Alicia Keys shared a personal mirror-acceptance practice: look at yourself in the mirror, preferably naked, for at least seven minutes and gradually work toward eleven. Those timings were Keys’s suggestion, not a clinically established prescription. In a June 2021 Shape report, clinical psychologist Terri Bacow described a shorter, flexible approach to mirror work.
What Alicia Keys said about the ritual
In an Instagram video described by Shape on June 15, 2021, Keys invited people to look at their bodies in a mirror without judging themselves. She said to “look at yourself in the mirror, preferably be naked, for at least seven minutes, to build your way up to eleven minutes of completely looking [at] and taking in you.”
Keys also invited followers to try the practice daily for 21 days and included “I Am the Light of the Soul” by Gurudass Kaur. The song and the 21-day invitation were elements of her personal routine, not requirements for mirror acceptance or evidence of a treatment schedule.
What mirror acceptance means
Shape framed the practice as “mirror exposure” or “mirror acceptance.” Bacow, a clinical psychologist quoted in the article, described it as looking at the face or body and describing it in neutral terms. The focus is on form or function rather than deciding whether a feature is attractive.

For example, a neutral description might note that shoulders are level or that legs bend at the knees. That differs from evaluating a feature as good, bad, or needing correction. The aim in this description is observation without aesthetic judgment, not forcing yourself to feel positive about every part of your appearance.

Keys’s timing and the expert’s advice differ
Keys described starting at seven minutes and building toward eleven. Bacow, speaking to Shape about making a morning ritual realistic, suggested starting with two or three minutes and said, “The max I would advise is five minutes. A good morning ritual like this one needs to be realistic and flexible.” These are different recommendations from different people; the article does not establish a universal duration.

Shape noted that looking at your body in a mirror can feel uncomfortable, overwhelming, or emotional, particularly if you are struggling with body image. You do not have to be naked, follow Keys’s timings, use music, or continue if the exercise feels distressing. A mirror is the only physical item directly involved in the reported practice; any mirror you already have is sufficient.
