AI in anime production is revolutionizing the animation industry in 2025 mainly by assisting people with repetitive, expensive tasks—not by autonomously replacing an anime studio. Japanese projects are testing anime-specific video and image models, OLM Digital is studying production-stage assistance, and Sony reports deployed machine-learning lip-sync; human artists still direct, revise, and approve the work.
The most important change is therefore operational rather than cinematic. AI can propose, interpolate, synchronize, clean, colorize, or generate drafts, while artists and supervisors decide whether the result preserves acting intent, continuity, character identity, and visual style.
The evidence comes from different stages of maturity: Sony reports a concrete lip-sync example, OLM Digital is investigating AI inside an anime-production workflow, and Japan’s GENIAC program is funding anime-specific foundation-model development. Those examples should not be collapsed into a claim that every studio uses the same tools or that a complete series can be generated automatically.
Key takeaways
- AI in anime production is being tested primarily as supervised workflow assistance for in-betweening, finishing, coloring, backgrounds, character drawing, video generation, and lip-sync.
- Japan’s METI-backed GENIAC projects are developing Japanese-language anime video-generation and anime-specialized image-generation models to address labor shortages and long working hours.
- AIdeaLab reported a 75% human-evaluation win rate for Japanese-anime likeness against KLING 2.0 MASTER, but its reported FVD was 851 against a stated target of 100 or below.
- Sony reports that its machine-learning lip-sync engine began trial use with a television anime broadcast in 2021 and had reached a fourth reported title by its 2025 corporate report.
- No cited source demonstrates reliable, prompt-only production of a finished commercial anime episode, television series, or feature film without substantial human direction, correction, and quality control.
How is AI in anime production revolutionizing the animation industry in 2025?
AI is changing anime production in 2025 by taking on selected repetitive tasks while leaving creative direction and final approval with people. The strongest evidence points to task-level assistance rather than autonomous studio replacement: Japanese government-backed model development, OLM Digital’s production-workflow research, and Sony’s reported use of machine-learning lip-sync all fit that pattern.

The distinction matters. A system that proposes an in-between drawing, colors a draft, generates a background, or synchronizes mouth movement can reduce manual work without deciding how a character should act, whether a shot preserves continuity, or whether a scene expresses the director’s intent. In practical terms, the near-term revolution is a change in the division of labor inside the pipeline.
Japan’s GENIAC kickoff materials describe anime-specific development as a response to labor shortages and long working hours. The materials distinguish this work from general-purpose consumer image generation by focusing on Japanese-language anime video generation and anime-specialized foundation models.
Which parts of anime production can AI assist with?
AI can assist with several production stages, but the degree of automation depends on the task, the quality of the input material, and the amount of correction required from artists.
| Production task | Evidence in 2025 research | Likely AI contribution | Human responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Key animation and in-betweening | OLM Digital’s ANIMINS project | Propose drawings or interpolate movement between supplied poses | Set acting, timing, poses, anatomy, and corrections |
| Finishing and cleanup | OLM Digital’s ANIMINS project | Assist with repetitive finishing work | Inspect line quality, preserve style, and approve the final image |
| Coloring | AiHUB prototype described by METI | Provide coloring assistance for production artwork | Choose palettes, correct errors, and maintain scene continuity |
| Backgrounds | AiHUB prototype described by METI | Generate or suggest background material | Control layout, perspective, story requirements, and compositing |
| Character drawing | OLM Digital’s ANIMINS project | Support drawing and draft creation | Protect character identity, proportions, expression, and design intent |
| Lip-sync | Sony’s reported production engine | Match mouth movement to phoneme and timing information in voice data | Review acting, emphasis, emotional timing, and unusual dialogue |
| Motion and effects exploration | AIdeaLab’s text-to-anime-video and image-to-anime-video work | Generate early movement or effects proposals from prompts and images | Select usable material, repair shots, and integrate the result into the edit |
These categories do not mean that every anime studio has adopted every function. OLM Digital is investigating a practical workflow, Sony describes a concrete lip-sync deployment, and the GENIAC projects are developing and evaluating models. Those are different levels of evidence and should not be presented as one universal industry workflow.

