What is Unless Something Goes Terribly Wrong about?
Directed by Kaitlyn Schwalje and Alex Wolf Lewis, this feature documentary follows a wastewater facility in Portland, Maine, over the course of a year. It centers on the people who keep the plant running: manager Dustin, second-in-command Zac and newer employee Jimmy, who is preparing for an entry-level operator exam. The film brings everyday wastewater work into view alongside the pressures of aging infrastructure, PFAS and public perceptions of the work. The filmmakers describe it as “A buddy comedy about poop and the thankless pursuit of making a better world.” The official film website presents that as its logline.
How long is the film?
Festival and cinema listings give the documentary a running time of 73 minutes and identify it as an English-language U.S. film. The Fall River announcement lists a two-hour event window, 6–8 p.m.; it does not explain whether that includes an introduction, discussion or other programming, so the precise screening and event schedule is not established.

Wastewater treatment is a public service most people rarely see, even though communities depend on facilities and the workers who operate them. The film’s focus on a plant’s daily routines gives viewers a human-scale way into issues such as aging systems and PFAS. Its official site relays a projection from the American Society of Civil Engineers’ 2025 report: the water and wastewater industry’s budget gap could reach $690 billion by 2044 under current investment rates. That figure is reported by the filmmakers’ website as an ASCE projection; the underlying report is not independently represented here. The filmmakers’ discussion of the figure gives its attribution and qualification.
