A Nice Indian Boy is a 96-minute English-language romantic comedy about Naveen, a soft-spoken Indian doctor, and Jay, his white artist fiancé. When Naveen brings Jay home, a relationship that has existed partly apart from his family becomes the center of a conversation about love, marriage, belonging and the Indian wedding the couple hopes to have.
Directed by Roshan Sethi, adapted from Madhuri Shekar’s play and written for the screen by Eric Randall, the film uses recognizable rom-com machinery to tell a specifically queer South Asian family story. Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff lead a cast that includes Sunita Mani, Zarna Garg and Harish Patel.

What A Nice Indian Boy is about
The film begins with a deceptively familiar romantic-comedy situation: someone brings a partner home to meet the family. Here, that person is Naveen, a doctor whose relationship with Jay has developed at a distance from the family life he grew up with. Jay is an artist, white and openly part of Naveen’s future. Introducing him to the family forces Naveen to put two carefully separated parts of his life in the same room.
The resulting conflict is not simply whether the relatives like Jay. The family must confront what Naveen’s sexuality means to their existing ideas about relationships and marriage, while Naveen and Jay try to plan the Indian wedding they want. The official synopsis describes comic misunderstandings followed by emotional revelations, with every character pushed toward uncomfortable questions about love and commitment.

The story is centered on these particular characters. Its family arguments and moments of acceptance should not be treated as a universal portrait of Indian or South Asian families. The film’s value lies in showing one family negotiating its own history, expectations and capacity to change.

Soni’s performance makes Naveen’s reserve important to the plot. He is not introduced as someone eager to stage a grand confrontation; he has learned to keep family and sexuality at a manageable distance. Groff’s Jay brings a different energy as the partner who is already present in Naveen’s life and must now find a place inside its family structure. Their contrast gives the film its romantic tension as well as its comic timing.
The supporting cast carries the family’s competing reactions. Their scenes move between awkwardness, affection, defensiveness and practical wedding talk, allowing the film to shift from domestic comedy to emotional disclosure without abandoning its light tone.
How the story uses romantic-comedy conventions
A homecoming with higher stakes
The “meet the family” setup normally tests whether a couple can survive embarrassing relatives. In this film, the visit also tests whether Naveen can be fully known by the people whose approval still matters to him. Jay is not merely navigating unfamiliar customs; his presence exposes the gap between Naveen’s private relationship and public family identity.

Misunderstandings that reveal character
Comic misunderstandings create the film’s momentum, but they are tied to specific fears. A joke, a wedding decision or a seemingly small family comment can reveal who is protecting tradition, who is avoiding conflict and who is ready to imagine a different future. The humor keeps the film accessible while the revelations give the misunderstandings consequences.
The wedding as a shared project
Planning an Indian wedding turns an abstract argument about acceptance into a series of concrete choices. The couple’s hopes must be negotiated with family expectations, and those negotiations become a way for characters to express love even when they cannot yet express agreement. The wedding is therefore both a romantic goal and the practical arena in which belonging is tested.
Queer South Asian representation and family belonging
The film’s central intersection is brownness and queerness. Soni has described the project as an attempt to make a Bollywood film in Hollywood and has spoken about how its family dynamics grow from that intersection. His comments are an account of the film’s intention, not a claim that every South Asian queer person experiences family in the same way.
Naveen’s emotional problem is less a question of whether he loves Jay than whether he can stop compartmentalizing that love. The family has its own habits and assumptions; Naveen has his own avoidance strategies. Bringing Jay home makes both visible. Acceptance, when it comes, is presented as a process of listening, embarrassment, revision and continued relationship rather than a single speech that erases earlier pain.

That approach also keeps the romance from becoming an issue-only narrative. Jay and Naveen have to function as a couple while dealing with family pressure. Their disagreements, tenderness and wedding plans matter independently of the relatives’ reactions, so the film can remain a love story even when the surrounding conversations become difficult.
The Bollywood language of the film
Bollywood is not a decorative reference in A Nice Indian Boy; it is part of how the characters understand romance. The film’s first-date sequence includes a screening of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), commonly known as DDLJ. That choice gives Naveen and Jay a shared cinematic memory while also placing their relationship inside a tradition of grand romantic storytelling.
Soni calls the film “a love letter to Bollywood—and its Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) homage is only the beginning.” He has also said, “Honestly, Roshan and I just wanted to make a Bollywood film in Hollywood.” Those statements explain why the DDLJ reference and the hoped-for Indian wedding work together: both are ways of claiming a romantic vocabulary that has often centered heterosexual couples.
The homage should not be read as a promise that the film reproduces a full Hindi-film musical structure. The available descriptions establish the DDLJ screening and the broader Bollywood influence, but they do not establish a scene-by-scene remake or a particular song list. The useful comparison is thematic: familiar cinematic romance is being reoriented around Naveen and Jay.

From play to feature film
A Nice Indian Boy began as Madhuri Shekar’s play and was adapted into a screenplay by Eric Randall. That origin helps explain the film’s concentration on family conversation and the pressure-cooker quality of a home visit. A play can place characters in sustained proximity, allowing shifts in power to emerge through dialogue; the feature retains that interpersonal focus while using film to frame private reactions and romantic memories.
The adaptation also gives the wedding a natural dramatic function. Stage dialogue can establish the family’s assumptions, but a film can juxtapose those conversations with the couple’s shared history and the visual symbols of the ceremony they want. The result is not a choice between “family drama” and “rom-com.” The family debate supplies the stakes, while the romantic form supplies the film’s optimism and movement.

Where to watch A Nice Indian Boy
The production company’s film page links to Hulu, Prime Video and Apple TV+. Those links do not establish that the movie is currently available on any of those services in a particular country. Streaming catalogs change by territory and date, so search the title directly in the service you use and confirm that the listing is for the 96-minute feature directed by Roshan Sethi.
If you are checking availability outside the United States, do not assume that the announced April 4, 2025 US theatrical release or a US service link applies to your region. A local theater archive, digital storefront or broadcaster may carry a different release window.

Why the film’s premise matters
Many romantic comedies treat family approval as a final obstacle that disappears once relatives witness the couple’s sincerity. A Nice Indian Boy makes the negotiations themselves the story. Naveen has to decide what honesty requires, Jay has to enter a family system that was not built around him, and the relatives have to determine whether tradition is something they preserve unchanged or reinterpret for the people they love.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That structure allows the movie to be both specific and recognizable. Viewers may recognize the rituals of a home visit, the chaos of wedding planning or the comic danger of an ill-timed question, while the film’s queer perspective changes what those moments mean. The desired Indian wedding is not a backdrop added to a conventional romance; it is the couple’s claim to a place within the visual and emotional language of celebration.
Director Roshan Sethi connected the project to his own recent experience of coming out. In the December 13, 2024 distribution statement, he said, “I was closeted only six years ago, so it’s surreal on a personal level to have made this particular romantic comedy about love and acceptance and family belonging.” The quotation explains the personal resonance he sees in the film, while the finished story remains the experience of Naveen, Jay and their relatives.
Bottom line for viewers
A Nice Indian Boy is a compact, character-led romantic comedy that puts a queer Indian couple at the center of a family-and-wedding story. Its strongest distinguishing features are the tension between Naveen’s private and family identities, the Indian wedding as an active dramatic choice, and the way DDLJ and Bollywood romance are reclaimed for a relationship that mainstream romantic formulas have often left outside the frame.
