A Walk Through the Winter Woods is a children’s picture book written by Colleen Monroe and illustrated by Michael Monroe. The Library of Michigan catalogs it as a 2017 publication from Storytime Press, and a bookseller record identifies the edition as ISBN 9780975494257 (ISBN-10 0975494252).
Those records establish the book’s identity, but they do not provide a plot summary, subject description, page count, age range, or quotation from the book. Anyone asking what the story is about should therefore treat the bibliographic facts as confirmed and avoid borrowing a synopsis from another winter-tree title.
Confirmed facts about the book
The strongest available evidence is bibliographic rather than descriptive. The Library of Michigan catalog identifies A Walk Through the Winter Woods as a children’s picture book by Colleen Monroe, with illustrations by Michael Monroe. It lists Storytime Press as the publisher and 2017 as the publication year.
A separate bookseller listing supplies the ISBN for the edition: 9780975494257, also written as ISBN-10 0975494252. Matching that number is the safest way to distinguish this book from similarly titled winter nature books when searching library catalogs or used-book listings.

The catalog and sales record do not establish a named protagonist, setting, narrative arc, nonfiction subject, page count, reading level, or stated lesson. Those details should not be inferred from the title alone.
What “about” can honestly mean here
For this particular title, the available records answer “which book is this?” more reliably than “what happens in it?” No authoritative synopsis for the Monroe book appears in the catalog information, and the bookseller listing does not supply one. There is also no attributable quotation from Colleen Monroe, Michael Monroe, Storytime Press, or the book itself in those records.
That absence matters because a winter-woods title could describe a fictional walk, a nature lesson, a seasonal poem, an animal encounter, or something else entirely. The words in the title do not prove which of those forms the book takes. A responsible description can call it a 2017 children’s picture book and identify its creators and publisher; it cannot present an invented plot or claim that the book teaches tree identification.

Parents, librarians, teachers, and collectors who need content guidance should obtain a copy, a publisher synopsis, a library record with notes, or another authoritative description tied specifically to ISBN 9780975494257. A retailer’s search snippet or a review of a different book is not a substitute for that evidence.

Searches for the title can return another winter picture book: Winter Trees, written by Carole Gerber and illustrated by Leslie Evans, published in 2008. A 2025 review describes that separate book as following a child and a dog while they look at winter trees and identify them by shapes, bark, and buds.
That description belongs to Gerber and Evans’s book. It is not evidence about Colleen and Michael Monroe’s A Walk Through the Winter Woods. The two titles overlap in seasonal vocabulary, so a copied description can easily attach the wrong characters, activities, or educational purpose to the Monroe record.

Winter woods background that can enrich a related discussion
Nature information about winter trees can be useful alongside a reading of any woodland picture book, but it should be labeled as background rather than presented as the Monroe book’s content. A January 6, 2025 article by Catherine Wessel in Northern Woodlands explains why bark can be especially interesting in winter, when deciduous trees have lost their leaves and trunks and branches are easier to see.
Why bark stands out after leaf fall
Leaves often hide a tree’s trunk and smaller branches during the growing season. In winter, the exposed bark becomes a more obvious feature for observation. Color, texture, ridges, plates, furrows, and peeling surfaces can all provide clues, although a single visual clue is not a universal identification rule. The Northern Woodlands discussion presents examples in its regional context rather than promising that every tree can be named from bark alone.

Examples described in the Northern Woodlands article
- Paper birch: Its reflective white bark is one of the most conspicuous winter woodland features discussed.
- American beech: The article uses its smooth gray bark as another contrasting texture.
- Eastern hemlock: Its plate-like bark is discussed in connection with buffering temperature changes. A phrase attributed to Michael Wojtech, author of Bark, compares those plates to “radiator fins.”
- Eastern white pine: Its furrowed bark provides a more deeply textured example.
Winter bark and living trees
The article also explains that bark is not merely a protective outer shell. It describes winter bark photosynthesis in paper birch and aspen, and the temperature-buffering role of thick bark in eastern hemlock. These are nonfiction observations about trees; the available record does not say that Monroe’s picture book discusses photosynthesis, bark temperature, or any of these species.
If you use this material in a classroom or family nature walk, identify it as supplementary science. Ask children what they can see, feel, or compare, while avoiding a claim that the activity recreates scenes from the book.

- Start with the complete title. Search A Walk Through the Winter Woods, not a shortened phrase such as “winter woods.”
- Check both creators. The correct record names Colleen Monroe as author and Michael Monroe as illustrator.
- Confirm the year and publisher. The identified edition is a 2017 Storytime Press publication.
- Match the ISBN. Look for 9780975494257 or its ISBN-10 form, 0975494252. An identical title with a different number may be a separate edition or a different work.
- Read the source’s own description. If a listing mentions a child and dog identifying trees, compare its creators and year; those details are associated with Winter Trees in the available review, not established for the Monroe title.
- Request content evidence when it matters. For lesson planning, accessibility decisions, or age-specific recommendations, ask a library or bookseller for a verified synopsis or inspect the book itself.
Questions the current record cannot settle
Several practical questions remain open because the catalog entry is metadata-only:
- Whether the book is fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or a blend of forms.
- Who, if anyone, serves as the central character.
- Which forest, season, animals, or tree species appear in the illustrations.
- Whether the text teaches a specific science concept or simply presents a story.
- The intended age band, reading level, page count, trim size, and read-aloud length.
- Whether the 2017 edition is currently in print or readily available from a particular bookseller.
These are not minor omissions for someone choosing a book for a child or curriculum. They determine whether the title fits a particular lesson, developmental stage, or collection. Until a reliable description is attached to the exact ISBN, the prudent choice is to describe the book by its confirmed identity and leave those content questions open.
Buying and cataloging notes
The phrase used for the physical product is “A Walk Through the Winter Woods Colleen Monroe.” Match it to ISBN 9780975494257 and the 2017 Storytime Press edition before assuming that a marketplace listing is the same item. Marketplace pages can combine records, omit illustrators, or display a different edition under a similar title.
Current availability, pricing, and any affiliate eligibility are not established by the bibliographic records. A listing that cannot show the ISBN, publisher, year, and creator names together should be treated as unverified until those details are checked.
A careful way to describe the book today
The defensible description is concise: A Walk Through the Winter Woods is a 2017 Storytime Press children’s picture book written by Colleen Monroe and illustrated by Michael Monroe, identified by ISBN 9780975494257. Its catalog record confirms the edition but does not supply a synopsis. Readers seeking the story’s actual subject should consult a copy or an authoritative description tied to that edition, rather than importing details from another winter-tree book.
