The line, reported by BetaNews as “I A9.com’d him,” became an unusual example of a brand appearing in a scripted TV conversation without the company’s involvement, according to A9’s account at the time.
What the reported line said
BetaNews reported the A9.com reference on January 27, 2005, quoting the phrase “I A9.com’d him.” The report described A9.com as a search engine and noted its Yellow Pages service, which could show a queried business alongside nearby storefronts. Those details describe the service as it was presented in 2005; they do not establish whether A9.com or those features are available today.
Was A9.com paid product placement?
In the BetaNews interview, A9.com CEO Udi Manber said: “This placement was not paid for by A9.com or Amazon.com. We didn’t even know it was going to air.” That is the company’s contemporary account, not an independently verified production history: the available sources do not include production records or an official transcript establishing how the reference entered the script.
Waxy.org discussed the mention contemporaneously and later reported that two sources confirmed A9 had been unaware of it before broadcast. That follow-up supports Manber’s account, but it remains secondary reporting rather than confirmation from the show’s production team.

Which character and episode?
A Fun Trivia page attributes the remark to Lindsay telling Ryan she had A9.com’d Caleb, and identifies the episode as “The Accomplice.” IMDb lists “The Accomplice” as an episode of The O.C., but its episode summary does not mention A9.com. Without an official transcript or primary episode recording among the available sources, the character and dialogue details should be treated as fan-source attribution, not independently confirmed fact.
