She is alive, but has no memory of her captivity; her husband has remarried, and her son has grown up without her. The series ran for three seasons and is complete.
What is Absentia about?
Emily Byrne is an FBI agent pursuing a notorious Boston serial killer when she vanishes. After she is declared dead, her husband, Nick Durand, and their young son try to build a life without her. Six years later, Emily is found alive, but her memory of the missing years is gone. Returning to her family means confronting a home that has changed—and a new wave of murders in which she becomes implicated.
That setup drives the series’ mix of criminal investigation and psychological suspense: Emily is trying to understand what happened to her while others question who she is now. Amazon’s original announcement describes the premise and Emily’s return; Netflix Tudum’s season-one explainer provides a fuller account of the opening mystery. How many seasons are there, and is season 4 coming?
Absentia has three seasons. Netflix Tudum says the series ended with season 3 and there will not be a fourth season. The finale premiered on Amazon Prime in 2020, according to Tudum’s November 2025 explainer. View it as a completed three-season story, not a series awaiting renewal.
What happens in season 3?
Sony’s official season-three synopsis moves the story beyond the initial return-home mystery. Emily is nearing the end of an FBI suspension and trying to be a mother to Flynn when an international criminal case puts her family and Nick’s safety at risk. She pursues Nick with Special Agent Cal Isaac and former FBI instructor Rowena Kincade, taking the story far from Boston. This is the studio’s synopsis of the season, rather than an independent assessment. Read Sony’s season-three synopsis

Where can you watch Absentia?
Availability depends on your country and can change. Sony’s title page promotes season 3 as streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Netflix Tudum said on November 26, 2025 that all three seasons were streaming on Netflix. However, the Prime Video season-two listing consulted on October 4, 2026 says the episodes are no longer available in the viewer’s region on Prime Video—an example of why a platform mention is not a guarantee of local access.
Check the title in your local Netflix and Prime Video catalogs before subscribing or deciding where to watch. A platform listing alone does not establish that the series is available in every market, included with every subscription tier, or offered under the same terms everywhere.
