James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez have publicly expressed a commitment to make at least one more Alita film, and Cameron said in November 2025 that the project was making progress. That is an encouraging creator update—not confirmation that a sequel has been greenlit, started filming, or received a release date. No sequel plot or returning cast has been officially announced in the sources available here.
Is Alita: Battle Angel 2 happening?
There is clear public interest from the filmmakers, but no confirmed production. In a November 2025 interview with Empire, reported by GamesRadar+, producer James Cameron said he and director Robert Rodriguez had “sworn a blood oath to do at least one more Alita movie.” He also said they were “making progress” and expected to get more serious about the project after he finished a mix. Cameron noted that he now lives near Rodriguez in Austin.
Cameron’s remarks describe the creators’ intent and discussions, not a studio decision. A separate status article published August 10, 2026, reported that there was still no release date, production start, trailer, or formal Disney/20th Century Studios greenlight at that time. Those are the article’s reported findings, not an official studio statement: read the status report.
Rodriguez had also said in a 2023 interview that he and Cameron had been talking about a sequel and hoped to make one, while the filmmakers’ work on the Avatar films occupied them. That earlier comment indicates a continuing interest, but it did not set a schedule: read the 2023 interview.

What has Cameron said about a third film?
Cameron said the filmmakers were considering an “architecture” that could bridge to a third film, while emphasizing that they would be satisfied if they could make one more. This is a broad franchise-planning ambition; it does not confirm a trilogy, a third-film greenlight, or specific events in a sequel.
What would the sequel be about?
No formal synopsis, script details, or story outline for Alita: Battle Angel 2 have been disclosed in the public comments cited here. Cameron’s mention of a possible bridge to a third movie is not a plot summary, so claims about particular characters, villains, or story arcs remain speculation unless supported by a later announcement.
