African pop is not one genre or a single list of stars. It spans distinct regional scenes, from West African Afrobeats to South African amapiano and styles such as benga, bongo flava, soukous and North African shaabi and chaabi. Start with the artists and songs below as discovery points, not as a definitive ranking: the sources provide more detail on Afrobeats than on current artists across every region.

What does “African pop” include?

“African pop” is best understood as a broad discovery label for popular music from across the continent, not the name of one shared sound. The styles mentioned here have different histories and musical ingredients, and a cross-border collaboration can bring more than one scene together.

Afrobeats, for example, is described by Official Charts as a broad West African pop sound that can draw on rap, bashment, dancehall, R&B and electronic dance music. That breadth is one reason artists grouped under the term may sound quite different from one another.

Which West African Afrobeats artists should you try?

For an entry into contemporary Afrobeats, try Rema, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, Shallipopi, Ruger and Bloody Civilian. They are examples, not a ranked list or a claim that one sound represents all West African pop. Spotify’s Afrobeats discovery coverage also points readers toward an Afrobeats hub and the African Heat playlist.

For a song-led starting point, Rema’s “Calm Down” became a notable international breakthrough. The Associated Press reported in February 2024 that the 2022 song, in its version featuring Selena Gomez, was the first track led by an African artist to reach one billion Spotify streams. AP also reported that it spent a record 64 weeks on Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart. Those milestones describe one song’s reach, not the breadth of African pop.

West African popular music extends beyond today’s Afrobeats names. Official Charts’ history includes earlier milestones and artists such as MI Abaga, Naeto C, Sarkodie, P-Square and D’banj. Highlife and fuji are other West African styles identified in AP’s cross-regional coverage.

How is Afrobeat different from Afrobeats?

The similar names refer to different styles. Afrobeats is a broad label for contemporary West African pop and its mix of influences. Afrobeat, usually without the final “s,” is the style pioneered by Fela Kuti and developed in the 1960s. Official Charts describes it as big-band music influenced by afro-funk and jazz, often with political themes. The terms are not interchangeable.

What other African pop sounds and artists are worth exploring?

The examples below are a regional map rather than a complete directory. AP identifies these scenes and styles, but its coverage does not establish a current leading-artist roster for every region.

Region Sound or scene Starting point
Southern Africa Amapiano blends South African kwaito with African jazz, house music and soulful vocals, according to AP. Try Tyla’s “Water,” which AP linked to amapiano’s rising international profile. Davido and South African artist Musa Keys’ “Unavailable” is another listening point: South African DJ Nafy Dread described it to AP as a possible example of an Afrobeats–amapiano cross-border collaboration.
East Africa Benga in Kenya and bongo flava in Tanzania. AP names the styles, but the cited coverage does not support a current artist shortlist for either scene.
Central Africa Soukous. AP identifies the style but does not provide a current artist shortlist in the cited passage.
North Africa Shaabi and chaabi. AP names these popular styles but does not establish a current artist shortlist in the cited passage.

These gaps are a reason to treat the table as a starting map, not as a statement that the named Afrobeats artists are more important than artists in less-covered scenes.

What do Afrobeats’ streaming milestones tell you?

They show the scale of Afrobeats on a particular platform and during specific periods—not the size of all African music listening. Spotify reported more than 13 billion Afrobeats streams on its service in 2022. In a separate statement about 2023, Spotify’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, said the genre was played for more than 223 million hours and had over 7.1 billion streams on Spotify. These platform-reported figures refer to different periods and measures; they should not be treated as a like-for-like comparison or a count of all African music.

Rank #4

AP reported in February 2024 that Spotify had seen Afrobeats streaming grow by more than 500% since 2017; that is Spotify’s platform-specific figure as reported by AP, not an independent measurement of the entire music market. AP also reported, citing IFPI’s Global Music Report 2023, that Sub-Saharan Africa was the fastest-growing region for recorded-music revenues in 2022. The cited AP passage gives no percentage for that growth.

How can you find more music beyond a familiar playlist?

  • Choose a starting sound. If you want a broad West African pop entry, begin with Afrobeats. If you want a different regional direction, look for amapiano, benga, bongo flava, soukous, shaabi or chaabi.
  • Follow the collaboration. “Unavailable,” with Davido and Musa Keys, offers a route from Afrobeats toward amapiano; one track can connect scenes without standing in for either whole genre.
  • Use local context as well as playlists. A playlist can help you sample songs, but artist and scene coverage varies across languages and countries. Music In Africa Foundation’s 2021–22 annual report describes coverage and artist profiles across countries while noting challenges including language, journalism and academic availability, censorship and industry development.

Spotify’s discovery hub and African Heat playlist are practical Afrobeats leads, rather than a comprehensive guide to every African pop scene. Exploring additional local coverage is especially useful when you want to move beyond the regions and artists best represented in international reporting.
