Jon Bernthal’s career reaches well beyond his best-known roles as Shane Walsh in The Walking Dead and Frank Castle in Marvel’s The Punisher. Built on formal acting training and theater work, it spans television dramas, crime and action films, Broadway, producing, writing, and podcasting.
How Bernthal trained for the stage and screen
Bernthal’s path into acting included both international study and graduate-level training. AMC’s biography says he studied at the Moscow Arts Theatre during college, training in acting, acrobatics, ballet, and rhythm. A director connected to Harvard’s Institute for Advanced Theatre Training later invited him to study at the American Repertory Theatre; Bernthal graduated with a Master of Fine Arts. AMC’s biography also records a substantial theater background.

A period biography in a Festival de Cannes-hosted press kit likewise discusses his training and stage credits. It offers context for his early career rather than a current or complete account.
Early screen roles and a first major film part
Before his breakthrough, Bernthal appeared in a range of television projects. AMC lists early credits including Boston Legal, CSI: Miami, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, How I Met Your Mother, and Without a Trace. AMC identifies Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center as Bernthal’s first major film role. These credits show how his screen career developed across episodic television and film before a single television character made him widely recognizable.

Shane Walsh made him a breakout television actor
Bernthal’s major television breakthrough came as Shane Walsh in AMC’s The Walking Dead. The series adaptation draws on the graphic novels by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard; the books are source material for the show, not a work authored by Bernthal. CAA describes Shane as Bernthal’s breakout role.
Netflix’s March 18, 2026, overview describes The Walking Dead as an 11-season series that ran from 2010 to 2022. That run gave the character a place in a long-running ensemble drama, while also establishing Bernthal for audiences who would later encounter him in another major franchise. Netflix’s selected guide to Bernthal’s movies and series provides that series context.

From Daredevil to the Punisher
Bernthal’s next defining television role was Frank Castle, the vigilante known as the Punisher. According to CAA, he first played Castle in the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil, then led the spinoff The Punisher. His later franchise appearances include Daredevil: Born Again.
Netflix’s March 18, 2026 article described Bernthal’s return as Castle in Spider-Man: Brand New Day as upcoming. That description is time-sensitive; it should not be treated as a statement of the film’s current release status. The sequence from Daredevil through the spinoff and later appearances, however, illustrates how a supporting introduction became one of the recurring threads in Bernthal’s screen career. CAA’s biography lists selected career credits, while Netflix’s guide covers the more recent titles.

Films that show his range across genres
Bernthal’s film work is not confined to action or comic-book stories. Selected credits in the Netflix and CAA biographies trace parts in war, crime, drama, and sports films. The examples below are representative, not a complete filmography.
| Film | What it adds to the career picture |
|---|---|
| Fury | A war-film credit in an ensemble cast; also discussed in a contemporaneous Festival de Cannes-hosted press kit. |
| The Wolf of Wall Street | A crime-drama credit among CAA’s selected titles. |
| Sicario | A crime and thriller example in Netflix’s selected titles. |
| Baby Driver | A crime-action title in Netflix’s selection. |
| Ford v. Ferrari | A sports drama among Netflix’s selected titles. |
| Wind River, Widows, The Peanut Butter Falcon, and King Richard | Further selected credits from CAA’s biography, spanning different dramatic settings. |
The film choices show why a career overview should not reduce Bernthal to either Shane Walsh or the Punisher. They place him in varied projects, often as part of a larger ensemble, alongside the high-profile television roles that anchor his public profile. For selected titles and credits, see Netflix Tudum and CAA.

Theater, producing, writing, and podcast work
Theater is part of Bernthal’s career both before and alongside his screen roles. CAA includes Broadway’s Dog Day Afternoon among his credits, while AMC’s biography describes a broader stage background. AMC also says Bernthal co-launched the production company Story Factory with his father.
CAA’s biography identifies additional work as a producer, writer, and podcast host, as well as roles in television dramas including We Own This City and The Bear. These activities broaden the picture from performer to creative collaborator, though the available biographies do not constitute a complete independent credits database. CAA’s selected biography and AMC’s profile describe these strands of his work.

Why his career is bigger than two signature roles
Shane Walsh and Frank Castle remain the clearest milestones in Bernthal’s television career: one established him as a breakout performer in a long-running ensemble, and the other developed into a recurring franchise portrayal. But his training, theater work, early television parts, varied film appearances, and behind-the-scenes projects reveal a broader trajectory. The credits cited here are selected examples from network, agency, and Netflix biographies, not a definitive filmography.