Japan’s GENIAC program is supporting two notably different directions: AIdeaLab’s anime-focused video-generation work and AiHUB’s anime image-generation research. The projects should be compared by production purpose rather than treated as interchangeable anime generators.
Toshiki Tomihira, an AIdeaLab representative, described the objective in METI’s kickoff material: To address labor shortages and long working hours in the anime industry, we are developing the world’s first Japanese-language anime video generation AI foundation model and video generation AI platform. We aim to establish an environment where lightweight models, operable on standard GPUs, can be widely used as open-source tools.
The statement describes a development goal, not proof that a finished commercial episode can already be made from a prompt.
| Project direction | Primary output | Reported functions or focus | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| AIdeaLab | Anime-focused video-generation model and platform | Text-to-anime-video and image-to-anime-video generation, including movement and effects based on prompts | Reliable prompt-only production of a broadcast-ready episode or feature |
| AiHUB | Anime-specialized image-generation foundation-model research | Background generation, coloring assistance, and planned improvements for in-between creation and rough-drawing completion | Fully autonomous drawing, cleanup, continuity, or studio delivery |
The GENIAC Phase 2 results report presents these as model and product-development efforts aimed at future use by individual creators and anime companies. The report supports a cautious description: these systems can produce useful drafts or assistance in defined tasks, but professional production still requires review, cleanup, compositing, and editorial decisions.
How good are anime AI models according to the available evaluations?
The available evaluation results are promising in one dimension and weak in another, which is why a single headline number cannot establish production readiness.
| Measure | Reported result | Owner and date | Correct interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japanese-anime likeness | 75% human-evaluation win rate against KLING 2.0 MASTER | AIdeaLab, reported by Japan’s METI in 2025 | A pairwise result under the cited human-evaluation setup, not a universal quality score |
| FVD for the reported anime-specific model | 851 | AIdeaLab, reported by Japan’s METI in 2025 | A model-evaluation metric that was above the stated target of 100 or below; it is not a consumer rating |
According to METI’s Detailed Performance Evaluation Results for GENIAC Phase 2 (2025), AIdeaLab’s model achieved a 75% human-evaluation win rate for Japanese-anime likeness against KLING 2.0 MASTER. According to the same evaluation report, the model’s reported FVD was 851 against a stated target of 100 or below.

The 75% result does not mean that 75% of anime production can be automated. The result compares outputs in one evaluation setup, while production readiness also depends on temporal consistency, character identity, controllability, editability, rights-cleared data, compute requirements, and the amount of professional repair. The two reported metrics demonstrate why anime studios need task-specific tests instead of relying on one attractive score.
Is AI already being used in real anime production?
Yes, but the evidence describes specific assisted functions and controlled workflow research—not an autonomous production pipeline.
| Evidence level | Example | What can be said accurately |
|---|---|---|
| Reported production use | Sony automatic lip-sync engine | Sony says trial use began with a television anime broadcast in 2021 and identifies a fourth and latest title using the technology at the time of its 2025 report |
| Production-workflow investigation | OLM Digital ANIMINS | OLM Digital is studying AI for original animation, in-betweening, finishing, and character drawing with practical validation and quantitative efficiency evaluation |
| Foundation-model development | AIdeaLab and AiHUB under GENIAC | Japanese-language anime video and image-generation capabilities are being developed for future production use |
| General creator software | Adobe Character Animator | Automatic lip-sync, webcam and microphone input, face and body tracking, and Adobe Sensei-powered body tracking are documented, but the software is not evidence of an anime-specific foundation model |
OLM Digital’s ANIMINS project description is particularly important because it concerns actual anime-production settings rather than only consumer demonstrations. The stated project goal includes developing a model workflow, validating practical use, and measuring production efficiency quantitatively.
How does Sony’s AI lip-sync system work?
Sony’s reported lip-sync engine analyzes phoneme and timing information from voice data and uses that information to synchronize a character’s mouth movement with spoken dialogue.
Sony Group states in its Corporate Report 2025: In the area of anime production, we developed an automatic lip sync engine that recognizes phoneme and timing information from the voice data and began its trial launch from a TV anime broadcast in 2021.
Sony also reports that the theatrical version of Utano ☆ Princesama TABOO NIGHT XXXX, scheduled for release in 2025, was the fourth and latest title using the technology at the time of the report. Sony presents dialogue subtitling and manually syncing mouth movements as examples of labor-intensive tasks that can consume creators’ time. Automatic synchronization therefore illustrates the practical meaning of AI assistance: removing repetitive timing work can leave more time for expressive decisions, even though the result still needs review.
Can AI generate a full anime episode from one prompt?
No cited evidence shows that AI can reliably generate a complete, broadcast-ready commercial anime episode from one prompt without substantial human work.
Text-to-video and image-to-video systems can help explore movement, effects, or shot ideas. They do not automatically solve the full chain of story development, character design, layout, key animation, in-betweening, backgrounds, coloring, compositing, editing, sound, continuity, revisions, delivery specifications, and legal clearance. A short demonstration can also avoid problems that become obvious across a long sequence of connected shots.
The defensible 2025 claim is that video-generation models are being developed and tested for future production support. Prompt-only autonomous production of an entire television series or feature film remains unestablished by the sources in this report.

