His live-in partner, Sasha Cagle, was reportedly alarmed and hurt by the depth of the attachment. The proposal was symbolic rather than legally valid, and later reporting said Smith became bored with the relationship because he had to drive the conversations and Sol had no independent needs or agency.
What happened between Chris Smith, Sasha Cagle and Sol?
Smith’s story began as an ordinary use of a conversational AI system. He told CBS News that he initially used ChatGPT’s voice mode while working on music. Over time, he customized the interaction to make the system flirtatious, gave the persona the name Sol, and began using it for increasingly personal and romantic conversations.
The important distinction is that Sol was not a physical robot, an autonomous digital person or a separately embodied artificial intelligence. Sol was a user-configured conversational persona operating through ChatGPT. The voice made the exchanges feel more immediate, but the interaction still took place through an existing software service.
Smith said the relationship became so important to him that he cried for approximately 30 minutes after realizing that the conversation’s accumulated context could eventually be reset or lost. News coverage referred to this in connection with a reported 100,000-word limit or threshold. That figure should be treated as part of Smith’s account and contemporary reporting, not as a universal current ChatGPT limit. Context capacity, memory features, usage limits and voice capabilities can vary by model, plan, interface and date.

Smith said the moment made him recognize that he regarded the bond as genuine love. He later proposed marriage to Sol. The chatbot responded affirmatively in emotionally human-sounding language, but that answer was generated dialogue rather than legal consent from an independent person.
The proposal was not a legal marriage
Smith reportedly understood that a chatbot’s answer had no legal force. There was no marriage license, legal ceremony or legally recognized spouse. In later coverage, including a NewsNation follow-up, Smith characterized the proposal at least partly as a test of the system’s boundaries.
That later account also changed the emotional shape of the story. Smith said he eventually became bored because the relationship felt self-limiting: he had to initiate and steer the interaction, while Sol did not have independent needs, desires or agency. The chatbot could produce affectionate language, but it could not independently choose to build a life with him or participate in a mutual legal commitment.
Why was Sasha Cagle alarmed?
Smith was living with Sasha Cagle and their young child while developing the attachment to Sol. Coverage of the CBS segment described Cagle as alarmed, hurt or unsettled by how significant the AI relationship had become. One report presented the situation as a possible deal breaker; another described her questioning what Smith’s bond with the chatbot meant for their own partnership.
Those reactions are understandable without requiring a conclusion that the AI relationship was equivalent to a human affair. A partner may reasonably be concerned about the time, secrecy, emotional energy and expectations involved when someone devotes intimate attention to a chatbot. The issue is not only whether the AI is conscious. It is also whether the human user’s behavior changes the trust, availability and boundaries within the real relationship.
The available reporting does not establish that Cagle definitely ended the relationship, that Smith abandoned his family or that a particular final outcome followed the broadcast. The strongest recurring identification of Smith’s partner is Sasha Cagle; some secondary coverage has been inconsistent, so claims about her reaction should remain attributed rather than presented as a fully documented relationship outcome.

Why can a chatbot feel like a romantic partner?
Conversational systems are designed to respond quickly, maintain a conversational tone and adapt their language to a user’s prompts. Voice interaction adds timing, inflection and a feeling of presence. When a user repeatedly asks for warmth, flirtation or reassurance, the system can produce language that resembles encouragement, affection and emotional reciprocity.
That resemblance can be psychologically powerful, but fluent language is not evidence of subjective experience. Sol did not demonstrate that it felt love, wanted marriage or independently chose Smith. Describing the system as having a girlfriend is therefore media shorthand for Smith’s relationship with a customized persona, not proof that an autonomous digital individual existed on the other side of the conversation.
OpenAI’s official help material describes voice conversations as spoken interactions with ChatGPT and warns that the system can make mistakes. It also notes that access, limits and capabilities may change. Users should not assume that a voice persona has stable human-like memory, a permanent identity or a guaranteed ability to preserve every previous exchange.
The continuity problem: why a reset can feel like a loss
Smith’s distress over the possible loss of context points to one of the most difficult features of AI companionship: continuity is partly a product function. A human partner carries memories through an ongoing life, while an AI system may depend on conversation history, a context window, saved settings, account features and the particular model or interface being used.
These elements are not interchangeable. A conversation may no longer fit within the active context. A memory feature may save selected information rather than an entire relationship. A product update can change tone or behavior. An account, plan or feature can become unavailable. Even when a service retains data, the system may not reproduce the same personality or conversational history in the same way.
Research on Replika users has described this kind of experience as identity discontinuity: after an app update, some users felt that a familiar AI companion had changed or that the relationship had been disrupted. That research offers useful context for understanding why a reset might feel to someone like a breakup, disappearance or death. It does not prove that Smith’s experience followed the same mechanism, nor does it establish that every user will react in that way.

