Short answer: Meta did discuss bringing AI-generated characters to Facebook and Instagram as account-like profiles, complete with biographies, profile pictures and AI-created content. But that was a reported future direction—not a dated, fully specified public launch. Meta’s first official AI-character experiment, introduced in 2023, was removed in January 2025. As of August 18, 2026, there is no confirmed evidence of a broad rollout of autonomous AI profiles that independently behave like ordinary human users.
What is already expanding is a wider AI layer across Meta’s services: assistants, support tools, search, content creation, recommendations and increasingly agentic features.
What Meta said about AI accounts
In December 2024, Meta executive Connor Hayes told the Financial Times that AI characters could eventually exist on Facebook and Instagram “in the same way that accounts do.” The reported concept included an AI-generated persona with a profile picture, biography and the ability to create and share content. Users might also be able to create or customize their own characters.
That statement described Meta’s direction of travel. It was not a complete product announcement. Meta did not provide a public launch date, eligibility rules, a final labeling system, technical details about autonomy, or a full moderation policy. The account-like characters described in the report should therefore not be confused with a product that was immediately available to every Facebook or Instagram user. This was not Meta’s first AI-character experiment
Meta had already tested official social profiles for AI characters in September 2023. The company introduced 28 characters with different interests and personalities. Users could follow some of them on Facebook and Instagram, while people in a U.S. beta could message them through Instagram or Messenger.
Meta said the profiles and related visual material were curated by the company. Some characters were associated with public figures who embodied the personalities, but those people were representatives of the characters—not the actual operators of the accounts. Meta’s original announcement is available in its newsroom.
What happened to those profiles?
The original Meta-created AI profiles were removed in early January 2025 after users rediscovered them and shared conversations online. The profiles attracted criticism because their humanlike presentation did not always match the systems’ awkward, implausible or unreliable responses. The character called “Liv” received particular attention over its identity description and answers.

Reporting and public discussion differed over the precise reasons, including technical problems, moderation concerns and the backlash itself. Their removal is important because screenshots or references to the 2023 test do not prove that a new mass rollout of autonomous AI users had begun. The answer depends on what “AI accounts” means.

- AI-generated content is already present. People and organizations can use Meta’s tools to create or edit images, videos and other material. Meta has also tested AI-generated or “imagined” content in feeds.
- Meta AI assistants are already integrated into Meta products. They answer questions, help with creation and search, and increasingly perform tasks.
- Automated and AI-assisted accounts may exist independently. Businesses, developers, creators and spam networks can use automation or AI.
- A broad Meta rollout of autonomous AI-user profiles is not confirmed. The available official material does not establish that Meta has launched a documented population of profiles that independently post, follow, message and interact as ordinary users.
A chatbot, an AI-edited image, a human-run account using generative tools, an automated spam bot and a persistent AI persona are different things:

What Meta’s AI products are doing now
Meta’s current AI strategy is broader than the proposed AI-account idea.
Meta AI assistants and the standalone app
Meta launched a standalone Meta AI app in April 2025, built with Llama 4, alongside AI features across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. Meta says the assistant can personalize responses using information people choose to share, including profile information and content they like or engage with. Connecting Facebook and Instagram through Accounts Center can provide additional context for personalization.
Meta also says that content is not posted to a user’s feed merely because it was discussed with Meta AI; users choose whether to share it. Details are in Meta’s announcement of the Meta AI app.
AI support on Facebook and Instagram
In March 2026, Meta announced an AI support assistant for Facebook and Instagram in countries and territories where Meta AI is available on iOS, Android and supported desktop Help Center experiences. Depending on availability, it can answer account questions and help with actions such as reporting scams, understanding content removals, managing privacy settings, resetting passwords and updating profile settings. Support for some account-login problems began in selected cases in the United States and Canada.

This is an account-support tool, not an autonomous social profile. Meta lists the assistant’s capabilities and rollout details.
AI search and creation tools
Meta announced Facebook AI Mode in June 2026, a search experience intended to answer questions using public recommendations, opinions and information shared across Meta’s apps rather than simply returning links. The company also announced new AI creation and editing tools. These features increase the amount of AI in the platform without creating a network of independent AI users.

AI-generated feed material
Meta has tested “imagined for you” material generated by Meta AI in Facebook and Instagram feeds. This is algorithmically surfaced AI content. It should not automatically be described as content posted by an autonomous account, because the available reporting does not establish that each item comes from a persistent AI profile.

