No public comments cited here substantiate a feud between Steve Carell and Ricky Gervais. Carell called Gervais “really sweet” after Gervais supported his decision to leave The Office; Gervais, in turn, praised Carell’s performance and said the American series was “fantastic.” Those remarks point to professional respect, though they cannot establish every detail of the actors’ private relationship.
What did Carell and Gervais say about each other?
Gervais supported Carell’s decision to leave
When Carell announced in 2010 that he was leaving the American The Office, Gervais sent him a supportive email. Carell described the message as “really sweet.” Gervais said he was expected to persuade Carell to stay, but instead believed Carell was doing the right thing by moving on. He joked about the financial upside of syndication before endorsing the decision. ABC News reported their comments on July 20, 2010.
Gervais praised the American series and Carell’s role
In a 2006 interview with NPR’s Fresh Air, Gervais called the American adaptation “fantastic” and “amazing.” He also drew a clear line between its lead character and his own: “Steve Carell, he’s playing a different character. He’s playing Michael Scott, not David Brent, and nor should he.”
Why are Michael Scott and David Brent compared?
The comparison is built into the shows’ history: Gervais and Stephen Merchant created the British original, while Carell starred as Michael Scott in the American version. That connection explains why viewers compare the performances, but it does not establish that the actors saw one another as rivals. ABC News’ 2007 account identifies the creators of the British series and Carell’s role in the U.S. adaptation.

Gervais described different characters and settings
Gervais characterized Michael as somewhat slicker, smarter, and possibly nicer than David Brent. Brent, by contrast, was more troubled and seemed closer to a breakdown. Gervais also said the American and English office environments differ, so their central characters should differ too. His comments frame the performances as distinct interpretations shaped by character and setting—not as a contest between actors.
Carell chose not to imitate Gervais
Carell said he avoided watching the BBC series before filming because he wanted a “clean slate.” As he explained, “I’d try to emulate Ricky Gervais, and I wanted to bring a clean slate.” The Television Academy reported his explanation in 2009. Avoiding the original was a creative choice about building his own performance, not evidence that he disliked Gervais.

No. The public remarks establish mutual professional respect in the moments documented: Gervais backed Carell’s departure and praised the adaptation, while Carell spoke warmly about Gervais. They do not prove that the actors never disagreed or reveal the full state of their private relationship. Fan claims that they “fell out” or “don’t talk” remain speculation unless supported by reliable, on-record evidence.
