It sends Athena and Hen into a space emergency while the 118 tackles falling debris on Earth—and makes Chimney’s choice to amputate a trapped woman’s leg the episode’s defining test of leadership. The space disaster is new territory for the series; the rescue dilemma feels much more familiar. That contrast is compelling, but not entirely comfortable.
What happens in “The Sky is Falling”?
ABC’s episode synopsis sets up two connected emergencies: Athena and Hen face growing danger in space, while the 118 helps people caught in a geostorm and falling debris. The story continues a larger crisis rather than resolving the space peril in one episode.
Aboard the Inara, the fire is extinguished, but the crew loses an emergency hatch and the craft is left exposed. Their suits have limited oxygen. On Earth, Maddie and Karen work to restore contact, and Cammie from 9-1-1: Nashville helps relay a call between Hen and Los Angeles. That crossover connection has a practical role in the rescue effort, not just a cameo function.
The crew tries to reach the International Space Station and makes the jump, only to find the station damaged by debris. Another impact at the end leaves the danger unresolved.

What happens to the 118 on Earth?
The 118 responds to a debris-related disaster that includes a woman trapped inside a flooded subway train. With time and options running out, interim captain Chimney amputates her leg to free her. TV Insider’s October 23 recap says Eddie offers to take over, but Chimney accepts responsibility for the decision.
That scene gives the episode its most consequential ground-level crisis. The emergency is not only about whether the team can extract the woman; it is also about who must make an irreversible call when the available choices are all terrible.

How do Athena and Hen get back to Earth?
They do not make it back to Earth in this episode. The crew reaches the damaged International Space Station, but the closing impact leaves their situation in danger rather than providing a safe return. The episode’s space plot therefore ends on a cliffhanger, not a completed rescue.
Why does Chimney’s decision feel like a callback?
But Why Tho? connects Chimney’s decision to a Season 2 earthquake rescue in which Bobby and the team saved a trapped person’s leg. The situations do not have the same outcome: this time, Chimney chooses amputation to get the woman out. That contrast makes the earlier rescue a useful point of comparison, not a claim that the show has an official rule or stated “oldest tradition.”

Read that way, the episode uses a familiar 9-1-1 kind of dilemma—rescuers forced to weigh physical harm against the chance of survival—inside a much less familiar spectacle. Chimney’s fear of failing Bobby’s example gives the choice another layer: he is not simply applying a precedent, but taking responsibility when the precedent cannot settle the question for him.
Does the space spectacle work?
Katey Stoetzel’s review for But Why Tho? argues that the space premise is most effective when the story keeps its focus on character relationships. That is a helpful way to understand the episode’s uneven balance. The Inara, limited oxygen, damaged station and repeated impacts give the crisis scale; Chimney’s decision gives it emotional specificity.

The contrast between novelty and continuity is the episode’s central tension. A space emergency promises a new visual and logistical setting for 9-1-1, while the Earthbound rescue returns to the series’ recognizable interest in impossible choices and team responsibility. The crossover call also links the two worlds through a concrete rescue function. But the space plot is still unfinished here, so its ultimate payoff cannot be judged from this episode alone.