More agentic Meta AI
In July 2026, Meta said its Meta AI app and meta.ai were gaining abilities to make plans, connect to email and calendar apps, create slides, conduct research and perform tasks. Meta said these capabilities were initially rolling out in selected markets and would expand over time.

These are assistant and agent functions. They are not, by themselves, evidence that AI profiles are operating as ordinary social users. Meta describes the newer agentic capabilities here.
Would users know they were talking to AI?
This remains one of the most important unanswered questions. Meta has announced labeling for AI-generated images on Facebook, Instagram and Threads when its systems can detect appropriate industry-standard signals. Meta’s approach is not perfect: detection may fail, and an unlabeled post is not proof that a human made it. Meta explains its labeling approach and limitations.
A properly designed AI profile would need more than occasional labels. Users should look for:
- A persistent profile-level AI disclosure or badge.
- Labels on generated posts, images, videos and replies.
- A clear statement in direct messages that the user is interacting with AI.
- A named human, company, creator or organization responsible for the profile.
- Commercial and sponsorship disclosures.
- Controls to mute, block, report or exclude AI profiles.
- Protection against impersonating real people.
- Age safeguards for children and teenagers.
- Clear conversation deletion and data-use controls.
- Moderation standards at least as strong as those applied to human accounts.
Meta has not publicly supplied a complete set of rules for a future account-like AI system.
Privacy and recommendation concerns
The privacy issue is not simply whether Meta can hear private conversations. Readers should distinguish between several uses of information:

- Information used to personalize Meta AI.
- Interactions used to personalize content recommendations.
- Interactions used to personalize advertising recommendations.
- Information a user voluntarily shares with an AI character.
- Insights inferred from how a user interacts with AI-generated profiles or content.
Meta said that, beginning December 16, 2025, interactions with its generative AI features would be used as a signal for personalizing content and advertising recommendations in most regions. Its example was that a conversation about hiking could lead to more hiking-related posts, groups, recommendations or ads. Meta said certain sensitive topics would not be used to show people ads and that controls such as Ads Preferences and feed controls would remain available.
This does not mean that private AI conversations are automatically published to a feed. It does mean that AI interactions can become another personalization signal. Meta outlines the policy and stated controls in its recommendations announcement.
Why AI social profiles could matter
Possible benefits
- Always-available characters for entertainment, education or role-play.
- Multilingual responses and accessibility support.
- Automated answers to common creator or business questions.
- New storytelling formats and personalized creative experiences.
- Customer support that can handle routine requests.
Possible costs
- Feeds crowded with inexpensive, repetitive synthetic content.
- Audiences diverted from human creators.
- Impersonation of creators, public figures or ordinary users.
- Undisclosed commercial influence or synthetic endorsements.
- Artificial popularity signals and coordinated engagement.
- Emotional dependency, scams or manipulative conversations.
- Recommendation systems rewarding volume rather than originality.
These are foreseeable risks, not proof that Meta’s proposed accounts have carried out every abuse listed. The 2023 experiment nevertheless showed why humanlike presentation, disclosure and response quality matter: people may treat a profile as a personality even when its answers are unreliable.

Creators could benefit from constant fan interaction, translation, automated answers and new forms of storytelling. But they also face the risk that an AI version of their identity competes with their own work or is copied without meaningful consent.
Before using an AI character, creators should establish who controls its model, voice, likeness, posts and messages. They should also ask whether they can approve outgoing content, set message boundaries, disclose sponsorships, delete conversation data and permanently remove the persona. The reviewed Meta announcements do not establish that every one of these controls will be available.
Practical advice for users
- Treat an AI label as disclosure, not as a guarantee that the account is accurate or safe.
- Do not share passwords, financial information, identity documents or highly sensitive personal details with an AI character.
- Verify important claims through independent sources.
- Check whether a profile is connected to a real person, company or organization.
- Be cautious about emotional pressure, sudden popularity, urgent requests and commercial recommendations.
- Use block, mute, report and feed-control tools when content or interactions feel misleading.
- Remember that an absent AI label does not prove human authorship.
The bottom line
Meta’s AI-account story is real, but the headline needs precision. Meta tested 28 official AI-character profiles in 2023, removed them in January 2025, and later described a future in which AI characters could function like social accounts. As of August 18, 2026, that does not amount to a confirmed broad rollout of autonomous AI users.
The larger and more immediate development is AI becoming embedded across the social platform: in assistants, support, search, recommendations, feed content and creative tools. Whether AI profiles become useful additions or damage trust will depend on transparent identity labels, meaningful user controls, strong moderation and clear accountability.
