Live streaming—sending audio or video over the internet as it happens—did not begin on a single agreed date. Early experiments, a 1993 concert, a 1995 baseball broadcast, and later platform launches each mark a different milestone. The story runs from specialist, bandwidth-limited experiments to mobile broadcasts built around chat, gaming, and social audiences.

What counts as the first livestream?

There is no uncontested first. The answer depends on whether “first” means an early internet video experiment, a successful concert stream, a sports broadcast, or a service that let ordinary users broadcast. IBM traces streaming’s origins to early internet experiments and describes a 1993 Severe Tire Damage concert as one of the earliest successful internet live streams—not definitively the first ever. In 1995, RealNetworks used RealPlayer to broadcast a live baseball game, an early sports-streaming milestone. IBM’s history of streaming media provides context for both milestones.

How live streaming developed

From experiments to major online events

Early 1990s experiments faced substantial limits in bandwidth and video quality. The next milestones showed that live internet video could support specific events, even before it became a routine feature for individual users.

  • 1993: Severe Tire Damage performed in a concert described by IBM as one of the earliest successful internet live streams.
  • 1995: RealNetworks broadcast a live baseball game using RealPlayer.
  • 2008: YouTube hosted a high-profile global live event featuring creators and performers including will.i.am, Esmée Denters, and Bo Burnham. An event hosted by a platform was not yet the same as open livestreaming access for its users.

IBM’s history and YouTube’s account of its live product help distinguish event broadcasts from user-facing livestreaming.

Lifecasting, gaming, and user broadcasts

In 2007, Justin.tv launched as a lifecasting service: a continuous online account of a person’s life. A University of Edinburgh thesis describes it as a new form of reality television. In 2011, YouTube introduced livestreaming as a user feature, while Twitch launched as a gaming-focused offshoot of Justin.tv. These changes expanded who could broadcast and helped live video develop communities organized around particular interests. University of Edinburgh research on live streaming discusses this platform history.

Live video moves onto social and mobile platforms

Twitter acquired Periscope in 2015; Facebook Live launched in 2016; Instagram Live arrived in 2017. Together, these milestones mark the shift toward live broadcasting through mobile-first social platforms. Live video became easier to start where audiences already followed people and organizations, rather than requiring a specialist streaming destination.

Major audiences and the pandemic period

Wowza’s infographic reports that Felix Baumgartner’s October 2012 skydive drew 8 million viewers on YouTube Live. The infographic does not identify an underlying measurement organization, so this is best read as a reported figure rather than an independently verified count. Wowza also reported a 300% increase in live-streaming events during May–August 2020. That vendor figure describes events in that period; it is not a measure of audience growth or a current growth rate. Wowza’s streaming resources include the timeline behind these reported milestones.

What changed in the technology?

From bandwidth constraints to segmented delivery

Early internet video was constrained by slow connections, limited device compatibility, and low quality. Flash and RTMP were important in an earlier phase. Modern delivery commonly encodes video into successive segments and distributes them through content delivery networks (CDNs). A viewer’s device receives and plays pieces as they arrive rather than waiting for an entire video file to download.

Adaptive quality, reach, and delay

Protocols such as HLS and DASH support delivery across a broad range of devices. With adaptive-bitrate playback, a player can lower or raise video quality as a viewer’s connection changes, helping maintain playback. CDNs place delivery servers closer to viewers, helping streams reach large audiences across networks. Smooth playback, broad reach, and low delay are related but distinct engineering goals: reducing latency requires specific choices and trade-offs, and is not guaranteed simply by using segmented delivery. A 2023 streaming technology survey discusses these delivery approaches.

Flash support ended in December 2020, while Apple announced Low-Latency HLS in 2019, as noted in Wowza’s timeline. These milestones reflect a broader shift away from older playback approaches and toward delivery methods designed for contemporary devices and lower delay.

How did live streaming change the audience experience?

Live platforms changed more than the route video took across the internet. Chat, notifications, and reactions made a broadcast a shared, real-time activity. Viewers could respond to a broadcaster and to one another, while platform design influenced whether a broadcast disappeared, remained available briefly, or was archived. In gaming especially, the live experience grew around communities as well as the video itself. The University of Edinburgh thesis examines these audience practices; its discussion of interaction draws on scholarship about game livestreaming.

Why is there no single start date?

“When did live streaming start?” has several defensible answers because the question can refer to different things: early experiments, a successful concert, a sports broadcast, a platform-hosted event, or general user access. The 1993 concert and 1995 baseball game are early broadcast milestones; Justin.tv’s 2007 launch marks a lifecasting service; YouTube’s 2008 event preceded its 2011 user livestreaming feature. Treating any one of these as the sole invention collapses distinct stages of the medium’s history.

Keeping a YouTube stream live today

Live streaming’s history also leads to a present-day distinction: a person can broadcast live from a camera or computer, or keep uploaded video running as a continuous YouTube stream. StreamNeo is a cloud service for the second case. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add a YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so a computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream and a first day free without a card. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
