The visual framed a two-song sequence that moved from “If I Ain’t Got You” to her Grammy-winning reunion with Usher on “My Boo.”
Alicia Keys made one of the most instantly recognizable entrances of Super Bowl LVIII: seated at a bright red piano, wearing a crystal-covered red Dolce & Gabbana look, with a vast red silk cape appearing to fly around her. The color was not a single costume choice. It was a complete stage tableau, built around Keys’ surprise appearance in Usher’s Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show.
The performance took place on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Usher was the announced halftime headliner; Keys joined him as a surprise guest and turned a short appearance into a carefully staged reunion with a strong musical and visual identity.
Alicia Keys’ two-song Super Bowl appearance
Keys began alone with “If I Ain’t Got You,” the ballad from her 2003 album The Diary of Alicia Keys. The song immediately placed her at the center of the moment rather than treating her as a brief celebrity cameo. She was framed at the red piano, allowing the performance to begin with her voice, piano playing and familiar songwriting.

Usher then joined her for “My Boo,” their 2004 duet associated with his Confessions era. The transition changed the mood from a solo piano ballad to a nostalgic R&B reunion. It also gave the appearance a history that extended well beyond the halftime stage: Usher and Keys won the 2005 Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for “My Boo.”
That context explains why the guest appearance landed as more than a surprise entrance. Keys was performing one of her signature songs and then reuniting with Usher around a Grammy-winning collaboration that audiences already knew.
Why the red look became the performance’s defining image
The red styling was unusually integrated. Fashion coverage identified Keys’ outfit as a Dolce & Gabbana catsuit covered in Swarovski crystals, paired with an organza cape. The piano beside her was finished in a matching candy-apple red. Together, the clothing, instrument and fabric created a single visual object rather than three unrelated elements.
That unity mattered during a halftime show built around rapid changes in performers, costumes and staging. Against the larger production, Keys’ entrance could be read immediately: red piano, red crystal-covered costume and red fabric, all emphasizing the contrast between her solo opening and the surrounding spectacle.

The flowing red fabric appeared to move as though it were caught in powerful wind. Behind the effect was a coordinated piece of theatrical engineering. Production reporting identified the piano as a purpose-built instrument created by ShowFX and the red silk cape as an element made by Michael Curry’s team.

Puppeteers moved the silk during the performance. Keys’ own behind-the-scenes material also referred to the puppeteers and the rehearsals required to make the effect work. Later descriptions attributed to Keys explained that puppeteers were positioned beneath or around the dress effect so the fabric could appear to lift and fly.
The result depended on more than the performer’s movement. Keys had to sing and play while remaining visually coordinated with the piano, fabric handlers and cameras. The effect also had to read correctly from a stadium-scale distance and through the broadcast’s camera angles. The exact crew size and rehearsal timetable have not been publicly established in the available reporting, so it is more accurate to describe the moment as a puppeteer-assisted theatrical effect than to assign it unsupported production numbers.
The musical connection to The Diary of Alicia Keys
“If I Ain’t Got You” connected the Super Bowl performance to the period that established Keys as a major singer-songwriter and pianist. The song appears on her 2003 album The Diary of Alicia Keys, placing the halftime rendition within the catalog that first introduced the track to listeners.
For listeners who want to revisit that original album era, The Diary of Alicia Keys CD contains “If I Ain’t Got You.” It is worth distinguishing that catalog release from the Super Bowl performance: the CD is the studio album, not a recording of Keys’ 2024 halftime appearance.
More Myself: A Journey, Keys’ memoir written with Michelle Burford, offers a broader autobiographical route into her career and self-discovery. It is relevant background for readers interested in the artist beyond this single performance, but it is not a companion recording or a piece of the Super Bowl staging.
Why “My Boo” gave the cameo its emotional payoff
“If I Ain’t Got You” made the opening personal and piano-led. “My Boo” supplied the reunion. The song’s 2004 release and 2005 Grammy win gave Usher and Keys a shared musical landmark that audiences could recognize without explanation.
The pairing also balanced the artists’ roles. Keys did not simply appear to decorate Usher’s set; she introduced her own signature ballad before joining him on a song they had recorded together. The sequence therefore moved from individual identity to shared history, with the visual red tableau carrying through both parts.

The reported vocal-edit controversy
After the show, online viewers debated whether a brief vocal slip heard in the live presentation had been softened in a later official upload. Entertainment reporting treated the difference as a possible post-production edit, but the underlying production details were not publicly documented.
The careful conclusion is that viewers reported and debated a possible alteration; it should not be presented as an officially confirmed account of what happened in the live broadcast or during the upload process. The controversy became part of the performance’s online afterlife, but it does not change the larger production achievement: the appearance was built around live vocals, piano, choreography, scenic design and a fabric effect that had to be executed in real time.

- A complete visual concept: The Dolce & Gabbana crystal-covered red look, red piano and red silk were designed to function as one image.
- A recognizable opening song: “If I Ain’t Got You” gave Keys a meaningful solo entrance tied to her 2003 album.
- A historically resonant duet: “My Boo” reunited Keys and Usher on their Grammy-winning 2004 collaboration.
- Visible theatrical mechanics: Puppeteers helped make the cape appear to fly, turning the fabric into an active part of the performance.
- Production at broadcast scale: The effect required coordination among Keys, the piano builders, costume and scenic designers, puppeteers, camera operators and the wider halftime team.
A licensed replay or official performance video is the natural way to revisit the moment, but availability can vary by country, platform and licensing window. Viewers should confirm that any current stream is authorized and available in their region rather than relying on an old replay link.
Alicia Keys’ red Super Bowl appearance worked because its musical structure and visual design reinforced each other. She arrived with a song that belonged to her own catalog, moved into a celebrated duet with Usher, and did so from inside a purpose-built red world whose most spectacular element was operated by puppeteers. The result was brief, but it was neither random nor minimal: it was a tightly coordinated performance designed to be remembered in a single color.
