R. Kelly’s career rose from Chicago-area talent-show success to chart-topping R&B stardom, then became defined by years of public scrutiny, federal prosecutions and prison sentences. The music milestones and the criminal cases are connected parts of his public story, but their outcomes differ: an earlier trial ended in acquittal, while later juries convicted him in New York and Chicago, with acquittals on some Chicago counts.
How did R. Kelly become famous?
From a group talent-show win to a recording deal
Robert Sylvester Kelly first gained national attention as part of the R&B group MGM. In 1990, the group won the $100,000 grand prize on the television talent show Big Break, according to an Associated Press timeline carried by Global News in 2022. Kelly then recorded with Public Announcement: the group’s album, Born Into the ’90s, was released in 1992.
12 Play made him a solo star
Kelly’s 1993 album 12 Play was the commercial breakthrough. The AP timeline reported that it sold more than five million copies, a historical sales figure rather than a current audit. Songs including “Sex Me” and “Bump N’ Grind” helped establish his profile; the timeline described “Bump N’ Grind” as a major R&B chart success.
In 1996, Kelly released “I Believe I Can Fly,” which broadened his reach beyond R&B. The Recording Academy awards, as reported in the 2022 AP timeline, gave the song three Grammys in 1998. His success as a songwriter and performer made him one of the best-known R&B artists of the period.

When did allegations begin to overshadow the music?
Kelly faced allegations and public scrutiny for years, but allegations must be distinguished from legal findings: they did not all lead to the same outcome. In 2008, he was acquitted in a Chicago child-pornography trial, according to the AP chronology. That acquittal did not determine the outcome of later federal cases, which involved separate proceedings and produced convictions years afterward.
Public resistance became more visible in 2017 with the #MuteRKelly campaign, which called for a boycott. In 2018, Spotify removed Kelly’s music from its playlists, and Apple and Pandora stopped promoting it, according to the AP timeline. Those platform decisions marked a change in public and industry response; they were not court judgments. The sources cited here do not establish the present-day availability of his music across services.

What did the federal juries decide?

The New York trial included 45 government witnesses, according to the DOJ’s 2022 sentencing announcement; more than 10 were victims. The government also presented testimony from employees, text messages, recordings, photographs, phone and travel records, DNA evidence and expert testimony. In announcing the sentence, then-U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said Kelly had used his fame and people around him to prey on young and vulnerable people. That was the prosecutor’s characterization, not a quotation from the jury or a separate judicial finding.
What sentences did Kelly receive?
New York: 30 years
In June 2022, a federal judge sentenced Kelly to 30 years in prison for the New York case. The sentence followed the 2021 jury verdict on all nine counts, as the DOJ’s Eastern District of New York announcement set out.

Chicago: 20 years, mostly concurrent
In February 2023, Kelly received a 20-year sentence in the Chicago case. Most of that term was ordered to run concurrently with the New York sentence, so adding 20 and 30 to claim a 50-year term served consecutively would be misleading. The cited sources do not establish a current projected release date.
What happened on appeal?
On February 12, 2025, the Associated Press reported that the Second Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Kelly’s New York convictions and 30-year sentence. In its opinion, the court said Kelly had been “Enabled by a constellation of managers, assistants, and other staff for over twenty-five years” and had exploited his fame to lure girls and young women. AP also reported that Kelly’s lawyer said she believed the Supreme Court would agree to hear an appeal; that statement was not a Supreme Court ruling. The cited appellate report establishes the February 2025 decision, not a later Supreme Court outcome.

Why is the rise-and-fall story more than a music timeline?
Kelly’s career illustrates the gap between public acclaim and accountability. His early group success, major sales for 12 Play and Grammy recognition for “I Believe I Can Fly” explain the scale of his fame. The boycott campaign, platform decisions and later federal cases show how public response and legal proceedings came to dominate that legacy. Keeping the chronology precise matters: the 2008 acquittal stands alongside, but does not erase, the later New York and Chicago convictions; the Chicago jury also acquitted him on several counts.
