Some Spotify Premium users say they are seeing or hearing ads, but the reports do not establish that Spotify has broadly started inserting ordinary ads into Premium music playback. Spotify’s U.S. plans page still describes Premium as offering “ad-free music listening.” That is a narrower promise than an ad-free experience across every podcast, video, recommendation, and screen in the app.
The distinction matters: a podcast sponsorship or video ad is not necessarily evidence that Premium music has become ad-supported. If conventional ads interrupt songs, however, check your plan and account before assuming it is intended.
What Spotify Premium promises
Spotify’s U.S. Premium page currently uses the phrase “ad-free music listening.” It does not describe every podcast, video, recommendation surface, or promotional message as ad-free. In other words, ad-free music and ad-free Spotify are not interchangeable claims.

Spotify separately describes its free music experience as ad-supported. Its paid plans also include features such as offline listening and full playback control; the exact plan features and availability depend on the plan and market. U.S. prices displayed during a check on August 16, 2026, were $12.99 a month for Individual, $6.99 for Student, $18.99 for Duo, and $21.99 for Family, after any displayed introductory offer. Four different things people may call “ads”
| What you encounter | What it may mean |
|---|---|
| An audio ad between songs | This is the clearest sign of a possible Premium entitlement, billing, app, or account-state problem. The available evidence does not establish a broad policy change putting ordinary music ads into active Premium accounts. |
| A sponsor message in a podcast | It may be recorded into the episode by its creator, inserted dynamically by a delivery or monetization system, or supplied through another arrangement. Premium’s stated music benefit does not by itself establish that every podcast is ad-free. |
| A sponsored or promotional Home-screen item | Users have reported placements they describe as sponsored recommendations. Without a formal explanation, it is unclear whether a particular item is paid advertising, Spotify promotion, an experiment, or an editorial recommendation. |
| A video ad or visual promotion | Spotify’s April 9, 2026 announcement about video controls said users would still see video ads and some Canvas-like visuals on audio ads. This is distinct from an audio ad interrupting a song, and the experience may vary by content, device, market, and rollout. |
Spotify’s video-controls announcement covered Premium, Basic, and free listeners. It is evidence that Premium does not necessarily remove every video-related ad or visual; it should not be stretched into a claim that all Premium users see the same ads everywhere.
Users have also described sponsored Home-screen placements, including in a Reddit report. That is an anecdotal account, not confirmation of a platform-wide change or Spotify’s classification of the placement.
Why podcast ads can remain
Podcast advertising can work differently from advertising inserted between music tracks. A host may read a sponsor message that is part of the episode, or an ad may be dynamically selected and inserted at a break. Video versions of shows can add another kind of advertising or visual promotion. The specific mechanism depends on the show and how it is delivered; it is not safe to assume every podcast ad is baked into the file or that Spotify inserted every one.

A useful clue is whether the same ad appears at the same point in a downloaded copy of an episode. That can suggest the message is part of the episode, though it is not conclusive. Ads that vary between listens or listeners may be dynamically served. Either way, a podcast sponsorship is different from a conventional ad interrupting a music playlist.
Some users have reported podcast ads despite Premium, as in these user reports and discussion of podcast interruptions. These reports illustrate what listeners are encountering, but they do not establish Spotify’s policy for every show or market.

Could it be an account glitch?
Possibly. A March 2026 report described Basic-plan users whose mobile apps appeared to show Free and played ads even though their account overview showed Premium. That points to account recognition or entitlement synchronization as a possible cause in those cases. It is not evidence that all current complaints share the same cause, nor an admission that Spotify intentionally added ads to Premium music.
Spotify’s Investor Day discussion of advertising across music, podcasts, and video concerned its ad-supported business; it does not demonstrate that Premium music became ad-supported. See the company’s Investor Day remarks and recap.

How to check what is happening
- Pin down where the interruption occurred. Was it between songs, inside a podcast, on Home or Search, in a video, or through a car, TV, console, or speaker integration? Note whether the audio came from Spotify directly or an integration.
- Check the account that is actually signed in. Verify the email address, plan name, and next billing date on your account page. Spotify’s support guidance directs subscribers to their account for plan and billing information. Check whether payment failed, a trial ended, or billing is handled by Apple, Google, a carrier, or another partner. Spotify’s paid-subscription terms recognize that subscriptions may be supplied directly or through an applicable third party.
- Refresh the app’s account state. Sign out on the affected device, close and reopen Spotify, then sign back in to the account that owns the subscription. Update the app and check the plan again. These steps are diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix.
- Compare playback. Try ordinary songs or a downloaded album, then test the same account in the web player or on another device. If only a podcast contains ads, that is consistent with the narrower “ad-free music” wording. If ordinary ads interrupt songs, the case for an entitlement or billing problem is stronger.
- Record the details before contacting support. Save the time and date, plan shown, device and app version, billing provider, and screenshots of any conflicting account or app labels. Note whether the interruption was between tracks or inside a podcast.
If the account page says Premium but music ads continue across devices, or the app shows Free while billing is current, contact Spotify Support with that evidence. Avoid creating a new account or canceling before confirming which account is being billed and documenting the problem.
Should you switch services?
First identify the problem you want to solve. Switching music services may make sense if you consistently hear ordinary ads during music despite an active, correctly recognized Premium account and support cannot resolve it. A different music subscription will not necessarily remove creator-read sponsorships from podcasts you continue to hear elsewhere, and changing plans within Spotify may not eliminate podcast or video advertising. Compare alternatives against the specific use—music, podcasts, or video—rather than treating every ad-like message as the same issue.
Quick Recap
Spotify’s current official wording remains the most useful guide: Premium is marketed as ad-free for music. Reports about podcasts, sponsored recommendations, and video are real user experiences, but they do not amount to verified evidence of a general return of conventional ads to Premium song playback.
