ABC announced on 17 July 2024 that Bruce McAvaney OAM would join its commentary team for the Paris Olympic Games. The role was part of ABC radio coverage made possible by a sublicensing agreement with Nine—not an appointment to Nine’s own commentary team. The Games and the listening arrangements described here are historical.
What ABC announced about Bruce McAvaney
ABC’s 17 July announcement said McAvaney would join its Paris Games commentary team. The broadcaster traced his Olympic work to Los Angeles in 1984 and highlighted his call of Cathy Freeman’s 400-metre gold-medal race at the Sydney 2000 Games. McAvaney said the Olympics was “the ultimate event for an Australian sports broadcaster” and that the ABC opportunity meant a great deal to him. ABC’s announcement contains the full statement and team details.
ABC News had reported the appointment on 15 July, describing McAvaney as a longtime Seven Network broadcaster who had called AFL and led Seven’s Olympics coverage. Its report explained that the ABC role followed a radio-rights sublicensing arrangement between Nine and ABC; McAvaney had not been included in Nine’s broadcast team. ABC News’ report provides that context.
Why ABC had Olympic radio coverage
Nine sublicensed radio rights to ABC, allowing ABC Local Radio to carry the Paris Games across its regional network and in Adelaide, Darwin, Hobart and Canberra. The partnership announcement described coverage of Australian medal prospects, ceremonies, highlights, key events and replays. ABC’s then managing director, David Anderson, said the arrangement would give audiences access to an event associated with “uniting and inspiring people.” ABC’s 8 July 2024 partnership announcement set out the agreement.

Where Australians could listen to the 2024 coverage
ABC’s listener guide, published 16 July and updated 29 July 2024, said ad-free live coverage was available on FM, AM and DAB+ in Adelaide, Canberra, Darwin, Hobart and regional stations. It gave a general broadcast window of 6pm to 6am AEST, while noting that local start times could vary. Those instructions applied to the Paris 2024 broadcast, not to current live Olympics coverage. ABC’s listening guide has the historical tuning details.
Rights restrictions meant the live broadcast was not available in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth, nor on ABC listen, smart speakers, digital TV or the ABC website during the stated broadcast window. The guide named DAB+ as an access option in the listed markets; it did not recommend or test a particular radio device.
