It is not a portrait built from a direct interview: Musk did not participate, and the film uses reporting, interviews with people around him and public recordings—including a deliberately artificial CGI avatar speaking words he has said in public.
What is Alex Gibney’s documentary Musk about?
The film examines how Musk accumulated influence across electric cars, rockets, Twitter/X, artificial intelligence and politics. It also looks at the mythology surrounding his rise and asks what happens when a single person has power across so many domains. The Los Angeles Times describes a nearly four-hour documentary that draws on interviews with Musk’s family, former friends and employees, journalists and business associates, rather than an interview with Musk himself. Los Angeles Times
Gibney has characterized the film as an inquiry into the nature and scope of Musk’s power. In an Associated Press interview, he described Musk’s confidence in talking about the future in ways that persuade people to invest. That is the director’s interpretation, not an independent finding about the accuracy of Musk’s predictions or the performance of his companies. Associated Press
How does the film get “inside” Musk’s head?
It does not claim access to Musk’s private thoughts. Instead, the filmmakers assemble testimony and public material to interpret his decisions and influence. A recurring CGI avatar, visibly artificial rather than presented as real footage, speaks words drawn from Musk’s interviews and public appearances. The effect gives the film a way to stage a public persona; it is not a substitute for Musk speaking directly to the filmmakers. Los Angeles Times

Why Musk is not interviewed
Gibney says he initially admired Musk and wanted to interview him. Producer Jessie Deeter, who had previously worked with Musk, also tried repeatedly to persuade him to take part, according to the Los Angeles Times. Gibney described Musk’s response as “Which I took as a no.” The film therefore relies on other interviewees and public recordings, a limitation viewers should keep in mind when weighing its account. Los Angeles Times
Why did Gibney make the film?
The Associated Press reports that Gibney was approached about the project in early 2023. A friend persuaded him to pursue it as a portrait of 21st-century power. Gibney has said he started from admiration and hoped to speak with Musk, before the project became an investigation into the reach of Musk’s influence. Associated Press

The film’s scope shifted as events unfolded. Gibney told the Los Angeles Times that a near-finished two-hour cut existed by spring 2024. After Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt and Musk endorsed him, HBO executives urged the filmmakers to continue following the story. The project grew to six hours before Gibney cut it back; that account of the production comes from the director. Los Angeles Times
What does the film argue about power and rule-bending?
In a Los Angeles Times Studios interview labeled paid program, Gibney discusses what he calls “noble cause corruption”: the idea that believing oneself to be a force for good can make bending rules seem justified. He summarized that view this way: “Once you decide that you’re a force for good, you’re entitled to bend the rules.” This is Gibney’s analytical frame for the documentary, not a court or regulator’s finding about Musk. What has Musk said about the documentary?
The Los Angeles Times reports that Musk called the film a “hit piece” and a “psy op.” His lawyer, Alex Spiro, threatened to sue, alleging that the documentary falsely implied Musk used Starlink to sway the 2024 election. Spiro also said Musk’s team was rebuffed when it tried to provide information during fact-checking.
Jigsaw Productions defended the documentary as a fact-based examination of a powerful public figure protected by the First Amendment, and Gibney said he stands by his reporting. These are opposing positions: the reporting reviewed here does not establish a court ruling on the threatened claim. Claims and recollections by people interviewed for the film should likewise be understood as attributed testimony, not automatically as settled fact. Los Angeles Times Vanity Fair