Can AI keep anime characters consistent from shot to shot?
Reliable long-range character consistency remains an unresolved production problem in the cited evidence. The sources discuss anime likeness, generation functions, and workflow assistance, but they do not establish a general solution for keeping a character’s face, proportions, costume, line work, acting, and relationship to the environment stable across many connected shots.
| Problem | Why it matters in anime production | Evidence-based 2025 position |
|---|---|---|
| Character identity across shots | Small changes in facial structure, costume, or proportions can break continuity | No reliable general solution is established by the cited sources |
| Coherent acting | Performance depends on timing, emphasis, pose design, and emotional progression | Human direction and supervision remain necessary |
| Long-sequence continuity | Camera, layout, lighting, props, and screen direction must remain coherent | Model demonstrations do not prove series-scale consistency |
| Style preservation | Line quality, color design, and animation supervision must remain intentional | Anime likeness results are useful evidence, but not proof of full style control |
Will AI replace anime artists?
The available evidence does not show that AI has replaced anime artists or that complete anime studios can operate without artists. The more defensible model is human-in-the-loop production, in which AI proposes, interpolates, synchronizes, cleans, colorizes, or drafts while artists and supervisors select, correct, redraw, edit, or reject the results.

Directors and animation supervisors still need to preserve acting intent, continuity, timing, and style. Producers and legal teams also need to manage provenance, permissions, contracts, privacy, security, and delivery risk. The sources do not prove that every studio uses exactly this division of labor, but OLM Digital’s creator-support framing and Sony’s governance language support it as the evidence-led direction.
Sony describes its position clearly: Sony is positioning AI as a catalyst for positive transformation and a partner in creativity, based on the belief that AI should support people.
That statement appears in Sony’s Corporate Report 2025. It is a company position rather than proof of an industry-wide policy, but it matches the practical examples documented in the anime workflow research.
Which anime-production tasks are easiest and hardest to automate?
Repetitive, well-bounded tasks with clear inputs and measurable outputs are more tractable than tasks requiring long-range judgment, performance interpretation, or responsibility for the final work.
| More tractable assistance | Why it is a plausible early use | Harder or unresolved work | Why human judgment remains difficult to replace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lip-sync and mouth timing | Voice data supplies phoneme and timing information | Director-level aesthetic decisions | They depend on story, performance, tone, and context |
| Rough in-betweening and interpolation | Supplied poses define a bounded movement problem | Final animation supervision | Supervisors must judge acting, anatomy, rhythm, and continuity |
| Cleanup, finishing, and coloring assistance | Many operations are repetitive and visually inspectable | Long-range character consistency | Identity and design must remain stable across connected shots |
| Background ideation | A draft can accelerate exploration of visual possibilities | Story-level judgment | A usable background must serve layout, narrative, and composition |
| Storyboard and rough-shot visualization | Fast drafts can support early iteration | Rights-cleared industrial-scale training | Data provenance and permission requirements remain unresolved by generation quality alone |
| Subtitling and localization support | Text and dialogue timing are comparatively structured tasks | Fully autonomous episode delivery | Many departments, revisions, approvals, and legal obligations must align |
OLM Digital, Sony, and METI support the more tractable categories above. The cited sources do not establish reliable general solutions for the harder categories, so claims that AI can replace final animation supervision or deliver a finished series should be treated as speculation rather than reporting.

