Spotify removed it after fans and Foley’s label flagged it. A separate fake song attributed to Guy Clark was also reported taken down. The cases show a gap between Spotify’s rule against unauthorized impersonation and its ability to prevent a misleading release from appearing in the first place—not that Spotify deliberately authorized the uploads.
What appeared on Blaze Foley’s Spotify page
TechRadar, reporting on a 404 Media story, said “Together” appeared as a new release on Foley’s official Spotify artist page the week before July 23, 2025. Foley was killed in 1989. The track was described as an AI-generated country ballad unlike his work, rather than a previously undiscovered recording. Fans and Lost Art Records, Foley’s label, flagged it, and Spotify removed it, according to TechRadar’s account.
The same report said another fake song attributed to Guy Clark, who died in 2016, was taken down. TechRadar also reported that the tracks’ copyright tags named a company called Syntax Error; it did not establish who controlled that company. The report attributed the Foley and Clark uploads to SoundOn, a distributor owned by TikTok, based on Spotify’s explanation. The precise upload pathway and which safeguards failed were not fully documented in that account.
Spotify’s rule prohibits unauthorized vocal impersonation
Spotify’s artist-support policy says, “Spotify will remove music that impersonates another artist’s voice without their permission — whether that’s using AI voice cloning or any other method.” The policy covers a recognizable replica of an artist’s voice even if the artist is not named in the track’s metadata or credits, and even if the release is labeled an “AI version.” Spotify says certain forms of parody may be exceptions.

That rule addresses voice imitation. The Foley report also describes a different problem: a track being delivered to the wrong artist profile. A misleading profile attribution and an unauthorized vocal clone can overlap, but they are not the same issue. A fake track could be placed on an artist’s page without convincingly imitating the artist’s voice; a recognizable voice clone could violate the policy even without naming the artist in its metadata.
How an artist or representative can make a claim
Spotify says it cannot determine from listening alone whether a voice use is an authorized sample or collaboration. Its policy therefore directs an affected artist, or someone acting on the artist’s behalf, to submit a claim through Spotify’s legal form and select Publicity / Likeness. Spotify says it reviews claims and takes action as appropriate, including removal when the policy has been violated.

This is the specific process Spotify documents for voice-impersonation claims by an artist or representative. The policy page does not establish that every listener has the same route for reporting a wrongly attributed track.
What Spotify said about the Foley and Clark tracks
In TechRadar’s account of the 404 Media report, Spotify said the material violated its deceptive-content rules, which prohibit impersonation intended to mislead. TechRadar reproduced Spotify’s statement that the service takes action against licensors and distributors that fail to police this kind of fraud, and that repeated or egregious violations can lead to permanent removal from Spotify. These statements are reported through TechRadar’s account, rather than quoted here from a Spotify newsroom announcement.

Safeguards Spotify announced after the incident
On September 25, 2025, Spotify announced work in three areas: impersonation enforcement, spam filtering and AI disclosures in music credits. It said it was testing ways to prevent fraudulent delivery to another artist’s profile with music distributors and investing in its content-mismatch process, including reports before release. Spotify’s announcement describes planned and ongoing company measures; it does not establish that they prevent every false attribution.
Spam detection
Spotify said its spam filter would identify tracks and uploaders using tactics such as mass uploads, duplicates, SEO manipulation and artificially short tracks. The company said flagged material would be tagged and stopped from being recommended. Spotify also said it had removed 75 million “spammy” tracks in the 12 months before its September 2025 announcement. That figure is Spotify’s count of spammy tracks, not a count of impersonation cases.
AI contribution credits
Spotify said it supports a DDEX-developed standard for describing where AI contributed to a track, such as vocals, instrumentation or post-production. Labels, distributors and other music partners submit that information. An update on Spotify’s September 2025 announcement said a beta had launched on April 16, without specifying the year in the displayed update, and that disclosed AI contributions could appear in mobile Song Credits. Spotify said it was receiving tens of thousands of AI credits daily at the time of that update. These credits describe disclosed AI involvement; they do not by themselves resolve whether a track is correctly attributed to an artist.

In an August 11, 2026 announcement, Spotify described AI Persona badges for artist profiles whose public identity appears to be photorealistic and AI-generated. Spotify said artists could self-disclose through Spotify for Artists and that it would also review profiles, initially using audience thresholds. It planned badge visibility beginning in mid-September 2026, so the precise placement and availability may have changed since the announcement.

Spotify’s support page distinguishes the badge from a label about a track’s origins: a badge identifies an AI-generated photorealistic artist identity, not AI-generated music. A badged artist may release music made by people, by AI, or through a mix of both. Spotify says it excludes AI Persona music from editorial or algorithmic recommendations by default, except when a listener intentionally engages with the artist, such as by following them. That is a separate question from falsely attaching a song to the profile of a real, deceased musician.
What the cases establish—and what they do not
The reported Foley and Clark removals establish that false attribution can reach artist pages before it is flagged and removed. Spotify’s policy prohibits unauthorized vocal impersonation, and the company has described prevention and review measures. The published material cited here does not independently audit how well those controls work, identify who controlled the company named in the copyright tags, or document every step between upload and removal.
