Alibaba Aani Chalishitle Chor turns a party mystery into a comedy about marriage, desire and friendship. In Nandini Ramnath’s assessment for Scroll, its lively dialogue and entertaining premise are offset by a slack middle and a treatment of infidelity that does not fully reckon with its consequences.
What happens in Alibaba Aani Chalishitle Chor?
Directed by Aditya Ingale, the 2024 Marathi film adapts Vivek Bele’s play of the same name. Its gathering brings together seven longtime friends in their forties: three married couples and one single man. During a blackout, the group hears a kiss followed by a slap. The friends then try to work out who kissed whom—and who delivered the slap.
The incident becomes more than a puzzle. It brings the group’s claims of platonic friendship, marital trust and sexual desire into question. The immediate question is, “Was it consensual?” The broader one is “can men and women ever be friends or does sex always enter the picture”.
How the relationships shape the mystery
Ramnath’s review points to several tensions within the group. Parag (Subodh Bhave) is married to Aditi (Shruti Marathe), while single Abhishek (Umesh Kamat) adds pressure to their relationship. Sumitra (Mukta Barve) is closer to Varun (Anand Ingale) than to her husband (Atul Parchure). Varun, a physics professor who invents theories to explain the mystery, is married to Shalaka (Madhura Welankar-Satam).

These connections give the blackout its comic and dramatic potential: every explanation can be shaped by the friends’ loyalties, suspicions and self-interest. The question is not only what happened in the dark, but what the group’s reactions reveal about the relationships already in view.
What works—and where the film loses force
Ramnath praises Bele’s lively dialogue and the cast, and finds the mystery entertaining. In her reading, the film is sharpest when it exposes the self-serving hypocrisy of middle-class morality. Its setup gives the characters room to debate fidelity and friendship while trying to preserve their own reputations.

The limitation, in the review’s view, is that the film raises consequential questions about infidelity, long-term relationships and sexual desire without fully examining what follows from them. Ramnath calls it “lightweight movie-date fare” despite those heavy-duty themes. That is one critic’s judgment, not a general verdict on the film or its audience.
She also describes the middle as slack, with an entertaining resolution that restores some momentum. The contrast matters: the central mystery and dialogue hold interest, but the pacing and the depth given to the characters’ choices are less consistent.

Does the play premise translate to film?
The party, confined group and single unexplained incident make a naturally theatrical premise: the action depends on conversation, shifting accounts and how the friends read one another. Ramnath’s comments suggest that Bele’s dialogue remains a strength on screen, while her criticism of the film’s plain visual approach points to a less distinctive cinematic treatment.
That combination makes the adaptation most appealing to viewers who enjoy ensemble banter and relationship mysteries. Those looking for a sustained, searching examination of the fallout from betrayal may find that the film’s comic lightness limits what it can say.