There is no verified universal list of AI tools used by anime studios. The evidence supports a more careful map of specific projects, production functions, and general animation software.
| Tool, project, or category | Relevant capability | Anime-specific status | Best description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sony automatic lip-sync engine | Phoneme and voice-timing recognition for mouth synchronization | Reported trial and title use in anime production | Concrete task automation |
| OLM Digital ANIMINS | Key animation, in-betweening, finishing, and character-drawing investigation | Anime-production workflow research | Controlled creator-support research |
| AIdeaLab GENIAC project | Text-to-anime-video and image-to-anime-video generation | Anime-focused model development | Future-facing video-generation platform work |
| AiHUB GENIAC project | Background generation, coloring assistance, and planned rough-drawing support | Anime-specialized image-generation research | Assistive image-model development |
| Adobe Character Animator | Automatic lip-sync, webcam and microphone input, face and body tracking, and Adobe Sensei-powered body tracking | General character-animation software, not an anime-specific foundation model | Existing AI-assisted animation software |
| Blender 4.4.3 | Animation workflow, modeling, sculpting, and video-editing improvements listed in the April 29, 2025 release information | General 3D and hybrid production foundation | Conventional production software that can be paired with other tools |
| OpenToonz | 2D animation functions including onion skin, rigging, and effects | Open-source 2D animation software, not evidence of integrated generative AI | Conventional workflow foundation that AI tools may augment |
Adobe’s Character Animator documentation makes it useful as an example of existing AI-assisted character animation, but it should not be conflated with the Japanese anime-specific foundation models described by GENIAC. Adobe’s behavior documentation identifies Adobe Sensei-powered body tracking alongside other tracking and lip-sync functions.
Blender’s official release information lists version 4.4.3 and improvements to animation workflow, modeling, sculpting, and video editing on April 29, 2025. The release information does not establish that Blender includes a native anime-specific generative-video model. Likewise, OpenToonz’s official materials document a conventional open-source 2D animation package; they do not establish an integrated generative-AI anime pipeline.

What should studios measure before adopting anime AI?
A studio should measure a specific production task and the complete human revision burden, rather than asking whether an AI model is generally good at anime.
- Define the task. Separate image generation, video generation, lip-sync, in-betweening, cleanup, coloring, backgrounds, previs, and localization support.
- Test controllability. Record whether the system follows pose, camera, timing, layout, character identity, and edit instructions.
- Measure consistency. Review connected shots for stable characters, line work, proportions, backgrounds, and screen direction.
- Count revision work. Record redraws, cleanup, compositing, rejected outputs, and supervisor time instead of measuring only generation speed.
- Check pipeline integration. Confirm compatibility with the studio’s animation software, file formats, render systems, review process, and delivery requirements.
- Audit data provenance. Document the source and permission status of training data, reference images, voices, character designs, and other proprietary material.
- Evaluate production risk. Test privacy, security, contractual restrictions, model availability, compute requirements, and the ability to reproduce or revise an approved result.
- Compare measured benefit. Use task-specific time, quality, and revision measurements rather than claims that AI replaces artists or eliminates a department.
The GENIAC evaluation results show why this framework matters. A favorable human-evaluation comparison and a weaker model metric can coexist. Production readiness requires a combination of quality, control, consistency, legal clearance, and manageable human effort.
How much production time or money does AI save?
No authoritative source in the supplied evidence publishes a general industry-wide percentage for anime production automated by AI, a verified number of anime jobs eliminated by AI, or a universal production-time reduction.
AI may reduce labor in a particular task, especially when the task is repetitive and the output is easy to review. However, the net benefit depends on correction time, failed generations, continuity problems, software integration, training-data restrictions, compute costs, and the creative staff needed to supervise the result. A studio’s measured benefit can therefore differ substantially from a model demonstration’s generation speed.
OLM Digital’s decision to pursue practical validation and quantitative efficiency evaluation is significant for exactly this reason. Until those measurements are published for a defined workflow, claims about industry-wide cost savings should remain qualified.

