Spoilers for all four episodes of Netflix’s Adolescence.
Adolescence does not end with a mystery about who killed Katie Leonard. Episode 1 shows the answer: Jamie Miller stabbed her seven times in a car park. The series’ real question is how an apparently ordinary family arrived at that catastrophe—and what remains after the murder is known.

Did Jamie kill Katie?
Yes. Jamie killed his classmate, Katie Leonard. Near the end of the first episode, police show Jamie’s father, Eddie, CCTV footage of Jamie stabbing Katie seven times in a parking lot.
That revelation removes the usual whodunit structure. Adolescence is instead a “why-done-it”: a drama about the influences, emotions and failures of understanding surrounding the crime. Jamie’s repeated insistence that he is innocent does not mean another person committed the murder. His denials reflect his fear, disbelief and inability to accept the finality of what he has done.

Why did Jamie kill Katie?
The series deliberately avoids reducing the murder to one explanation. Jamie is insecure, has low self-esteem and believes he is being bullied. He has also absorbed online incel and misogynistic propaganda, which gives him a damaging framework for interpreting rejection, status and relationships with girls.
Katie’s public Instagram post accusing Jamie of being an “incel” humiliates him shortly before the killing. For Jamie, the post becomes an unbearable public wound. His anger, existing insecurity and online worldview combine in the events that follow.
However, the show does not present internet ideology as an automatic cause of violence, or as an excuse for Jamie’s decision. It shows how such material can interact with a vulnerable teenager’s fears and resentments while leaving responsibility for the murder with Jamie.
Why does Jamie keep asking Eddie to believe him?
Jamie’s pleas to Eddie are about more than the criminal investigation. He wants his father to keep seeing him as a good, safe and lovable son, even after Eddie knows what happened.

His conversations with Eddie—and with psychologist Briony—become volatile because he is trying to protect the image of himself that existed before Katie’s death. He also wants Eddie to reassure him that he is still loved.

- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
Eddie cannot give him that reassurance in the uncomplicated way Jamie wants. The father still loves his son, but the person he thought Jamie was has become impossible to separate from the crime.
What happens in Episode 4?
The final episode takes place 13 months after Jamie’s arrest, on Eddie’s 50th birthday. Jamie remains in custody and sends his father a birthday card. Eddie, Manda and Lisa try to behave normally, but the family’s ordinary routine cannot survive unchanged.
The vandalism of Eddie’s van, followed by an encounter with a teenager connected to it, brings the family’s continuing isolation and anger to the surface. The crime has not ended simply because Jamie has been arrested; its consequences have entered every part of the family’s life.

During a phone call, Jamie tells Eddie that he has decided to change his plea to guilty. The call ends before Eddie can properly respond. This is presented as Jamie’s first clear moment of certainty. He now appears to understand what he did and the future that may follow from admitting it.
Does Jamie go to prison?
The series does not show Jamie’s trial, sentencing or later life in prison. The final confirmed development is his decision to plead guilty.
Rank #3
That means the show does not establish a specific sentence onscreen. Claims that Adolescence gives Jamie a life sentence, or shows exactly how long he will be incarcerated, go beyond the ending. A guilty plea is not the same thing as a depicted sentence, and the drama ends before the court determines Jamie’s punishment.
What does Eddie’s final scene mean?
After Jamie’s phone call, Eddie goes into his son’s bedroom. The room has remained largely untouched. Eddie breaks down on Jamie’s bed, then places Jamie’s teddy bear under the covers and kisses it as if he were tucking in his son.
He apologizes and says, “I should have done better.”
The moment expresses Eddie’s parental guilt, not legal responsibility for Katie’s murder. The creators do not argue that Eddie or the rest of the family caused Jamie’s actions. Instead, Eddie and Manda are left questioning what they missed, including how deeply Jamie had withdrawn into an online world.
The bedroom carries a second meaning. It is the space where Jamie encountered the online material that helped shape his worldview. By ending there, the series places two versions of Jamie side by side: the child Eddie remembers and the teenager who committed the crime. Eddie is mourning both his son’s absence and the collapse of his understanding of who that son was.

What happens to Eddie, Manda and Lisa?
The finale widens its focus from Jamie’s arrest to the family’s long-term damage. Eddie and Manda consider whether moving away might give them a fresh start. Lisa understands that leaving would not erase the past.
Lisa, in particular, must continue living as the sister of a boy who killed a classmate. She has her own future, but she will always be connected to Jamie’s crime. Her position makes clear that the consequences are not limited to the person who committed the murder or the family of the victim.
The family ultimately remains together. This is not a happy resolution or a sign that the damage has been repaired. It is an acceptance that they must live with what happened instead of physically escaping it. Jamie is still alive and still loved, but the family’s previous idea of him—and of themselves—has been permanently destroyed.

The closing song is “Through the Eyes of a Child” by Aurora. Director Philip Barantini said the voice heard in the final moments belongs to Emilia Holliday, the actor who plays Katie.
That choice keeps Katie present in the final seconds. Although the story follows Jamie and his family, the ending does not allow the victim to disappear behind the offender’s emotional crisis. Katie’s death remains the central loss around which every other consequence turns.

The ending explained in one sentence
Jamie is confirmed as Katie’s killer, remains in custody, tells Eddie he will plead guilty, and disappears from the series before sentencing; Eddie’s final breakdown shows him accepting both the reality of Jamie’s crime and the loss of the son he thought he knew.
FAQ
Is Jamie guilty in Adolescence?
Yes. CCTV footage shows Jamie stabbing Katie Leonard seven times. His claims of innocence reflect his denial and inability to process what he has done, not evidence that someone else committed the murder.
What caused Jamie to kill Katie?
The series presents several contributing factors: Jamie’s insecurity, low self-esteem, belief that he was being bullied, humiliation after Katie called him an “incel” on Instagram, and exposure to online incel and misogynistic ideas. It does not offer one simple cause or treat the online material as an excuse.
What does Jamie decide to do at the end?
During a phone call with Eddie, Jamie says he has decided to change his plea to guilty. The call ends before Eddie can respond fully.
Does Adolescence show Jamie’s sentence?
No. The series ends before the trial and sentencing. It does not show a life sentence or give a specific prison term.
The Bottom Line
Adolescence ends with certainty about the crime but not about Jamie’s legal future. Jamie killed Katie, remains in custody and decides to plead guilty. The emotional conclusion belongs to Eddie and the rest of the family, who must accept that love cannot restore the son and brother they believed they knew—or undo the harm done to Katie and her family.
