Alien: Romulus is a horror-forward interquel set between Alien and Aliens. Fede Alvarez gives the series a younger cast, a derelict space station and a strong emphasis on physical, close-quarters terror. The result is most compelling when its practical craft and tense set pieces take the lead; its familiar franchise callbacks can sometimes leave less room for the new characters to develop.
Where does Alien: Romulus fit in the timeline?
Released August 16, 2024, Alien: Romulus takes place after Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979) and before James Cameron’s Aliens (1986). It is not a remake of the first film. Instead, it tells a new story in the gap between those two movies, using the franchise’s established world and imagery while following a different group of people.
The setup is direct: Rain, played by Cailee Spaeny, hopes to escape a mining colony with Andy, the synthetic she regards as a sibling. They join a young crew boarding an abandoned vessel with cryogenic capability. What begins as a chance to leave becomes a fight to survive the alien life form aboard.
The colony’s laborers are indentured to Weyland-Yutani, keeping the company’s exploitation of people and pursuit of profit in view alongside the creature threat. That corporate thread connects the film to the franchise without requiring a newcomer to know every installment.

Does Alvarez bring the series back to horror?
Alvarez has described his aim as returning to the early franchise’s horror simplicity. “The whole point of this movie was to take back Alien to the simplicity of the beginning of the franchise, where it was, above all things, a horror movie,” he told Disney’s D23. He also characterized the film as a horror thriller at its core in an Associated Press interview.
That intention shapes the film’s appeal: danger feels immediate, the setting is claustrophobic, and the abandoned ship turns exploration into exposure. The emphasis is on the vulnerability of a small crew in a hostile environment rather than on making the alien threat feel like a distant spectacle. It is a return toward horror, not a claim that the film simply reproduces the first movie’s approach.
For viewers comparing it with the first two films, the useful distinction is horror versus action. Romulus leans toward the first film’s confined-space dread, while its later franchise setting inevitably brings a larger history of alien encounters with it. Alvarez called it “a return to form”; that is his stated ambition, not a universal verdict.

How practical are the effects?
The film combines practical sets, animatronics and spaceship miniatures with computer-generated effects. Alvarez said the production built around those physical elements and combined them with work from visual-effects companies including Industrial Light & Magic and Wētā. So the accurate answer is both: Romulus uses tangible craft as a major part of its look, but it is not an all-practical-effects production.
That mix matters to the film’s horror. Physical environments and creatures can give actors something concrete to react to, while digital work supports images and effects that practical methods alone cannot provide. D23’s account of the production describes the same blended approach rather than a choice between old and new techniques.
Do the callbacks help or overwhelm the new story?
Familiar franchise imagery is central to Romulus’s identity. For established fans, callbacks can make the film feel connected to the series’ original nightmares; for other viewers, some may register as reminders of earlier films rather than discoveries belonging to Rain and her crew.

BFI reviewer Roger Luckhurst describes the approach as back-to-basics and a return to form, while also pointing to thin character setup and familiar callbacks that do not always land smoothly. That tension is the film’s clearest trade-off: momentum and recognizable iconography can sustain the ride, but they may crowd out the slower work of making every new crew member distinctive.
The film is therefore neither best understood as a standalone retelling with no relationship to the franchise nor as a story that depends entirely on prior knowledge. Its plot centers on new characters, but the experience draws much of its texture from a legacy viewers may recognize.
What is notable about Ian Holm’s return?
The film digitally recreates the likeness of Ian Holm, who played the synthetic Ash in Alien, for a returning synthetic character. This is a notable production choice as well as a point of discussion about using digital likenesses. Luckhurst found the recreated performance visually shaky, a reminder that a technical callback can be conspicuous even when it is intended to deepen continuity.

Its effectiveness is a matter of how a viewer weighs recognition against the limits of the recreation. The choice may resonate as a link to the original film, but it also raises questions about whether a digitally recreated likeness adds enough to justify the attention it draws.

Is Alien: Romulus worth watching?
It is a strong fit for viewers who want a tense, tactile science-fiction horror film and enjoy seeing how a new story uses an established cinematic world. Its clearest strengths are its horror-first intent and the practical craft supporting its spaces and creatures. Its main limitation is that callbacks and brisk franchise momentum sometimes take precedence over fuller character development.
Newcomers can follow the central survival story without treating the film as a remake or needing to have seen every sequel. Viewers most concerned with the series’ legacy, however, may find the references more rewarding than those looking for a wholly fresh direction.
