Spider-Man: No Way Home is a 2021 superhero film that turns Spider-Man’s cinematic history into part of its story. Directed by Jon Watts, it is the third film in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy after Homecoming and Far From Home. Its multiverse plot brings Holland’s Peter Parker together with villains and alternate versions of Spider-Man from earlier film series.
Spoiler warning: The story details, ending, and post-credits scenes are discussed below.
What is Spider-Man: No Way Home about?
The film begins immediately after Spider-Man: Far From Home, in which Mysterio reveals Peter Parker’s secret identity to the world. Peter asks Doctor Strange to cast a spell that will make everyone forget that he is Spider-Man.
Peter’s repeated attempts to preserve specific relationships interfere with the spell. Instead of simply removing knowledge of Spider-Man’s identity, the damaged spell opens a breach between realities. People connected to other versions of Spider-Man begin arriving in Peter’s universe.

- When Dr. Strange?s spell to restore Spider-Man?s identity goes awry, Peter is forced to overcome his greatest challenge yet.
Among them are Norman Osborn, also known as the Green Goblin; Doctor Octopus; Electro; Lizard; and Sandman. These characters come from the continuities associated with earlier Spider-Man films. The problem is not merely to defeat them. Doctor Strange explains that many of them are destined to die fighting Spider-Man in their own realities, creating a moral question for Peter: should they be sent back to those deaths, or can their fates be changed?
The cast and the three Spider-Men
Tom Holland plays Peter Parker, with Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds. Benedict Cumberbatch returns as Doctor Strange, while Jon Favreau plays Happy Hogan and Marisa Tomei plays Aunt May.
The returning villains connect the film to previous Spider-Man franchises:
| Actor | Character | Connection |
|---|---|---|
| Willem Dafoe | Norman Osborn / Green Goblin | Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films |
| Alfred Molina | Doctor Octopus | Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films |
| Jamie Foxx | Electro | The Amazing Spider-Man 2 |
| Rhys Ifans | Lizard | The Amazing Spider-Man |
| Thomas Haden Church | Sandman | Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films |
The film’s major crossover arrives when Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appear as alternate-universe versions of Peter Parker. Their involvement is not just a brief cameo. Each Spider-Man offers a different perspective on responsibility, loss, failure, and what it means to keep helping people after personal tragedy.

The multiverse is the film’s most visible piece of spectacle, but its emotional purpose is more important than its mechanics. The returning characters allow No Way Home to revisit unresolved moments from earlier Spider-Man films while giving Holland’s Peter a crisis of his own.
Peter initially believes that curing the villains is the right thing to do. Doctor Octopus is separated from the influence of his mechanical arms, and Electro’s powers are treated as a problem that might be reversed. Peter’s plan is interrupted by the Green Goblin, whose violence causes the death of Aunt May.

- When Dr. Strange?s spell to restore Spider-Man?s identity goes awry, Peter is forced to overcome his greatest challenge yet.
Aunt May’s final advice—“With great power, there must also come great responsibility”—becomes the film’s moral turning point. Peter’s grief pushes him toward revenge, but the other two Spider-Men help him understand that refusing to kill the Green Goblin is part of the responsibility he has chosen.
The ending explained
During the final battle at the Statue of Liberty, Holland’s Peter, Maguire’s Peter, and Garfield’s Peter fight the villains together. They cure the remaining enemies, including the Green Goblin, and begin closing the multiverse breach.

However, the damage cannot be repaired without a greater sacrifice. Peter asks Doctor Strange to cast a second spell that will make everyone forget Peter Parker himself. This is broader than making people forget that Peter is Spider-Man. MJ, Ned, Happy, and everyone else lose their personal memories of Peter.
After the spell, Peter visits MJ and Ned but decides not to restore their memories. He sees that MJ has recovered from her injuries and plans to tell her the truth, but changes his mind when he notices the promise she made to remember him. He chooses to protect her and Ned from further danger, even though it leaves him completely alone.
The final scenes show Peter beginning again in New York. He has made a new suit, found a small apartment, and continues fighting crime without the support network he once had. The ending turns the film’s title into a description of Peter’s condition: he has no way home to the life and relationships he knew before the spell.
Post-credits scenes
The theatrical version includes a Doctor Strange-related preview in its post-credits material. The extended release uses a different post-credits scene, so descriptions of the ending should identify which version is being discussed.

- Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter?s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks is quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury and step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever.
Why the film remains significant
Spider-Man: No Way Home works simultaneously as a continuation of Holland’s trilogy, a multiverse adventure, and a film about audience memory. The appearances of Maguire and Garfield acknowledge more than a decade of live-action Spider-Man movies, but the story does not rely only on recognition. It uses those earlier versions to show Peter Parker confronting different forms of grief and responsibility.
Its final choice also separates it from a conventional victory story. Peter saves the multiverse, but the price is the loss of his identity in the lives of the people closest to him. The result is a superhero film built around spectacle that ends on isolation, restraint, and the decision to keep doing the right thing without recognition.
