Spoilers for all four episodes of Adolescence. Jamie killed Katie. Episode 1 makes that clear when detectives show Jamie and his father CCTV footage of him stabbing her seven times in a parking lot. The series’ ending is not a reveal about who killed Katie; it is about Jamie’s decision to plead guilty and the grief that decision leaves with his family.
What happened to Katie?
The CCTV footage shown near the end of Episode 1 establishes that Jamie stabbed Katie. The series does not offer a competing account or leave her killer unidentified.
That early confirmation shifts the story from a “whodunit” to what its creators describe as a “why-done-it.” The remaining episodes explore Jamie’s mindset and relationships, as well as the consequences for his family, rather than building toward a different answer about Katie’s death. Netflix’s Episode 4 explainer discusses the creators’ framing of the story.
Why did Jamie kill Katie?
The series points to several influences, not one definitive cause. Netflix’s explainer describes Jamie’s low self-esteem, his perception that he was being bullied, and his exposure to online incel propaganda as parts of the picture. Katie calls him an incel publicly on Instagram; Jamie feels humiliated and enraged, and the stabbing follows.

These details explain how the show presents Jamie’s thinking and the circumstances around the crime. They are not a diagnosis, proof that any one factor caused the murder, or an excuse for it. The series examines how Jamie responds to his world while keeping his responsibility for Katie’s death clear.
What does Jamie’s guilty plea mean for the ending?
Episode 4 takes place 13 months after Jamie’s arrest, as his family tries to mark Eddie’s birthday. During a call, Jamie tells his father, Eddie, that he will change his plea to guilty. Netflix’s account of the finale describes this as the moment that breaks the family’s remaining hope that events might turn out differently. Director Philip Barantini likewise describes the plea as forcing them to accept that there is nothing more they can do.

The plea does not reveal a new version of Katie’s death. It makes Jamie’s established responsibility harder for his family to live with: they must face the consequences without the possibility, however fragile, that the case will end another way.
Why does Eddie tuck in Jamie’s teddy bear?
After the call, Eddie kisses Jamie’s teddy bear and apologizes to it as if he were speaking to his son. Barantini has said the bear is the only thing Eddie has left that he can touch and associate with Jamie. The gesture gives Eddie a physical point of connection at a moment when he cannot reach his son in the same way.

The moment also carries regret. Stephen Graham connects Eddie’s final conversation with recognizing that he should have spent more time with Jamie. Barantini has said the original script had Eddie get into Jamie’s bed and pull up the covers; during rehearsal, the filmmakers settled on tucking in the bear instead. Together, these choices make the final image an expression of grief, love, and lost time—not evidence that Eddie caused the murder or that the truth about Katie is uncertain. Graham’s interview with Netflix Tudum discusses the closing scene.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Adolescence based on a true story?
No. Netflix Tudum says Jamie’s specific story is fictional and is not based on a real person or event. Stephen Graham has said that news reports involving boys and knife crime helped prompt the creators to explore male rage, alienation, and how young people encounter information. That inspiration makes the series a fictional story shaped by real-world concerns, not a dramatization of a particular case. Netflix’s feature on whether Adolescence is a true story explains that distinction.
