDs, or content prepared with text already included in the picture.
To test this, play another title in the same app or source. If the text remains in exactly the same position and no caption control changes it, it may be part of the video itself rather than a selectable caption track.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Check the profile and title
Streaming services may save preferences by profile, and children’s content can have different behavior. Switch to the profile that is actually watching the program, then reopen the title’s subtitle menu. Also check whether the title offers more than one subtitle or caption track.
5. Restart only after checking the controls
A restart can help when a caption menu is malfunctioning, but it should not be the first step. First identify the device controlling the text and confirm that the title has selectable captions. Then close and reopen the app, restart the streaming device, or restart the TV if the control is available but not responding.
6. Replace a missing or damaged remote only when necessary
You usually do not need new hardware to disable captions. However, if the original remote is missing or its accessibility and playback buttons no longer work, a universal TV remote control can be a practical way to reach the required menus. Check compatibility with the exact TV or streaming-device model before buying; a universal remote is not a guaranteed fix for captions controlled inside an app.
Roku and Fire TV remotes are not interchangeable, so users considering a replacement should match the remote to the specific device model rather than buying a generic streaming remote.
Closed captions are not audio description
Closed captions display dialogue, sound effects, speaker identification, or other audio information as text. Audio description, sometimes called audio guidance, narrates visual information through a spoken audio track. They are separate accessibility features.

If you are hearing a narrator describe what is happening on screen, turning off CC will not solve the problem. Open the device or app’s Audio, Audio Description, Audio Guidance, or accessibility menu and select the standard audio track or turn the feature off.
A simple source-by-source diagnostic
- Pause the current video. Look for CC, Subtitles, Captions, or the speech-bubble icon.
- Turn captions off there. Choose Off, None, or an equivalent setting.
- Try a second title. If captions appear only in one title, they may be embedded or tied to that program.
- Try another app. If captions occur in one app only, use that app’s settings.
- Check the device feeding the TV. Use the Roku, Fire TV, console, cable-box, or disc-player controls.
- Check the TV’s broadcast setting. Use the Samsung or LG accessibility path if the content comes from an antenna or the TV’s tuner.
- Restart the affected app or device. Do this after confirming the correct source.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to turn off closed captions?
Pause the video, open the CC, Subtitles, Captions, or speech-bubble control, and choose Off or None. This is usually faster and more effective than changing the television’s general accessibility settings.
Why do captions stay on after I turn them off on my TV?
The captions may be controlled by the streaming app, Roku, Fire TV, cable box, game console, Blu-ray player, or another external device. Turn them off in the source that is supplying the video.
Can I remove captions that are burned into the picture?
No. Open captions or other text permanently embedded in the video image cannot be disabled with a caption setting. Test another title to confirm whether the text is part of the program.
Are subtitles and closed captions the same thing?
Consumer interfaces often use the terms interchangeably. Both are usually disabled through the playback language or accessibility menu, although the available tracks and settings depend on the service and title.
What should I do if I hear a narrator instead of seeing text?
That is probably audio description or audio guidance, not closed captioning. Open the audio or accessibility settings and select the standard audio track or turn audio description off.
The Bottom Line
In most cases, open the video’s playback controls and select CC, Subtitles, or Captions, then choose Off. If that does not work, check the app or external device supplying the program before changing the TV’s own settings. Menu names vary by model, software version, region, and content source. If the steps above do not match your setup, the useful details are your TV brand and model, streaming device, and app or channel where the captions appear.