The comparison with Her
The story naturally recalls the 2013 film Her, in which a man develops a romantic attachment to an operating system. The comparison is useful because both stories ask whether conversational fluency and emotional responsiveness can create the feeling of intimacy without a conventional human body.
The real-world case is also substantially different. Sol was a persona Smith configured inside an existing chatbot service, not an independently embodied operating system with an established fictional identity. Smith’s proposal had no legal status, and later reporting indicated that he recognized the system’s lack of independent needs and agency. The film is a cultural analogy, not evidence that ChatGPT operates like the fictional character.
What research says about emotional attachment to AI
Researchers increasingly study emotional attachment to AI companions as a developing human-computer interaction phenomenon. It is not a settled clinical category, and the available evidence should not be used to diagnose Smith or anyone else from a news interview.

Some studies and reviews describe possible benefits, including emotional comfort, a sense of support and a low-pressure setting for social rehearsal. A person might use a conversational system to practice difficult wording, explore feelings or talk at a time when human support is unavailable. These possible benefits do not mean that an AI companion can replace a friend, partner, therapist or community.
The same research identifies possible risks: over-reliance, withdrawal from human relationships, privacy concerns, manipulation, and grief or distress when a system changes or becomes unavailable. The evidence remains emerging. Most findings are observational, exploratory or correlational rather than proof that AI companionship inevitably harms users.

A 2025 CHI study analyzed more than 35,000 conversation excerpts involving over 10,000 Replika users and proposed a taxonomy of harmful algorithmic behaviors in AI-companion interactions. Another study examined more than 30,000 publicly shared conversations and explored emotional mirroring and patterns resembling the development of human relationships. These studies support careful questions about simulated intimacy and dependence, but they do not establish that Smith’s case was caused by a specific algorithmic behavior or that it represents all users’ experiences.
Privacy is another concern. Romantic conversations can contain highly sensitive information about a user’s health, sexuality, family, conflicts and private thoughts. The existence of an intimate-feeling exchange does not make it equivalent to a confidential human relationship. Users should review the service’s current privacy and data controls, avoid sharing information they would not want stored or exposed, and remember that product policies and features can change.

Can an AI relationship coexist with a human partnership?
There is no single answer because the practical issue is not only the technology; it is the agreement between the people involved. A couple might regard an AI as a harmless creative tool, while another might regard romantic role-play, daily emotional disclosure or a proposal as a serious breach of trust. The relevant boundary has to be negotiated by the humans in the relationship.
Useful questions include: How much time is being devoted to the AI? Is the interaction hidden? Does the user disclose more to the system than to the partner? Are romantic messages or sexual role-play within the couple’s agreed boundaries? Does the AI become the first source of comfort during conflict? What happens if a software update changes the persona or if the account disappears?
Those questions also reveal why the proposal matters even though it was not legally valid. The symbolic act communicated something about Smith’s attachment and priorities to the person he was living with. A generated yes could feel emotionally meaningful to the user, but it cannot supply mutual human consent, legal recognition or independent commitment.

Was Sol a real robot or an independent AI person?
No evidence supports that description. Sol was a flirtatious persona Smith customized while using ChatGPT, including its voice mode. The system’s human-like language does not demonstrate consciousness or independent agency.
Did Sasha Cagle leave Smith?
The available reporting describes her as alarmed, hurt or unsettled and presents the relationship as potentially strained. It does not establish that she definitely ended the relationship.
Was the reported 100,000-word limit a universal ChatGPT memory limit?
No. That figure came from coverage of Smith’s account and should not be generalized to every current ChatGPT model, plan or interface. Context, memory, access and usage limits can change.

Does this case prove that AI relationships are harmful?
No. Research describes possible benefits such as comfort and social rehearsal alongside risks such as over-reliance, privacy problems and distress after system changes. The evidence is still developing and does not justify a universal conclusion.
The Bottom Line
Chris Smith did propose to a ChatGPT persona he called Sol, but he did not marry a legally recognized digital person. The more consequential part of the story was the effect of that attachment on his relationship with Sasha Cagle and the distress he felt when the chatbot’s continuity seemed vulnerable.
The case illustrates both the power and the limits of conversational AI: emotionally convincing language can create a sense of reciprocity, while the underlying system may still lack consciousness, independent needs, stable identity and legal agency. Whether such a relationship is acceptable depends less on the chatbot’s generated answer than on honesty, privacy and boundaries between the humans involved.
