If you watch documentaries on YouTube regularly, Premium is less about removing a few interruptions and more about changing how the service works. Long films play without YouTube-served ads, lectures and interviews continue with the screen off, and downloads make a difference on flights, trains, and unreliable connections.
In the U.S., YouTube Premium costs $15.99 per month for one person, $26.99 per month for a family plan, or $159.99 per year for an individual annual plan. The annual option works out to about $13.33 per month—roughly $31.89 less than paying for 12 monthly subscriptions.
The short answer
YouTube Premium is worth it for frequent YouTube viewers, especially people who watch long documentaries, listen to interviews, or use YouTube on the move. Its value is strongest when you use several features together: ad-free playback, background listening, offline downloads, and YouTube Music Premium.
It is harder to justify if you watch only occasionally, already subscribe to another music service, or mainly want to remove ads from a few short videos. YouTube Premium Lite costs less, but it leaves important gaps for documentary and music viewers.

1. Documentaries play without YouTube-served ads
Premium removes the ads YouTube places before and during videos, along with third-party banner and search ads. The benefit follows your signed-in Google Account across phones, computers, compatible smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles.
This matters more with a 90-minute documentary than with a three-minute clip. Without Premium, a film can be interrupted several times, breaking its pacing and making it harder to follow an argument, interview, or sequence of events. Premium does not merely remove the opening advert; it removes YouTube-served interruptions throughout the viewing experience.
There are limits. Premium cannot remove a sponsor segment recorded by the creator, a product placement, a merchandise shelf, a channel-membership promotion, or a promotional link in the description. Ads and promotions may also appear during live events and on Primetime Channels.
Best for: viewers who watch YouTube every day or regularly watch long-form documentaries rather than short clips.
2. Background play turns documentaries into audio
Many documentaries work well as listening: history programs, investigative interviews, science explainers, news discussions, and long conversations. On the YouTube mobile app, Premium lets playback continue while you use another app or turn off the screen.
Background play is available in the YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids mobile apps where supported. It is not available in the YouTube Shorts player.

To change the setting in the YouTube app:
- Tap Profile picture.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Background & downloads.
- Select Background play.
- Choose Always on, Off, or Headphones or external speakers.
If it stops working, check that the app is signed in to the Premium account, the membership is active, the app is up to date, background data is allowed, and another app is not taking control of audio.
3. Downloads help with travel and unreliable internet
Premium members can download eligible videos to mobile devices and computers. On a computer, open the video’s watch page in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Opera and click Download. On Android, open the video in the YouTube app and tap Download.

These are not ordinary video files. Downloads are encrypted and can only be watched within the YouTube app or a supported YouTube experience. They do not appear as freely transferable files in your gallery or file manager. They generally work offline for up to 29 days, after which the device must reconnect so YouTube can verify that the video is still available. In some regions, the offline period is limited to 48 hours.
Useful controls are located at YouTube app → Profile picture → Settings → Background & downloads → Download quality. On supported Android devices, you can use an SD card through Profile picture → Settings → Background & downloads → Use SD card.

There is also a device limit: offline features can be used on up to 10 devices, with up to four device swaps allowed per year. Deleting and reinstalling the YouTube app can count as registering a new device. After the fourth swap, a new device may display “Sorry, this video can’t be taken offline.”
4. YouTube Music Premium is included
A full YouTube Premium subscription includes YouTube Music Premium. That makes the price easier to justify if you use YouTube for both documentaries and music.

To enable Smart Downloads in the YouTube Music app, tap Profile picture → Downloads → Menu → Settings, then turn on Smart Downloads.
Podcast listening is a less decisive reason to subscribe. Some podcast features, including background play and downloads for many podcasts, are available without Premium. YouTube Music users may also still hear ads in podcasts, and podcast creators can insert their own sponsorships.
5. Mobile multitasking is more practical
Premium supports picture-in-picture on supported mobile devices. This lets a video remain in a floating window while you read, answer messages, or browse another app—handy when following a documentary while checking a reference or taking notes.

On Android, check:
- Open YouTube app → Settings → Playback → Picture-in-Picture.
- If necessary, open Android Settings → Apps → YouTube → Picture-in-picture and allow the system permission.
Premium also adds mobile playback controls. While watching a video, tap Settings → Additional settings → Premium controls. Depending on the device and account, these can include larger controls, 10-second skipping, playback-speed controls, liking, saving for later, and Stable volume. YouTube says these controls are available on Android, iPhone, and tablets, but not yet on desktop.
6. The right plan can change the calculation
The headline individual price is not the only way to measure value.

A family plan can be good value when it is used legitimately. With all six places occupied, $26.99 works out to about $4.50 per person per month. YouTube requires members to live at the same address and performs an electronic household check every 30 days. It is not intended as a way to split a subscription with friends living elsewhere.

Lite is the sensible choice for someone who mainly watches general documentary channels and wants to pay less. Full Premium is better for viewers who also watch music content, rely on downloads, or want the complete set of playback features.
What Premium does not do
- It does not remove every promotion. Creator-read sponsorships, embedded product placements, merchandise prompts, and some live-event or Primetime Channel promotions can remain.
- Downloads are not permanent files. They require periodic verification and cannot be copied freely to another player.
- It does not make family sharing location-free. Household members must meet YouTube’s residential-address requirements.
- A VPN is not a risk-free pricing workaround. YouTube requires users to represent their country accurately. Misrepresenting location or bypassing availability restrictions can lead to cancellation.
Who should subscribe?
Premium is a strong fit if you:
- Watch YouTube documentaries several times a week.
- Dislike interruptions during long films and interviews.
- Listen to documentary audio with your phone locked.
- Travel often or regularly deal with poor internet.
- Want YouTube Music without paying for a separate music subscription.
- Can use a family plan with people in your household.
It is probably not worth the full price if you watch only a few videos each month, already pay for Spotify or another music service, rarely use mobile playback, and do not need offline viewing. Premium Lite may be enough if your only priority is fewer ads on general videos and you can accept ads on music, Shorts, search, and browsing.

At $15.99 per month, however, occasional viewers should consider Premium Lite or stay with the free service. The annual plan improves the value for a committed individual, while the family plan is compelling only for people who genuinely share a household.
