In ABC News accounts published in 2019, she described the role her children played in encouraging her to speak, the challenge of asking for help, and how other bereaved people shaped her decision to tell her story.
What Jennifer Ashton shared about her family’s loss
ABC News reported that Robert Ashton was Jennifer Ashton’s ex-husband and the father of their two children, Chloe and Alex. He died by suicide in February 2017, according to ABC’s April 2019 report on her podcast. Ashton’s account centers on what the loss was like for her and her family; the cited coverage does not establish why Rob died.
In a first-person ABC News article, Ashton described the prospect of discussing the loss publicly as terrifying. She wrote that Chloe and Alex encouraged her to use her voice for people grieving similar losses. She also recalled hearing from people bereaved by suicide after a public appearance in 2018; those responses helped prompt her to write about the experience.
Grief, uncertainty, and asking for help
An excerpt from Ashton’s memoir describes the shock and unanswered questions that followed Rob’s death. She wondered whether the divorce had caused him pain, but the passage does not answer that question. It acknowledges that the family could not know his private experience. Her reflection should not be read as evidence that the divorce caused his death.

Ashton also wrote about the difficulty of moving from a professional role helping others to accepting help herself: “As a doctor, it is much easier for me to be the one helping than it is for me to ask for help.” She described the importance of allowing herself to feel grief, writing: “I realized, with the help of mental health professionals, that in order to heal, you need to feel.” These are her reflections on her own experience, not universal clinical instructions.

The memoir
Ashton shared a fuller account in her 2019 book, Life After Suicide: Finding Courage, Comfort & Community After Unthinkable Loss. ABC News published an excerpt on May 7, 2019, and said the book was available that day. In her May 23 article, Ashton said proceeds from book sales would be donated to Vibrant Emotional Health and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. That describes her 2019 statement, not a verified current donation arrangement.
The podcast
ABC described Life After Suicide as an eight-episode podcast hosted by Ashton, with conversations involving people affected by sudden loss and suicide bereavement as well as specialists. The description comes from an April 2019 article; it does not establish whether the series is currently available.
