About My Father is a scripted 2023 comedy about a hairdresser father meeting his son’s wealthy future in-laws. Sebastian Maniscalco co-wrote and stars in the film, with Robert De Niro as his father, Salvo. It is inspired by Maniscalco’s life, but it is not a documentary or a verified account of specific real events.
What is About My Father about?
Sebastian plans to propose to his American fiancée, Ellie. At her encouragement, he brings his immigrant father, Salvo, a hairdresser, to spend a weekend with Ellie’s wealthy and eccentric family. The meeting sets up a culture-clash comedy as father and son encounter a very different family world. This spoiler-light premise does not require knowing how the weekend ends.

Is About My Father based on Sebastian Maniscalco’s life?
The film is described as drawing on Maniscalco’s life, and its family-centered setup reflects that inspiration. It is nevertheless a scripted comedy co-written by Maniscalco and Austen Earl—not a documentary. The available film listings do not establish which events or characters are literal autobiography, so the story should not be treated as a factual biography.
