Melody Thomas Scott has described motherhood as part of learning to accept herself after childhood abuse—not as a cure for trauma. In interviews about her memoir, Always Young and Restless, she has also spoken about leaving her grandmother’s home, the difficulty of revisiting painful memories, and being unsure whether she can forgive her grandmother.
How Scott says she began to find happiness
Asked when she started to find happiness, Scott pointed to leaving her grandmother’s home at age 20 and moving into a small apartment. In her account, that was when she realized she could begin a life of her own. She also connected becoming a mother with a longer process of self-acceptance: “I think having my children was the beginning of learning how to accept myself.” In her August 18, 2020 interview with TV Insider, she spoke of pride in her daughters and in how she had parented them.

Scott has three daughters: Jennifer, Alexandra, and Elizabeth. Her account is personal: she has described raising them as a source of pride and having children as part of learning to accept herself. It does not establish that parenthood automatically heals abuse, or that other survivors will experience motherhood in the same way.
Why writing the memoir was difficult
Scott’s memoir, Always Young and Restless: My Life on and Off America’s #1 Daytime Drama, recounts her early life and career alongside her television work. The publisher describes her upbringing with her grandmother, abuse by men in the entertainment industry, and her effort to take greater control of her life and career. The hardcover edition was published by Diversion Books on August 18, 2020; it is 288 pages and has ISBN 9781635766943. The publisher’s listing provides the book details.

Scott has said that starting the book took years because she had to unlock emotional memories and mentally revisit events. She initially gravitated toward writing the darker chapters. She also told Soap Opera Digest that her family read sensitive passages before submission and could raise concerns about what she might reveal; she said they agreed with her decision to include them. Her interview with the magazine describes both the family’s review and the hope she wanted readers to take from the book.
A pause, then a return to the story
Scott told Parade that she paused her writing after experiencing panic and agoraphobic attacks, then later felt ready to continue. She also described the abuse she says she experienced while under her grandmother’s care and the difficulty of forgiving her grandmother. In that interview, she described her grandmother’s failure to stop the abuse as a major obstacle to forgiveness. Scott has said she is unsure whether she will ever forgive her. Her account does not offer a neat resolution in which survival requires forgiveness.

- With its alluring tales of Gothic mystery and supernatural intrigue, Dark Shadows became one of the most popular daytime series of all time. Since first airing on ABC-TV from 1966-71, Dark Shadows has earned the reputation of being one of the most unusual and enduring programs in television history. The character of Barnabas Collins, a guilt-ridden, 175 year-old vampire, brought the show tremendou
What Scott hoped readers would take from her story
Scott has said she hopes readers will see that hope and happiness are possible, while recognizing that some people take longer to find them than others. “Happiness is possible for all of us,” she told Soap Opera Digest. That is her hope and personal philosophy, not a promise about what every reader will experience.
She has also described childhood acting sets as places where cast and crew treated her kindly, in contrast with home, and The Young and the Restless as a source of family and community. Those connections are part of her account of belonging; she has not presented work as something that, by itself, resolved the abuse.

Reading Scott’s account
Always Young and Restless is Scott’s firsthand memoir, while her interviews offer shorter reflections on particular parts of her story. The book’s publisher describes its contents and identifies the hardcover edition; interviews record what Scott has said publicly. Neither should be mistaken for a clinical assessment or individualized guidance about trauma.