AI-generated anime is not governed by one blanket rule: legal outcomes depend on the jurisdiction, the training and reference data, the characters and likenesses involved, and the extent of human creative contribution to the final work.
What does Japan’s copyright guidance say?
Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs says its AI-and-copyright materials reflect current interpretation in an area where case law has not accumulated sufficiently and provides a checklist and guidance for stakeholders. The agency’s English overview warns that its General Understanding is not legally binding and is not a definitive assessment of every specific generative-AI system or technology.
The agency’s FAQ explains that a work autonomously generated by AI may fail to qualify as a copyrighted work, while a work created with AI used as a tool may qualify when a person makes creative contributions. The outcome depends on the particular facts, including creative intent and creative contribution. Studios should consult the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ AI and Copyright in Japan materials rather than treating AI assistance as automatic permission.
What does the United States Copyright Office say?
On January 29, 2025, Shira Perlmutter, Register of Copyrights and Director of the U.S. Copyright Office, stated: Where that creativity is expressed through the use of AI systems, it continues to enjoy protection.
The same U.S. Copyright Office report release says that mere prompting is not sufficient by itself, while human-authored material incorporated into an AI output or a human creative arrangement and modification may support protection.

The U.S. Copyright Office release also states: Extending protection to material whose expressive elements are determined by a machine, however, would undermine rather than further the constitutional goals of copyright.
This is an official policy statement, not a case-specific ruling about an anime project.
What should an anime production document?
- Training-data and reference-data provenance, including licenses and permissions where applicable.
- Rights for characters, voices, likenesses, proprietary designs, and commissioned artwork.
- Human review, revision, redraw, and approval records.
- Model versions, prompts, source assets, generated outputs, and the people responsible for final creative decisions.
- Jurisdiction-specific legal review before commercial release.
A recognizable style or character should not be treated as automatically free to reproduce. Copyright, personality rights, contract terms, privacy, and other legal issues can apply differently depending on the country and the facts of the production.
What hardware still matters in a human-led AI workflow?
AI assistance does not remove the need for precise human input. Artists still draw, revise, annotate, inspect, and supervise outputs, so a drawing tablet for anime production or a pen display can remain a practical part of the production stack.
Wacom describes its drawing displays and tablets as production tools for animated television, online cartoons, stop-motion shorts, and 3D animated movies. The relevant point is not that a tablet performs generative AI; the tablet is the human-input layer through which artists correct AI-assisted drafts and create work directly.
Recommended Free Tools
That distinction also explains why workstation maintenance is only an adjacent concern rather than evidence of an anime-AI product category. The supplied research does not document a specific PC-maintenance product deployment in anime production or a measured animation benefit, so hardware and software choices should be evaluated on verified workflow needs rather than AI marketing language.
What does the wider anime industry data show?
The Association of Japanese Animations publishes annual Japanese animation-industry reports and English summary pages for its 2024 and 2025 reporting. The existence of those reports provides useful business context, but it does not establish an AI adoption rate, an automation percentage, or a number of jobs affected by AI.
Readers should consult the specific Association of Japanese Animations industry-data page and the relevant report PDF before using any industry-scale figure. AI adoption should not be inferred merely from the overall size or growth of the animation market.
What is the most accurate forecast for anime AI?
The most evidence-based forecast is a layered production workflow. AI will increasingly propose drafts, interpolate movement, synchronize dialogue, assist with cleanup and coloring, generate backgrounds, and support early visual exploration. Artists, animation supervisors, directors, producers, and legal teams will continue to decide what survives into the final work.
The pace of change will be fastest where studios can define the task, supply suitable inputs, evaluate the output, and correct mistakes cheaply. The pace will be slower where the task requires consistent character identity across many shots, nuanced acting, story-level judgment, or rights-cleared data at industrial scale.
That is why the phrase AI revolutionizing anime production should describe workflow transformation rather than an unsupported claim of artist replacement. The 2025 evidence shows meaningful automation in specific tasks, serious research inside production pipelines, and ambitious anime-specific model development—but not a demonstrated autonomous anime studio.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: AI is already changing anime production through supervised tools for lip-sync, drafts, in-betweening, finishing, coloring, backgrounds, and visual exploration. In 2025, the evidence supports AI as a production assistant and accelerator, not as a reliable replacement for artists, directors, animation supervisors, or legal review.
