It named ten titles because one entry paired two Highlander films. Netflix availability changes by country and over time, so check your local catalog before looking for any of them.
Why these titles were recommended
The original list was tied to the Scottish independence referendum held on September 18, 2014. The Electoral Commission recorded 3,623,344 votes, representing 84.6% of the electorate; 2,001,926 people, or 55.25% of all voters, voted No. The Electoral Management Board for Scotland rounded the result to 55.3% No and 44.7% Yes. The result was declared at approximately 9 a.m. on September 19, according to the Electoral Commission.
The films and series below are the 2014 article’s recommendations, not a new critical ranking or confirmation of what Netflix carries today. They range from bleak Glasgow stories to lighter comedies and Highland settings, so choose by mood and subject rather than treating the sequence as a quality ranking.
The nine recommendations, grouped by what you might want to watch
For darker stories about Glasgow and hard choices
- Trainspotting (1996): Danny Boyle’s gritty urban drama follows Ewan McGregor’s character as he struggles to stay clean while friends continue using heroin. It is the list’s starkest pick.
- Neds (2010): Set in 1970s Glasgow, this dark story follows a boy who becomes involved in a gang. The original article expands the title as “Non-Educated Delinquents.”
For lighter romance and comedy
- Gregory’s Girl (1981): A school-age romantic comedy about Scottish teenager Gregory trying to woo a new girl who joins the school’s football team.
- The Decoy Bride (2011): A romantic comedy featuring David Tennant as the leading man.
For family, history, and the Highlands
- Monarch of the Glen (2000–2004): The original article describes this as a six-season series about a young London restaurateur who returns to his family’s Scottish Highlands estate to help preserve its fortune. It is the list’s family-estate comedy-drama.
- My Life So Far (1999): A family story set shortly after World War I, based on Denis Forman’s memoirs and centered on his childhood self. Colin Firth is in the cast.
- Mrs. Brown (1997): This film concerns Queen Victoria’s relationship with her Scottish servant John Brown, with Judi Dench and Billy Connolly.
For whisky and immortal swordsmen
- The Angels’ Share (2012): Ken Loach’s humorous, hopeful story follows a father who avoids jail and friends trying to turn their lives around. Its distillery setting makes it the list’s most direct whisky-related choice. The original article notes Loach won the 2012 Cannes Jury Prize.
- The two-film Highlander entry: Highlander 3: The Final Dimension (1994) and Highlander: Endgame (2000) were presented together as one numbered recommendation. The franchise centers on Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish swordsman.
How to use this list today
Start with the setting or tone you want: Glasgow and darker drama in Trainspotting or Neds; a Highland estate in Monarch of the Glen; or lighter romance in Gregory’s Girl and The Decoy Bride. The list includes films and one series, and its dates span 1981 to 2012. Those are useful ways to narrow the choices, but they do not establish current streaming rights.

The 2014 TechTimes article is the source for the recommendations and their descriptions. Its publication date does not establish that any title remains on Netflix. Search your country’s Netflix catalog or the service’s current title pages before planning a watch; a title’s availability in one country would not prove availability elsewhere.
